Shingrix Education For Providers, Lindsey Hanks Buzzeo Sep 2019

Shingrix Education For Providers, Lindsey Hanks Buzzeo

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Shingles is a prevalent disease within the overall population, and incidence in North America continues to increase. Shingles is commonly found in older adults 60 years of age and older and can recur two or three times. Shingrix was released in 2017 as a recombinant vaccine for prevention of shingles. Despite its benefits, this vaccine has not been recommended by many prescribing providers. Research has shown that an effective education program improves attitudes and misconceptions related to vaccines and can increase prescribing rates. An education program was created to share with prescribing providers to improve overall knowledge and recommendation rates …

The Role Of Using Formative Assessments In Problem-Based Learning: A Health Sciences Education Perspective, Kristi W. Kelley, Julaine M. Fowlin, Andrew A. Tawfik, Max C. Anderson

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Practitioners in the field of pharmacy are often confronted with ill-structured problems. Specifically, pharmacists are tasked with making patient-specific recommendations that are both safe and effective, which requires combining knowledge from the biomedical, behavioral, and pharmaceutical sciences. Given the dynamic nature of pharmacy as a profession, the field has begun to explore learning strategies that go beyond mere content coverage to strategies that better support higher-order learning outcomes. One of these approaches is problem-based learning (PBL). While studies have focused on how to support PBL to improve learning outcomes, the role of assessment is often overlooked. Further exploration is thus …

International Journal of Health Sciences Education

Introduction and Background: Interprofessional education (IPE) is outlined in many health professions education standards creating an increased demand for its inclusion in already crowded curricula with limited faculty and financial resources. The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) developed “Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice” that outline a framework for meaningful IPE experiences. Case-based learning activities have been used to foster improvements in interprofessional role clarity, communication, and rapport among student groups. The authors describe one trial of incorporating interprofessional and team work activities in a shared professional course and report on student learning outcomes in the context of IPEC competencies.

The "ED Stories" project is a novel method for promoting individual wellness and interpersonal relationships on a virtual platform in an emergency medicine residency program. We engaged multiple individuals across all levels of medical training on a virtual platform to facilitate discussion regarding difficult situations, patient interactions, and tips on how to succeed in challenge circumstances in the future. The platform was outlined as a "safe space," free of judgment and criticism. We engaged 54 participants with a culmination of 131 interactions; there were 14 original posts with a total of 22 comments. We believe that this virtual platform allowed …

Stem Opportunities - High School 2019, Huey-Xian Kelly Wong, Madeleine Rauhauser, Annie Morgan Nelson

Honors Program: Expanded Learning Clubs

This publication details the lesson plan for the “Opportunities in STEM” club for the summer of 2019. This club began out of a desire to educate high school students about the opportunities and careers available in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. Often, students feel that the prospect of entering a STEM field is daunting and out of their grasp. What it means to be a scientist is often unclear, and students never consider opportunities out of the fear of the unknown, particularly when science is associated with complexity and difficulty. This lesson plan integrates experiments with a wealth …

Context: Despite equal enrollment proportions in MD and PhD programs, there are fewer women than men in MD-PhD programs and academic medicine. Factors important in degree program selection, including the perception of gender disparities, among undergraduate students were characterized.

Methods: In 2017, pre-health students at four public North Carolina universities were invited to participate in an online survey regarding career plans, decision factors, and perceptions of gender disparities in MD, PhD and MD-PhD pathways. The authors characterized factors important to program selection, and evaluated the association of intended graduate program with perceived gender disparities using Fisher’s exact tests.

Examining Indigenous Learner Recruitment And Retention Strategies Through An Environmental Scan Of Canadian Medical Schools, Sebastian Deagle Aug 2019

Examining Indigenous Learner Recruitment And Retention Strategies Through An Environmental Scan Of Canadian Medical Schools, Sebastian Deagle

Head and Heart Posters 2019

The 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada’s Calls to Action Report outlined the need to better resolve the disparities in health status between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadian population. IN response, several Canadian medical schools began implementing recruitment and retention strategies to increase Indigenous matriculation. This is crucial, as Indigenous physicians are more likely to practice – and provide culturally-competent and comprehensive primary care – in Indigenous communities than physicians of other ethnicities. Therefore, enhancing Indigenous medical workforce development programs will have a strong return on investment in terms of improving the health status of Indigenous populations. However, while …

Assessment In The Interpersonal Domain: Experiences From Empathy Assessment In Medical Education, Neville Chiavaroli Aug 2019

Assessment In The Interpersonal Domain: Experiences From Empathy Assessment In Medical Education, Neville Chiavaroli

