Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Increases Pathology Resident Self Wellness, Kaitlin Collura, Md, Phd, Joanna Chan, Md
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Posters
Stress during medical residency is a common, complex issue influenced by time demands, level of social support, and environmental factors. Increased stress levels can lead to resident burnout, and may contribute to the high rates of depression and suicide seen among physicians. In 2015, the ACGME began a campaign to promote resident wellness by calling on programs to implement strategies to develop resiliency, identify problems, and promote wellbeing. Mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) strategies have been shown to decrease burnout, improve mood, and increase compassion in healthcare providers. We implemented a wellness retreat to educate residents on the principles of …

Objective: to investigate the perspectives and experiences of the faculties specializing in brain and neural sciences regarding brain-friendly teaching-learning in Iran. Methods: 17 faculties from 5 universities were selected by purposive sampling (2018). In-depth semi-structured interviews with directed content analysis were used. Results: 31 sub-subcategories, 10 subcategories, and 4 categories were formed according to the “General teaching model”. “Mentorship” was a newly added category. Conclusions: A neuro-educational approach that consider the roles of the learner’s brain uniqueness, executive function facilitation, and the valence system are important to learning. Such learning can be facilitated through cognitive load considerations, repetition, deep questioning, …

Vocal Hygiene For Musical Theatre Performers, Anne M. Koziara, Dr. Ron Scherer
Vocal Hygiene For Musical Theatre Performers, Anne M. Koziara, Dr. Ron Scherer
Honors Projects
There have been numerous “do’s - and - don’t’s” vocal hygiene pamphlets made for voice users, however, a guide for vocal hygiene for musical theatre performers is not typically included in these pamphlets. Musical theatre performers differ from other professional voice users, because in addition to singing, they also have the taxing responsibilities of acting and dancing. As a result, many musical theatre performers have questions and often seem confused about what proper vocal hygiene should be for them. The goal of this honors project was to create an advisory brochure on vocal hygiene specifically for musical theatre performers. This …

Clinical experience in the healthcare field plays a crucial role in shaping future professionals into competent and well-rounded providers. Equally important is the ability to facilitate the learning process of learners to promote self-directed, lifelong learning and critical thinking.1-3 Preceptorship can vary in approach depending on the design of the learning experience: direct instruction, modeling, coaching, mentoring, and facilitiation.4-6 In addition, there are many teaching tools available such as One-Minute Preceptor, layered teaching, providing reflections, and thinking out loud.7-9 To be an effective preceptor, developing skills through self-reflection and seeking out professional development to strengthen areas of weakness are important. …

Medical Marijuana Policy Reform Reaches Florida: A Scoping Review, Khadesia Howell, Alexandria Washington, Paula M. Williams, Arlesia L. Mathis, John S. Luque
Florida Public Health Review
Background: Florida became the first state in the U.S. South to legalize the use of medical marijuana to treat a variety of health conditions including chronic pain, epilepsy, and spasticity symptoms from multiple sclerosis.
