Leadership, Anthony Pearson-Shaver, Evan Layton

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Though they become responsible for leading teams and supervising more junior learners early in their career, physicians receive little formal leadership training. The “see one, do one, teach one” approach to behavioral modeling and mentorship does not serve the modern young physician well. The complex nature of modern healthcare demands that physicians learn to work within the teams they will often come to lead. Within these teams, members often look to physicians to fill leadership roles. This review will examine effective leadership as defined by the business community, review attempts to incorporate leadership training into graduate medical education programs and …

The Words We Use, The Actions We Take, And The Perceptions We Hold: First-Step Assessments To Inform Wellness Curricula And Burnout Prevention Programming, Karen Horneffer-Ginter, Jeffrey Greene, Lisa Graves, Kristine Gibson, Roger Apple, Julia Tullio, Adrienne Kaufman

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: In response to concerns about burnout, many medical schools have been initiating wellness curricula and programming. A key to the success of these efforts is having engagement from targeted audiences. Gathering input from these groups regarding preferred lexicon, wellness actions, and perceptions of judgement or guilt around such actions can help in developing and promoting such curricular and programmatic offerings. Engagement is especially important when it comes to the predictors of burnout (e.g., self-care, self-compassion, and emotional self-disclosure).

Methods: Utilizing a focus-group methodology as a preliminary step, medical school faculty and students discussed terms regarding burnout predictors. Thematic analysis …

The Effect Of Perceptually Regulated Recovery On Lift Quality Of Females During Different Resistance Training Conditions, Sarah Matthews, Andrew Wolfe, Matt Laurent, Michael Luera, Ty Hill, Aaron Rinehart, David Sneed, Tyler Frank, Heath Mcpherson, Samantha Derda Feb 2021

The Effect Of Perceptually Regulated Recovery On Lift Quality Of Females During Different Resistance Training Conditions, Sarah Matthews, Andrew Wolfe, Matt Laurent, Michael Luera, Ty Hill, Aaron Rinehart, David Sneed, Tyler Frank, Heath Mcpherson, Samantha Derda

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Previous investigation identified the utilization of perceptually regulated recovery as a comparable, and occasionally optimal, method of regulating rest-time between bouts of exercise. Additionally, substantial variances in mean self-selected recovery time between male and female has recently been reported when completing resistance exercise intended to improve muscular strength. These finding suggested females recover quicker than males, and the current standardized intrasession rest recommendations may necessitate adjustments to account for sex specific responses. PURPOSE: The goal of the current investigate was to examine female lift quality responses to perceptually regulated intrasession recovery during various resistance training protocols. METHODS: Participants …

Does Mental Toughness Relate To Maximum Heart Rate During Secondary Prevention? Preliminary Evidence Of A Phase Ii Cardiac Rehabilitation Program., Josh Pian, Grant B. Morgan, Jeffrey S. Forsse, Shawn Hernandez, Christopher Rosser, Andreas Stamatis

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of cardiovascular events (CVEs) and deaths in the United States. Individuals, who experience a CVE, are currently referred to Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) phase II to improve their overall health and quality of life outcomes. Maximum Heart Rate (HRmax) is one of the strongest predictors of CR outcomes. Over the past few decades, psychological health has been recognized as a crucial part of CR outcomes. Mental toughness (MT) has been found to predict well-being. Research investigating the direction and the strength of the relationship between mental toughness (MT) and CR is scarce. PURPOSE: To …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Law enforcement is one of the most stressful occupations and investigations have demonstrated law enforcement officers (LEOs) have greater CVD-related morbidity and mortality than the general population. LEOs are chronically exposed to events including physical dangers and psychological stress. Every day, LEOs utilize their training to save lives and keep themselves and their communities safe, however, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams have duties that are beyond the scope of normal law enforcement personnel. Part of this training includes the use of firearms to prepare officers to protect themselves and others in highly dangerous situations. Engaging in these dangerous situations …

Difference In Standardized Repetitions Completed At 1- Repetition Maximum Load Percentages For Women, Aaron Rinehart, Andrew A. Wolfe, Matt Laurent Feb 2021

