Helicobacter pylori is considered a class I carcinogen by the World Health Organization. We aimed to determine whether H. pylori has an effect on telomerase activity in patients with H. pylori related non-specific gastritis, atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia. Materials and methods: One hundred and seventy-two adult patients who underwent upper gastroduodenoscopy were enrolled in the study. Three biopsy specimens were taken from the antrum: 1 from the incisura angularis and 2 from the mid-antrum. Biopsy specimens taken from the incisura angularis were evaluated using the urease test for detection of H. pylori. The mid-antrum specimens were sent for histopathology and …

Seroma is an important complication of breast surgery. This study investigated the effects of fixation of the flaps and obliterating the dead space on seroma formation. Materials and methods: Patients undergoing modified radical mastectomy were separated into 2 random groups of 50 according to wound closure methods: either flap fixation/mechanical obliteration or standard wound closure group. The fluid that collected under the flaps assessed at the physical examination after the drains were removed was accepted as seroma. The patients' characteristics, duration of the operation, drainage amount, removal time of the drains, flap necroses, and infection were recorded. The groups were …

The objective of all studies evaluating retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening criteria has been to minimize the number of infants screened while missing no patients with ROP who required treatment. Studies supporting the recommendation that screening for ROP could be restricted to infants born at less than 30 weeks of gestation with birth weights of less than 1250 g have been reported recently, especially from Western countries. However, with the lack of local outcome data, application of the new restricted screening guidelines to infants in middle income countries may lead to misguidance. We aimed to investigate ROP screening requirements in …

Materials and methods: Plain radiographs of left hands and wrists of 324 children were evaluated. Mean chronological age (CA) was compared with mean bone age (BA) according to the TW3 atlas for each sex, and differences by age group were determined. Pearson correlation coefficients and cubic regression were used to determine the differences and model the relationships between mean BA and CA. Statistical analyses were carried out using R-project. Results: The difference between the mean …

Duct brushing cytology is an important tool in the evaluation of the extrahepatic biliary tract. New liquid-based preparations and ancillary tests have emerged with the intent of addressing this issue. Materials and methods: Fifty-four consecutive patients and 68 specimens with a suspected malignant obstruction of the common bile duct were included in a consecutive, nonrandomized order. We selected patients whose follow-up, in the form of either histology (25/54, 46%) or at least 6 months of clinical observation, was available. They underwent sampling during ERCP (33 patients/40 materials) or PTC (21 patients/28 materials) using the brush method. Results: A total of …

Acute gastric volvulus occurs when the stomach or a part of it rotates more than 180 degrees. It is a potentially life-threatening entity and most cases of gastric volvulus occur in association with eventration of left hemidiaphragm or a hiatal hernia. Gastric volvulus is a rare condition and presents with nonspecific epigastric pain and vomiting, and therefore may be missed. Chest x-ray and CT can help the diagnosis. Emergent surgical approach is mandatory. Two elderly patients admitted to ED with epigastric pain and intractable vomiting did not respond to the treatment and we were not able to pass nasogastric tube. …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Several studies have reported the importance of dermatoglyphics as markers of a prenatal disturbance in patients with schizophrenia. Due to the fact that finger- and handprints are formed by the end of the second trimester, they may provide clues to disturbances in early development. The aim of this study was to determine specific dermatoglyphical frequencies in a sample of patients with schizophrenia and normal controls. Materials and methods: Fingerprints and palm prints were obtained from 45 schizophrenic patients as well as 45 healthy controls. The dermatoglyphic patterns on the fingers (total finger ridge count [TFRC]) and palms (a-b, b-c, and …

Deltamethrin is a widely used type II pyrethroid-based insecticide. Studies have indicated that neonatal exposure to deltamethrin, even at relatively low doses, results in behavioral and neurological changes. In the present study, the effect of early neonatal exposure to low doses of deltamethrin on the histogenesis of the cerebellar cortex was investigated. Materials and methods: Sprague Dawley male pups were exposed to deltamethrin daily at a dose of 1 mg/kg via intraperitoneal injection from the 2nd to the 5th postnatal day and sacrificed on postnatal days 6, 14, and 21. Following intracardiac perfusion, the cerebellum was removed, embedded with paraffin …

Clinically and neuropathologically dementia is a very heterogeneous disease. Alzheimer's disease (Alzheimer disease, AD), the most common cause of dementia, is an acquired cognitive and behavioral impairment of sufficient severity that markedly interferes with social and occupational functioning. This disease may be manifested as progressive memory problems, visuospatial deterioration, aphasia and/or deficits of executive functions. The patient we report here is a 73-year-old female patient with loss of ability of finding directions and understanding the shapes of materials. Her complaints increased progressively during the last two years. Even if she had retired from tailoring, she had deterioration in the visuospatial …

The aim of the present study was to determine the relative frequency of recurrent pneumonia in children and to describe its underlying illnesses. Materials and methods: Children between 3 months and 16 years old who had a history of 2 or more episodes of pneumonia per year, or 3 or more episodes in a lifetime were investigated retrospectively at Doctor Sami Ulus Children's Training and Research Hospital between January 2002 and December 2004. Results: Out of 595 children admitted for pneumonia, 62 (10.42%) met the criteria for recurrent pneumonia. An underlying illness was demonstrated in 56 patients (90.32%). In this …

To evaluate the efficacy of the biphasic and triphasic dynamic multidedector computerized tomography (MDCT) in the preoperative prediction of histological subtypes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Materials and methods: The preoperative dynamic MDCT findings of 51 patients with renal mass who had undergone nephrectomy were reviewed retrospectively. Twenty-five of the patients had biphasic (portal and excretory) and 26 had triphasic (arterial, portal, and excretory) MDCT images. Tumor size, presence of calcification, tumor-aorta attenuation values in all phases and homogeneicity of the tumor were noted for every patient. In heterogeneous tumors, the minimum and maximum attenuation values were noted to determine …
