The effectiveness of Behavioral Couples Therapy (BCT) in the treatment of substance-abusing males has been demonstrated (Fals-Stewart, Birchler, 8 O'Farrell, 1996). However, research on the effectiveness of BCT in substance-abusing females has remained unexamined. It was hypothesized that BCT would improve posttreatment results of substance abuse treatment, both in terms of drug use and relationship satisfaction.

Married or cohabitating female substance-abusing patients (N=60) who were entering an outpatient treatment program were randomly assigned to one of two equally intensive treatment conditions. Increasing numbers of children being referred for mental health services are exhibiting problematic behaviors that can be subsumed under the category of Disruptive Behavior Disorders. This study with its foundations in a post-positivist approach was designed to explore treatment effectiveness of cognitive behavioral intervention applied to adolescents at Oak Grove Institute, a residential treatment facility. This study hypothesized that Wexler's PRISM Model, with its integration of affect, would be instrumental in modifying disruptive behavior as measured at Oak Grove Institute. Emerging research suggests that alcohol, tobacco and drug-related problems may be higher in lesbian and gay communities than in the population as a whole. At the same time, alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries have increased marketing strategies that are targeted specifically to lesbian and gay communities. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) and HTV/AIDS organizations, often marginalized and under-funded, have frequently faced significant challenges in funding programs and special events. With the increase in the elderly, American's caregiver roles and responsibilities are also on the rise. Developing with this increase is the growing problem of caregiver burden. The Loma Linda V. A. Hospital has developed a service known as the Home-Based Primary Care program designed to combat caregiver burden. Studies were conducted among caregiver participants in this program in an effort to evaluate overall levels of burden and the program's efficiency at meeting caregiver needs. Determining How Stressors Effect The Onset Of Substance Abuse In Runaways, Christopher Parrish Rosselli

In America, it is estimated that between 500,000 and two million children run away each year. A majority of these runaways become involved with illegal substance abuse. This study questions whether children experience substance abuse prior to their running away or if their substance abuse is an attempt to cope with the new stressors created by street life. Data collection will include having 50 volunteers complete a questionnaire, with consideration of race and gender. The findings suggested that no relationship exist between runaways engaging in drug use and the amount of stress experienced at home or during the runaway.

For the mental health professional, the client with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) can be exciting, exhausting and frustrating. Formal education offers little help in treatment and diagnosis of this disorder. This paper will explore the most utilized treatment goals available to the professional and the client. Although most "experts" in the field of Dissociative Disorders subscribe to the treatment goal of integration, this study challenges that idea. As the results of the study indicate, integration was not the most utilized goal of treatment among the participants of this study.

The study was conducted to see if there is as much or more of a difference in outcome of treatment for addiction in faith-based treatment than secular-based treatment. The research was conducted using a sample of thirty-seven respondents from various sites in Southern California who volunteered to fill out the questionnaire. The author of this paper has addressed the significance of the development of treatment strategies to implement with African American adolescent crack addicts. An integral basis for tailoring culturally specific treatment approaches for African American adolescents relates to the unique circumstances, which may promote more extensive crack abuse by this group. This research studied the effects of childhood sexual abuse on substance use in adolescent females. Eighty females from The Cherry Hill Shelter located in Daniels, West Virginia were involved in the research. This research involved a between-subjects random design. The data was analyzed using the chi-square technique. Race, history of sexual abuse, history of substance use, and residence were involved in the analysis. The results of the chi-square technique indicated that early childhood sexual abuse and substance use among adolescent females are independent of each other. The relational approach, in comparison to the more traditional approach to counseling, can give the counselor an alternative framework in which to explore and understand human development and apply counseling methods. Public perception about the differences between these professionals has been the focus of many studies and the results generally suggest that the public cannot clearly distinguish among these mental heath professionals. The present study is also concerned with perceptions about the various mental health professionals, in particular, perceptions of clinical psychologists relative to other professionals in this field. Increasing Readiness To Change Among Smokers In A Primary Care Setting, Sheila F. Collicott

This study compared the effectiveness of two brief interventions, direct advice and motivational interviewing, for increasing motivation to quit among male smokers in the pre-contemplation and contemplation stages of change who were primary care patients at an Eastern urban VA medical center. Contrary to expectations, participants receiving motivational interviews did not increase more in readiness to change, motivation, and actions to quit, than those receiving direct advice or a control conversation, nor did they smoke fewer cigarettes per day. As expected, contemplators reported more cutting down and quit attempts than pre-contemplators. Factors that may have limited the effectiveness of interventions …

The salutary effect of religion is receiving greater acceptance among researchers, and its positive association with both physical and mental health has been increasingly examined in the scientific literature. Since religion has played a central role in the lives of Blacks, and since previous research has identified positive correlations between some religious attributes and individual well-being, it would seem that religious Black families would enjoy a greater degree of health.

The National Mental Health Strategy was launched in 1992 and endorsed Consumer-provider collaboration as an integral part or mental health service delivery in Australia. Feedback on services is generally elicited through evaluation of existing services. Rather than being than evaluative study or existing services this qualitative project explored the experience of being a mental health consumer within the framework of the consumer’s expectations and perceptions of service delivery in Western Australia.
