Hematologic Manifestations Of Parvovirus B 19 Infection, Ghada Algwaiz, Abrar Alharbi, Khuloud Alsehaim, Ali Alahmari, Riad El Fakih, Mahmoud Aljurf

Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Therapy

Parvovirus B19 virus infection is widespread among humans because of its highly infectious and obstinate nature, with up to 80% of the population testing positive for IgG antibodies against the virus. Pronormoblasts observed in biopsy are the hallmarks of PVB19 infection. In addition, PVB19 affects the skin, heart, brain, joints, and liver and can be diagnosed through antibody detection or DNA detection via PCR. Due to its capsid proteins’ high affinity for bone marrow receptors, its main presentation is the suppression of bone marrow functions. It has been shown to affect patients with hemolytic anemia and patients with hematological malignancies, …

Stroboscopic Augmented Reality As An Approach To Mitigate Gravitational Transition Effects During Interplanetary Spaceflight, Ethan Waisberg, Joshua Ong, Nasif Zaman, Sharif Amit Kamran, Andrew G. Lee, Alireza Tavakkoli

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

During interplanetary spaceflight, periods of extreme gravitational transitions will occur such as transitions between hypergravity, hypogravity, and microgravity. Following gravitational transitions, rapid sensorimotor adaptation or maladaptation may occur which can affect gaze control and weaken dynamic visual acuity in astronauts. A reduction in dynamic visual acuity during spaceflight could possibly impact or impair mission critical activities (e.g., control of extraterrestrial machinery/vehicles and other important tasks). Stroboscopic visual training is an emerging visual tool that has been terrestrially observed to enhance visual performance and perception by performing tasks under conditions of intermittent vision. This technique has also been seen to increase …

Archives of Neurosurgery

Introduction: Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is characterized by the involuntary, paroxysmal, painless, and progressive spasmodic contractions of facial muscles innervated by the ipsilateral seventh cranial nerve. To date, neuroimaging studies (Computed Tomography scan [CT] and Magnetic Resonance Imaging [MRI]) are unable to establish the diagnosis. HFS medical treatment with antiepileptic drugs, and Botulinum toxin application are temporarily effective, however, both have shown side effects and lesser cost-effective results. Currently, surgical Micro Vascular Decompression (MVD) for HFS has the highest curative rates and lower operative morbidity. We analyze the demographics, clinical manifestations, outcomes, and complications that to our knowledge, is the largest …

Background: Active Functional Mapping (AFM) is the gold standard method for localizing cortical and subcortical brain functional areas and tracts. By definition, it requires direct application of controlled electrical stimuli under established protocols. Nevertheless, it entails inherent risks, such as causing intraoperative seizures. On the other hand, Passive Functional Mapping (PFM) doesn´t require electrical stimulation of the nervous system. PFM is based on the knowledge that brain metabolism generates different electromagnetic radiation patterns depending on its metabolism, that are invisible to the human eye, but infrared thermographic cameras can show those changes related to brain activity without the use of …

Archives of Neurosurgery

Nowadays, an apprentice of neurosurgery has to complete long and different pathways of education. The encounter between the schools of Napoli and Tucuman, make us identify a common strategy of neurosurgical education. In attempt of defining the philosophy behind it we attempt a comparison in between the life and training of a modern neurosurgeon and the character of a tale of Borges (i.e. Ts'ui Pên). As neurosurgeons of the 21st century we must be like the inextricable Ts'ui Pên.

Archives of Neurosurgery

Background: Epidermoid cysts (EC) are relatively rare congenital lesions. They arise from ectodermal debris during aberrant closure of the neural tube, are benign, and of slow growth. They are found predominantly in the cistern of the cerebellopontine angle, most are intradural, and very rarely, there is underlying compression of the venous sinuses, leading to benign intracranial hypertension.

Case description: We present the case of a patient diagnosed with a giant extradural, intradiploic EC with compression of the left transverse sinus and its successful management by using ultrasonic aspiration, performing a combined supra-infratentorial retromastoid approach with occipitotemporal craniotomy, without subsequent …

Effectiveness Of Stricter Vaccine Mandates In Public Schools And Childcare Centers, Anna Ferentinos

Emerging Writers

Vaccines have been a controversial and frequently discussed topic the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The amount of readily available information on the internet - accurate or not – has led to many theories and opinions on whether to vaccinate and why, or why not. This article discusses these theories, as well as the benefits and consequences of vaccine mandates, with the help of examples from other countries. The author argues that a federal vaccine mandate should be implemented in the United States of America so as to encourage parents to protect children through scheduled immunizations.