Difference In Standardized Repetitions Completed At 1- Repetition Maximum Load Percentages For Women, Aaron Rinehart, Andrew A. Wolfe, Matt Laurent

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

In resistance training, a given training load is determined by two factors, volume (number of repetitions completed) and intensity (weight lifted). The current literature clearly recognizes an inverse relationship between the weight lifted and repetitions completed. The previous studies establishing intensity-to-repetition ratios predominantly utilized male participants. Research has yet to explore and determine appropriate resistance training intensity-repetition ratios for females. PURPOSE: Furthermore, the purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between achieved repetitions and load lifted (a percentage of 1RM) of college females. METHODS: Subjects included 11 females with six month of consistent resistance training experience. Each participant …

Determining The Attitudes & Use Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine (Cam) Among Collegiate Athletes, Baylee C. Rejcek, Andrea L. Green, Megan B. Haynes

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

There are many different approaches to medicine, so it is necessary to expand current knowledge on what patients and clinicians are using. Efforts to expand complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) research will enhance clinicians’ perspectives by not only creating an interest in becoming educated on the topic, but also by challenging negative perspectives to become more unbiased. Clinicians should educate themselves and patients in a way that is non-discriminatory. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to gain insight on what medicinal practices collegiate-level athletes are utilizing in effort to heal themselves, whether that be physically, mentally, or spiritually. METHODS: …

Enhancing Mental Toughness In Student-Athletes During The Covid-19 Pandemic Via Educational-Based Psychological Skills Training: Preliminary Results Of A Pilot Study, Madison Giuliani, Grant Morgan, Richard G. Cowden, Jeff S. Forsse, Andreas Stamatis Dr.

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

One group of measures against the COVID-19 pandemic have been the non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). NPIs taken by the NCAA included suspension of athletic seasons. Suspended championships during the pandemic have decimated the world of sports and led to changes in athletic role identity and social connectedness, which negatively affected student-athletes’ mental health (MH). One psychological characteristic that has the potential to support the MH and well-being of athletes is mental toughness (MT). MT is associated with successful sport performance and positive MH outcomes. Although empirical evidence supports the effectiveness of educational-based psychological skills training (PST) in promoting MH, similar effects …

Zaragoza, Ariane Secrest, Lemuel W. Taylor Iv

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Calorie tracking applications are commonly used by athletes and the general population to monitor their nutritional intake. Users depend on the accuracy of these applications in order to achieve goals relating to performance or body composition. Resting energy expenditure (REE) is the minimum number of calories the body would need to maintain its function for a 24-hour period of non-activity and the largest component of total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). Although these applications are trusted and used on a daily basis, there is little data to support or disprove their accuracy. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

One challenge facing healthcare training programs is balancing the need to provide students with interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice (CP) opportunities in the context of highly prescribed standards-driven curricula (e.g. nursing and speech-language pathology). An infusion-based approach is an option for institutions and standards-driven programs that do not have specific IPE/CP courses or open electives in their curriculum.

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Over the past few years, I've had the honor to represent Pathways to Housing PA in the interprofessional collaborative work with JCIPE on the project called ESHP (Enhancing Services for Homeless Populations). This partnership opportunity was as much exciting as it was needed. Many professionals in the healthcare field have the driving compassion and desire to improve someone's life; after all, staying healthy is one of the most important aspects of life. While many who choose to work in a health profession strive to deliver the best service, young healthcare professionals have very little practice and/or knowledge on how to …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Welcome to the fall 2020/winter 2021 issue of the JCIPE newsletter. 2020 was a year like no other. We witnessed and weathered the impact of the COVID pandemic in a variety of ways, and felt it on nearly every aspect of our professional and personal lives. We also collectively witnessed atrocities too numerous to count, resulting from the deep-seated systemic racism that is intrinsically tied to health disparities and inequities in this country.

The pain and adversity has made this a dark time in our history, yet, has enabled us, individually and communally, to heed and recognized historically marginalized voices, …
