Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Losartan, an antihypertensive drug, is highly preferred in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension because of its retarding effect on diabetic nephropathy. In this study, we investigated the potential therapeutic effect of different doses of losartan on hepatic damage in a streptozotocin (STZ, 50 mg/kg)-induced DM model in rats.Materials and methods: In this study, five different groups were formed: control, DM, low-dose losartan (5 mg/kg), mid-dose losartan (20 mg/kg), and high-dose losartan (80 mg/kg). Liver tissues of experimental groups were evaluated immunohistochemically for TUNEL, iNOS, eNOS, VEGF, and NF-?B pathways. In addition to immunohistochemical analysis, analyses of SOD …

Background/aim: The optimal technique for airway management in patients with cervical pathology remains unclear. Intubating laryngeal mask airway devices such as LMA CTrach and LMA Fastrach have not been compared for cervical spine (C-spine) movements in the context of cervical pathology. The present study aimed to determine upper C-spine movements by radiography during intubation with different devices as well as comparing the duration and success of intubation in cervical surgery.Materials and methods: Sixty patients scheduled for elective cervical surgery were registered in this prospective, randomized study. Patients with cervical trauma/injury, previous neck surgery, and body mass index (BMI) of >35 …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: We evaluate whether transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS)-guided prostate biopsy might lead to spillage of tumor cells into peripheral blood as a result of disruption of the epithelial barrier and ultimately result in metastasis. Materials and methods: Eighty-eight patients underwent TRUS-guided prostate needle biopsy due to prostate-specific antigen (PSA) increase or abnormal digital rectal examination at the Samsun Research and Training Hospital (Samsun, Turkey) between April 2016 and September 2018. Approximately 10 mL of whole blood was collected from patients before, 1 week after, and 1 month after biopsy. Samples were analyzed for CD117 positivity and prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) levels …

Cross-Cultural Adaptation, Reliability, And Validity Of The Turkish Version Of The Neck Outcome Score, Şeyda Candeni̇z, Seyi̇t Çitaker, Batuhan Bakirarar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study aims to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Neck OutcOme Score (NOOS).Materials and methods: Two hundred eight patients suffering from nonspecific neck pain participated in the study. Test-retest reliability and internal consistency were assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (2, 1) and Cronbach's alpha, respectively. The dimensionality was investigated with the factor analysis. The construct validity was determined by testing whether the hypothesis of correlations between NOOS subscales, Short Form-36 subscales, and the Neck Disability Index were met using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Ceiling/floor effects and measurement error were tested as well. Results: The …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/Aim: Cisplatin is a highly effective chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of solid organ cancers. Besides its chemotherapeutic effectiveness, cisplatin administration is associated with numerous side effects. Of those, the most clinically significant and common effect is nephrotoxicity. Recent studies reported that oxidative stress and inflammation are probably the most important mechanisms that contribute to the nephrotoxicity. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is an antioxidant and antiinflammatory agent. In the present study, the effects of NAC on cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity were investigated. Materials and methods: Rats were divided into four groups each including eight rats: CONT, NAC-250, CP, and CP+NAC. Rats in experimental …
