Neuroscience Articles

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is an effective neuromodulation therapy for chronic neuropathic and nociceptive pain. Although the total number of PNS implantations has increased over the last decade, no curriculum exists to guide training and learning of this therapy. The goal of the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS) education committee is to develop a series of competency-based curriculums for neuromodulation therapies. The PNS curriculum is the latest part of such series, following the curriculums for spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal drug delivery system.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multidisciplinary task force (anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurosurgery, preventive medicine and …

AUDIENCE: This simulation is appropriate for emergency medicine (EM) residents of all levels.

INTRODUCTION: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare, idiopathic condition that occurs in the mother around the time of childbirth. Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and/or reduced systolic function diagnosed in patients during the last month of pregnancy or up to five months following delivery defines PCCM.1 Another broader definition from the European Society of Cardiology defines PPCM as heart failure that occurs "towards the end of pregnancy or in the months following delivery, where no other cause of heart failure is found."2 Though PPCM occurs worldwide, …

Implementation Of Team-Based Learning In The Pre-Clerkship Medical Curriculum: Investigating Essential Elements, Jade Woodcock Apr 2023

Implementation Of Team-Based Learning In The Pre-Clerkship Medical Curriculum: Investigating Essential Elements, Jade Woodcock

Dissertations

Team-based learning (TBL) has been used in undergraduate medical education over the past 20 years. Available evidence suggests that there is a problem with how the core design elements are implemented. It is also unclear the extent to which faculty and students believe TBL supports the goals of undergraduate medical education (UME). The purpose of this research is to identify the essential elements of TBL, how those elements have been used by medical educators over the past 10 years, and identify if faculty and student believe TBL supports the goals of undergraduate medical education at a single medical school where …

A New Christmas Eve: Match Day Eve, Gehan A. Pendlebury Apr 2023

A New Christmas Eve: Match Day Eve, Gehan A. Pendlebury

be Still

The transition of medical student to resident physician represents the student becoming the teacher -- a teacher that will continue to evolve over time. Residents teach medical students, yet residents are taught by their attending physicians. In many ways, Match Day is a milestone marking the beginning of that incremental learning process. The word "doctor" derives from the Latin word “docere” meaning "to teach" as doctors should be teaching their patients good health in their practice of medicine. Likewise, it is an inherent responsibility of all physicians to pass on their knowledge and skills for the betterment of the next …

Dnp Final Report: Preventing Critical Care Nurse Burnout: An Evidence Based Approach To Raising Awareness, Trendalyn S. King

DNP Final Reports

Burnout has affected nurses nationally and globally for decades. Burnout in nurses is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of feelings of personal accomplishment. Consequences of burnout include physical and emotional suffering in nurses, poorer patient outcomes, and lost revenue and increased cost in healthcare organizations. Burnout is prevalent in many healthcare settings, but 81% of critical care nurses have reported severe symptoms of burnout, Because of the high risk of burnout in critical care nurses, raising awareness about burnout and its prevention in those nurses was imperative. The following PICOT question guided the search for evidence to support …
