Background/aim: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and association of mesenteric panniculitis (MP) with other diseases and the clinicoradiological features of MP, and to examine computed tomography findings to estimate the presence of malignancy in patients with MP. Materials and methods: Between September 2012 and August 2016, we used a keyword search to identify patients diagnosed with MP. Associated diseases and malignancies of patients were recorded. Cut-off values and diagnostic efficiencies of total MP scores and short and long diameters of the greatest lymph nodes were determined. Results: Out of 22,033 patients, 309 were determined to have MP (prevalence …

Aim: An experimental study was performed to evaluate the effect of CO_2 pneumoperitoneum on intra-abdominal (IA) and intra-esophageal (IE) pH. Material and methods: The study included 18 Wistar rats. In the control group (n = 6) a pH catheter was inserted into the peritoneal cavity via a left upper quadrant incision and another catheter was inserted into the lower esophagus via the oral route. Pre- and post-insufflation IA and IE pH were recorded every 5 min for 1 h. In the experimental groups, in addition to pH catheters, a 16-G catheter was inserted into the abdomen above the umbilicus. In …

Mesenteric lipodystrophy is a rare and benign disease characterized by non-specific inflammation of mesenteric fat. Nomenclature of the disease changes according to the histological features and clinical presentation. The etiology is still obscure, and the clinical presentation and laboratory tests are non-specific. In the majority of cases, the diagnosis is primarily based on computerized tomography (CT) features. There is no specific treatment available for mesenteric lipodystrophy. Radical surgical treatment is not advised. We report a case of distended abdomen caused by mesenteric lipodystrophy along with ultrasonography (US), CT and magnetic resonance (MR) findings and a review of the literature.
