This DNP project was conducted to identify gaps in knowledge focusing on sexually transmitted infections within Texas and Region one. The research study gathered data from first-year nursing students who have chosen to participate in a sexually transmitted infection-focused educational module. Participants were first-year nursing students and understood the research study was strictly voluntary with no forms of compensation. Currently, the curriculum in the nursing program at which the study took place does not focus on sexually transmitted infections and is directed to speak minimally on the subject. Assessing the intergenerational effects of maternal stress is important for predicting how offspring will respond to changing environments. The overall aim of my thesis was to quantify the effects of maternal state on maternally derived egg cortisol and determine whether this variation in egg cortisol impacts Chinook salmon offspring performance and fitness in a sex-specific way. I quantified within-female changes in maternal energetics and reproductive metrics that I linked to egg quality and ultimately embryo survival. I found egg cortisol increases with increasing maternal plasma cortisol, and increases further as plasma cortisol levels rise with each day that eggs are …

Natural killer (NK) cells are large, granular, and cytotoxic innate lymphocytes which do not require prior antigenic exposure to target cancerous and virally infected cells. NK cells possess activating and inhibitory receptors which may activate or inhibit NK cell activity, respectively. In mice, the inhibitory NKR-P1B receptor on NK cells recognizes the C-type lectin-related protein-b (Clr-b) ligand expressed on most autologous cells but downregulated on many tumour cell lines. In B cell lymphoma models, the disruption of NKR-P1B:Clr-b interaction results in delayed tumour development and progression, suggesting that blockage of inhibitory signals from NKR-P1B augments NK cell activity against lymphoma …

In 2018, 49% of all pregnancies in the United States were unintended, with women with a lower- income status being five times more likely to experience an unplanned pregnancy. Tennessee has a high rate of unintended pregnancies, particularly among the uninsured, low-income, and rural teen populations; some 22% of these unintended pregnancies end in abortion. Oral or transdermal contraceptives that are affordable and accessible for women of childbearing age can reduce unintentional pregnancies. Evidence from animal models have demonstrated that chronically high cortisol concentration alters brain structure and function, suggesting that studying these two mechanisms together may further improve understanding of parental behavior in human mothers. Background: The epidemiology of concussion in collegiate and high school athletes has been extensively researched. Concussive injury in collegiate recreation, a less supervised sample, is limited. This preliminary study retrospectively examined the incidence and prevalence rates of concussive injuries in intramural and club sports at one institution. Methods: Injury reports were analyzed during the 2016-2019 calendar years. Concussion prevalence, incidence, and odds ratios (reported with 95% CIs) were calculated for intramural and club sports. Background: Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IIRI) following resuscitated hemorrhagic shock (HS/RES) leads to endothelial damage, microcirculatory dysfunction and intestinal barrier breakdown, increasing intestinal permeability. This pathologic process contributes pathophysiology of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) in some trauma patients. Although vascular smooth muscle machinery remains intact, microvascular vasoconstriction occurs secondary to endothelial cell damage, resulting in further ischemia and organ injury. Used separately, resuscitation with Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) or Direct Peritoneal Resuscitation (DPR) improves the intestinal microcirculation and alleviates organ injury. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling affects ASD by influencing synaptogenesis, plasticity, and survival. Studying early in-utero neuropathological changes within ASD requires the use of animal models. These myeloid cell precursors promote immunosuppression, especially in the late (post sepsis) stage. However, the mechanisms that underlie MDSC expansion and programming are not completely understood. To investigate these mechanisms, we used a cecal-ligation and puncture (CLP) mouse model of polymicrobial sepsis that progresses from an early/acute proinflammatory phase to a late/chronic immunosuppressive phase. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a fatal lung disease characterized by extracellular matrix deposition by fibroblasts. Aging and oxidative stress increase the susceptibility to IPF. Redox couples, cysteine/cystine (Cys/CySS) and glutathione/glutathione disulfide (GSH/GSSG), and their redox potentials (E_h) quantify oxidative stress. Fibroblasts from old mice maintain more oxidized extracellular E_h(Cys/CySS) than young mice. Microarray shows down-regulation of Slc7a11 potentially mediates this age-related oxidation. In a regression setup, the main target is to find a relevant set of predictors out of a large collection of covariates. Sparsity is the assumption that only a few of these covariates in a regression setup have a meaningful correlation with an outcome variate of interest. Sparsity is incorporated by regularizing the irrelevant slopes towards zero without changing the relevant predictors and keeping the resulting inferences intact.