2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences

Frameworks for the teaching and assessment of 21st-century skills commonly recognise the importance of learning and skill development in the interpersonal domain. They also usually acknowledge the challenge of reliably and validly assessing students in this domain. In the field of medical education and in selecting students for medical courses, the concept of empathy has become central to representing the particular interpersonal understandings and skills expected of students and practising doctors. Attempts to assess these attributes during medical training are just as challenging as in school contexts. This presentation draws on several years’ experience of working with medical educators to …

Measuring Racial Microaggression In Medical Practice, Amanda Lee Almond Aug 2019

Measuring Racial Microaggression In Medical Practice, Amanda Lee Almond

Publications and Research

The purpose of the present study was to validate the already existing Racial Microaggression in Counseling Scale (RMCS) when the term “therapist” was replaced with “physician”, thus constituting the modification as the Racial Microaggression in Medical Practice Scale (RMMPS). Racial microaggressions work at reinforcing inferior social status on a cognitive level. Unlike overt racism, messages behind microaggression are subtler and more every day. A lack of acceptance, respect, and regard emerges from interactions in medical contexts as there are layers of in-group and out-group statuses at play (e.g., physician-patient, Black-White, expert-lay, and Westernized-alternative). The layer focused on in the present …

The focus of this study is to provide targeted resources to graduate level students that will both facilitate learning and guide advancement of metacognitive skills. The general study design included the creation of digital learning modules for a single course, their distribution to students as well as the evaluation of student access and course performance. The learning modules, designated ‘Preview Pal’, were structured to creatively engage learners with varied learning style preferences in order to benefit all students in …

Comparisons Of Preoperative Blood Pressures In Surgical Patients, Brian Stacy, Kenn B Daratha Aug 2019

Comparisons Of Preoperative Blood Pressures In Surgical Patients, Brian Stacy, Kenn B Daratha

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Background Surgical patients expect anesthesia providers to provide high quality care. Blood pressure variability must be mitigated by establishing the patient’s blood pressure baseline and sustaining it through surgery. A consensus has not been established on which blood pressure measurement should be used as the patient’s baseline. Blood pressures before surgery in multiple care settings have been shown to vary. This may result in differences in drug and fluid administration, depending on the blood pressure considered baseline by the anesthesia provider. The purpose of this observational evidence-based practice project was to compare mean blood pressures leading up to surgery among …

Intraoperative Hypotension In Non-Cardiac Surgery Patients At Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Genna Ledrew, Kenn B Daratha Aug 2019

Intraoperative Hypotension In Non-Cardiac Surgery Patients At Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Genna Ledrew, Kenn B Daratha

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Background Intraoperative Hypotension (IOH) during non-cardiac surgery is a common side effect of anesthesia that is associated with acute kidney injury (AKI), myocardial injury (MI), mortality, and other adverse outcomes1,3,4. These risks increase as the duration and severity of IOH exposure increase3,4. Blood pressure is a modifiable risk factor of mortality and organ damage that can be readily treated by the anesthesia provider2 . Limiting IOH can improve patient outcomes and produce monetary savings5 . The objective of this project is to report the incidence of IOH at a large tertiary teaching hospital, and extrapolate the risks of mortality and …

Predicting Residency Match Outcomes For Fourth-Year Medical Students., Jacob Shreffler Aug 2019

Predicting Residency Match Outcomes For Fourth-Year Medical Students., Jacob Shreffler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An important goal for undergraduate medical education program leaders is to prepare their medical students to successfully match during the National Residency Match Program (Gauer & Jackson, 2017). Due to the recent increase in applications submitted during the residency process, it is critical for medical education programs to better understand the factors and attributes of those medical students who are successfully matching (Liang, Curtin, Signer, & Sawoia, 2017). As there is a larger number of medical students now enrolled than positions available for residency, the number of unmatched seniors is expected to rise (Bumsted, Schenider, & Deiorio, 2017). Additionally, the …

Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Mental Health Outcomes And Related Prescription Practices In A Psychiatric Inpatient Sample, Carrie Lemay Aug 2019

Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Mental Health Outcomes And Related Prescription Practices In A Psychiatric Inpatient Sample, Carrie Lemay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A definitive association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and negative physical and mental health outcomes has been established. There is evidence that individuals in forensic psychiatric facilities are disproportionately exposed to ACEs, which may impact severity, prognosis, and age of onset of psychiatric symptoms, including behavioral concerns of institutional aggression, self-harm behaviors, and suicide attempts. Such psychiatric and behavioral concerns are often managed through multiple psychotropic prescriptions, leading to psychotropic polypharmacy. This study evaluated the relationship between ACEs, mental health and behavioral concerns, and psychotropic polypharmacy through analysis of archival data from a forensic inpatient psychiatric facility. A total of …
