Listen To Us: Dad-Endorsed Strategies For Ehdi Professionals, Holly F. Pedersen Dr., Jerusha Olthoff Jun 2019

Listen To Us: Dad-Endorsed Strategies For Ehdi Professionals, Holly F. Pedersen Dr., Jerusha Olthoff

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

While fathers play an increasingly important role in today’s families, there is an imbalance of research regarding fathers of children with disabilities compared to mothers. Modest research with mothers of children who are deaf/hard of hearing exists; however, very limited research is available specific to fathers of that population. With the advent of newborn hearing screening, the number of children who have hearing loss being identified within the first six months of life has significantly increased. Thus, the number of fathers participating in EHDI services has also increased. Seeking to answer the question, What do fathers’ experiences in the early …

Scanning For Qi: Resident And Sonographer Driven Improvement Of Radiology Resident Ultrasound Technique, Brian Blumhof, Md, Corinne Wessner, Bs, Rdms, Rvt, Kristen Mcclure, Md

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2016-2019)

Objective

The aim of this structural QI project is to improve the educational ultrasound curriculum , thus improving overall resident confidence and technical ability in acquiring diagnostic quality sonographic images.

Comparing resident confidence levels and performance against their initial benchmarks as well as against yearly cohorts, we plan to create a long standing addition to the radiology residency at Jefferson, with plans to include additional ultrasound examinations as the curriculum becomes more robust.

Stakeholders include not only the radiology residency, which would benefit from improved resident education and knowledge, but also the hospital and ultimately patients, who stand to benefit …

Evaluation Of A Text-Based Event Reporting Process On Resident Event Reporting Rates, R. B. Jones, C. L. Devin, D. Chalikonda, B. Menachem, R. Kanesa-Thasan, K. Klinger, B. Babula, R. Jaffe Jun 2019

Evaluation Of A Text-Based Event Reporting Process On Resident Event Reporting Rates, R. B. Jones, C. L. Devin, D. Chalikonda, B. Menachem, R. Kanesa-Thasan, K. Klinger, B. Babula, R. Jaffe

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2016-2019)

Background

Voluntary event reporting is crucial to identify problem areas in healthcare. At TJUH, resident reporting from July to February during FY19 represented 2% of all report, compared to nursing who accounted for 77% of reports. Resident physicians witness events but do not report them due to cumbersome reporting platform, absence of feedback about reports, lack of reinforcement on how and what to report, and a mindset of not wanting to cause trouble (1,2). Our project aimed to lower the barrier of high administrative reporting burden for residents to report events by creating a HIPAA-compliant, mobile event reporting system.

Optimizing Resident Clinic Efficiency Through Process Flow Analysis, Michael Abendroth, Md, Mba, Saumya Copparam, Md, Qiang Zhang, Phd, Rose Costello, Ma, Tara Uhler, Md, Robert Bailey, Md

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2016-2019)

Abstract

Introduction: Clinic process inefficiencies cause lengthy visit and wait times, which frustrate patients and providers and limit clinic capacity

Objective: To identify process inefficiencies and assess process flow interventions

Methods: Prospective, consecutive series of resident clinic visits over a 3-week period after transferring refraction from tech to resident. Personnel recorded the time spent waiting for and undergoing each clinic process. The clinic also piloted a “Fast Track” from registration to resident for appropriate established patients.

Results: Patients spent 53% of the visit waiting, primarily for the tech. Transferring refraction from tech to resident decreased the wait for tech …

In this article we will outline our experiences with student paramedic research at Fanshawe College, and will expand on our previous reporting of this initiative.

Healthcare Access And Poverty Among Central Appalachian Residents, Kacey M. Lefevers Jun 2019

Healthcare Access And Poverty Among Central Appalachian Residents, Kacey M. Lefevers

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

Healthcare access is an important shaping force in the lives of Appalachian people. Appalachians often face both inadequate availability of medical facilities and poverty, which limits access to health insurance and therefore healthcare. This results in reduced life expectancy and health disparity. In this study, the author examines relationships between adequate healthcare and access to healthcare among Appalachian residents. Using a convenience sample of Appalachian residents, the author finds that income, education, and being an Appalachian resident have unique impacts on healthcare access or perceptions of healthcare in general.

Just Culture: It's More Than Policy, Linda Ann Paradiso, Nancy Sweeney Jun 2019

Just Culture: It's More Than Policy, Linda Ann Paradiso, Nancy Sweeney

Publications and Research

Any healthcare organization’s top priority is effective and safe care. Despite this, medical error is the third-leading cause of death in the US. Hospitals are imperfect systems where nurses have competing demands and are forced to improvise and develop workarounds. Errors rarely occur in a vacuum, rather they’re a sequence of events with multiple opportunities for correction. Clinical nurses can have a significant impact on reducing errors due to their proximity to patients. When errors are identified, the events and impact on safe care need to be shared. Just culture is a safe haven that supports reporting. In a just …

The Top 10 Things To Know About Transfusion Medicine Before Intern Year: An Evidence-Based Course For Graduating Medical Students., Alexis R. Peedin, Irina Perjar, Marshall A. Mazepa, Marian A. Rollins-Raval, Yara A. Park, Jay S. Raval

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Background: Transfusion medicine (TM) knowledge varies widely among physician trainees. In addition, there have been few instances in which curricular changes have been meaningfully assessed for TM education in medical school.

Methods: We created and presented a novel lecture to improve TM knowledge for graduating medical students using eight objectives designed to reinforce critical information about blood management. Each objective was coded according to unique color schemes, fonts, and graphics to create visual associations while quickly and clearly presenting complex concepts. The validated BEST Collaborative exam was used to measure changes in student TM knowledge, while a survey was conducted …

Preparing Learners For Learning In The Engaged Learning Classroom, Maryam Alizadeh, Dean Parmelee, Irina Overman, Mohamad Aljasem

Medical Education Faculty Publications

This set of Tips is written to make the best use of an Engaged Learning Classroom (ELC), which some may refer to as the ‘flipped classroom.’ Strategies for the ELC include Team-Based Learning (TBL), Peer Instruction (PI), Case-Based Learning (CBL). Our focus will be on the design and implementation of the out-of-class phase for any ELC activity since this is as important as the in-class phase, but often neglected. Experience has shown that the quality of learning from the ELC is highly dependent on the preparation before, and follow-up to the class session. The instructor’s designation of material (written, audio-visual, …

Graduate Medical Education Research Day Compendium

Anyone engaged in research knows that the process can be daunting. Add the rigors of training in a graduate medical education program to this, and it might seem all but impossible to accomplish anything meaningful. However, the individuals highlighted in our 2019 Graduate Medical Education Research Day Compendium were able to overcome those odds. Their abstracts are showcased here and their efforts to advance the collective knowledge in their respective fields are commendable. We thank these Resident and Fellow Physicians and all who have supported them in their endeavors to reach this point with their research. Most of all, we …
