Background and objectives: Given the inherent risks of seizure provocation in the epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU), both miscommunication and incomplete training about the importance of when and why certain measures are taken can cause critical gaps in care for patients in an especially vulnerable state. To provide a framework that would help minimize these potential pitfalls, our objectives were 2-fold: (1) identify deficits in EMU safety and assessment using a checklist of predetermined items, including key measures essential to the care of EMU patients and (2) develop a simulation training program to address these deficits with education for staff on …

Coping Strategies And Stress Of The Undergraduate Nursing Student In The Clinical Setting: An Evidence Based Practice Quantitative Study, Ashley Calverley Mar 2024

Coping Strategies And Stress Of The Undergraduate Nursing Student In The Clinical Setting: An Evidence Based Practice Quantitative Study, Ashley Calverley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The assessment of perceived stress and coping behaviors related to first-semester clinical might benefit students in nursing education. The assessment of most common coping behaviors and perceived stress related to the clinical setting is essential due to difference in personalities, learning abilities, and coping behaviors among nursing students today. Previous research has suggested the initial clinical period results in adverse outcomes, such as poor academic performance, elevated burnout levels, and diminished personal well-being. These factors are detrimental to academic success in nursing programs. Evidence supports that helping students develop positive stress/coping abilities will aid in adapting in both the academic …

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to training programs abruptly stopping in-person learning and redesigning curricula. Trainees had decreased patient contact. Trainee well-being became even more vital with social isolation and fears of infecting loved ones increased. Our study evaluated impacts of COVID-19 on Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) fellowship programs, including effects on fellows’ clinical and didactic experiences, and effects on fellows’ well-being.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, two surveys inquiring about the impact of COVID-19 on PEM fellowship training were developed using an iterative process: one for Program Directors (PDs) and one for fellows. Survey questions, which consisted of multiple …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory skin condition of the pilosebaceous unit in adolescents and young adults and is primarily characterized by the presence of open and closed comedones. In patients of various skin pigmentations, skin-colored comedones may be difficult to appreciate and lead to incorrect or delayed diagnosis of acne. To aid in the identification of acne vulgaris in patients of various skin pigmentations, we present comedonal acne in different skin types and commonly encountered differential diagnoses. With its significant volume and burden of disease, acne vulgaris should be correctly identified in various skin pigmentations by primary care clinicians …

Comparison Of In-Person Versus Virtual Ultrasound Instruction For Pediatric Residents, Jason T. Gillon, E. Liang Liu, Valerie Dutreuil, Stephanie G. Cohen, Lekha A. Shah

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Purpose: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) instruction is prevalent in medical schools but not in pediatric residency programs, even though the majority of pediatric residents desire POCUS instruction. Virtual ultrasound instruction with affordable handheld ultrasound devices may help remedy this deficiency by allowing qualified instructors to circumvent geographic and financial limitations to reach this population. This study sought to determine if virtual ultrasound instruction is an effective alternative to traditional in-person instruction in a cohort of pediatric residents for the extended Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (eFAST) exam. Methods: Pediatric residents were randomized to receive either in-person or virtual instruction to …

Angiofibroma Of Soft Tissue: A Case Report, Mehruba Alam, Jake Robins Feb 2024

Angiofibroma Of Soft Tissue: A Case Report, Mehruba Alam, Jake Robins

Annual Research Symposium

Differentiation between benign angiofibromas of soft tissue and malignant sarcomas.

The accurate diagnosis of this tumor is essential to prevent additional unnecessary treatments and/or surgeries. This can be achieved by proper genetic testing for the presence of markers including the NCOA2 fusion gene, CD34, α-SMA, and epithelial membrane antigen. Genetic testing is an essential component of accurate diagnosis as the appearance of these lesions can mimic other, more harmful neoplasms. Immunohistochemical analysis frequently shows the AHRR-NCOA2 driver mutation which is thought to be associated with t(5;8)(p15;q13), also commonly found in AFSTs. In combination, these immunohistochemical findings allow for accurate diagnosis …

Revolutionizing Denture Excellence: An Invigorating In-Vitro Exploration Of Organic Products In Prosthetic Rehabilitation, Nighila Ravindran, Sneha Joseph, Aswani Surya K

Annual Research Symposium

The denture base comes into contact with diverse substances in the oral cavity, acting as a reservoir for microorganisms like corynebacterium, streptococcus, lactobacillus, and candida. This colonization elevates the risk of complications such as denture stomatitis and candidiasis. Commercial denture cleaners have explored the use of natural ingredients, less commonly employed but offering various advantages. These ingredients aim to mitigate the potential issues associated with microbial colonization on denture surfaces, contributing to improved oral hygiene for denture wearers. The exploration of natural elements reflects a nuanced approach to denture care, considering both efficacy and less conventional alternatives.
