S14: Factors Affecting Dental Students’ Comfort With Online Synchronous Learning, Roberto Lara Ms, Olivia R. Kalloo Ms, Mariana Pavlova Dmd, Donna Kritz-Silverstein Phd, David G. Mcmillan Dds

Annual Research Symposium

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many universities to expand the use of videoconferencing technology to continue academic coursework. This study examines dental students’ experience with videoconferencing technology, comfort levels, and perceptions of using videoconferencing technology.

Methods: 54 out of 100 second-year dental students enrolled in a course on local anesthesia, 54 completed a survey following an online synchronous lecture given in September 2020. Survey questions asked about prior experience with videoconferencing, comfort levels, and reasons for not turning on their video (showing their face).

Results: Overall, 48.2% had little or no prior experience with videoconferencing prior to March 2020. …

S3: Post-Covid-19 Recovery Care Plan For Older Adults With Continuing Symptoms Of Breathlessness And Fatigue, Nancy M. Bryan, Marie Wright-Rolf Edd, Msn, Rn, Siboney Zelaya Ph.D., Mph, Msn Ed, Rn, Justin Carbonel

Annual Research Symposium

Background:

The CDC research actively continues gathering information related to short and long-term symptoms that remain following the acute phase of Covid-19 diagnosis (CDC, 2020).

Fatigue and shortness of breath are listed among the most commonly reported long-term symptoms of Covid-19:

  1. Fatigue
  2. Shortness of Breath
  3. Cough
  4. Joint Pain
  5. Chest Pain (CDC, 2020).

Evidence suggests that older adults over the age of 60 who have multiple comorbidities are more susceptible and are at a higher risk of contracting the Covid-19 virus thus potentially prolonging recovery time post diagnosis (Greenhalgh, Knight, A’Court, Buxton, & Husain, 2020).

Save The Rich, Connor Harris

English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World

The problem of medication pricing and lobbying in the healthcare industry has caused millions of people within the United States to not be able to afford medications essential to their lives. Pharmaceutical companies are taking advantage of the need people have for certain drugs by setting the sale price far higher than it costs to produce. My suggested solution is to make lobbying illegal in the United States so that pharmaceutical companies would not have control over government officials who pass laws to help or hurt the issue of medication pricing. Illegalizing government lobbying will take away the incentive politicians …

Associations Among Stress, Anxiety, Depression, And Emotional Intelligence Among Veterinary Medicine Students, Julia Wells, Kylie Watson, Robert E. Davis, Syed Siraj A. Quadri, Joshua R. Mann, Ashutosh Verma, Manoj Sharma, Vinayak K. Nahar

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Background: Veterinary students are faced with immense pressures and rigors during school. These pressures have contributed to elevated levels of stress, anxiety, and depression (SAD) among veterinary students relative to the general population. One proposed concept to help students combat SAD is that of emotional intelligence (EI). We explored the relationship between EI and SAD among veterinary students at a college in the Southeast United States. Methods: A crosssectional study design was implemented among a convenience sample of 182 veterinary medical students. The survey instrument contained 56 items that elicited information about students’ demographics, perceived stress, anxiety, and depression, and …

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Project of Merit Winner

PURPOSE: To examine the physical activity (PA) patterns among adults with arthritis and diabetes who receive self-management education. METHODS: Sample (n=28,860) included adults (≥ 18 years of age), with arthritis and diabetes who participated in the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Categories of PA were classified as highly active (HACT), moderately active (MACT), low activity (LACT), and inactive (INACT). Multinomial logistic regression analyses adjusted for age, gender, body mass index, race, smoking status, and socioeconomic status. RESULTS: When compared to a referent group of inactive adults, our findings suggest that adults with arthritis and diabetes …

Pharmacy Practice and Science Faculty Publications

Objective: To develop a mentor-supervised, interprofessional, geriatric telemedicine experiential education project in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Medical and pharmacy students collaborated via remote consultations to address the coexistence of multimorbidity and polypharmacy in geriatric patients. In-depth interviews of students and patients as well as Likert scale-based telephonic survey were performed for a comprehensive evaluation of the project’s significance. Results: To date, 49 consultations have been conducted. Remote consultations performed by medical and pharmacy students working collaboratively were beneficial for both students, participants. Conclusions and Practice Implications: This experimental education project provided students with authentic challenges while simultaneously delivering …

Time To First Blood Glucose Determination And Administration Of Intravenous Glucose At Birth In Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants, Jihan Esmail, Ramasubbareddy Dhanireddy Md Apr 2021

Time To First Blood Glucose Determination And Administration Of Intravenous Glucose At Birth In Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants, Jihan Esmail, Ramasubbareddy Dhanireddy Md

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

Background: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants are prone to hypoglycemia unless intravenous glucose is administered within an hour (golden hour) of life. These infants often require resuscitation at birth, but monitoring and intervention for hypoglycemia may be delayed.

Objectives: (1) Study the time to first blood glucose determination and IV glucose administration at birth in ELBW infants, (2) determine the incidence of hypoglycemia, <47mg/dl, and severe hypoglycemia, <40mg/dl, at admission, (3) determine risk factors for hypoglycemia, and (4) compare clinical outcomes at discharge between hypoglycemic and euglycemic infants.

Methods: 244 ELBW (≤1000g birth weight) infants born during Jan 2017- Feb 2020 at the Regional One Health NICU, Memphis, TN were included in the study. Data collected included maternal and infant clinical, demographic, and outcomes …

Hyperglycemia During The First Three Days Of Life Increases The Risk Of Retinopathy Of Prematurity In Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants, Jihan M. Esmail, Ramasubbareddy Dhanireddy Md Apr 2021

Hyperglycemia During The First Three Days Of Life Increases The Risk Of Retinopathy Of Prematurity In Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants, Jihan M. Esmail, Ramasubbareddy Dhanireddy Md

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

Background: The association between hyperglycemia and ROP has been inconsistent in previous studies. Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants are at high risk for ROP. They also experience hypoglycemia initially and hyperglycemia while receiving IV glucose infusion. The effect of initial hypoglycemia on hyperglycemia associated ROP risk is unknown.

Objective: To study the effect of initial hypoglycemia and subsequent hyperglycemia during the first three days of life on the incidence of ROP and severe ROP in ELBW (birth weight ≤1000g) infants.

Methods: Clinical and demographic data were collected from 227 ELBW infants born during the years 2017-2019 at the Regional …
