The Effect Of Virtual Standardized Patient Integrated Health Coach Training On Professional Confidence Gain In Veterans Health Administration Primary Care Nurses, David Mullins Mar 2024

The Effect Of Virtual Standardized Patient Integrated Health Coach Training On Professional Confidence Gain In Veterans Health Administration Primary Care Nurses, David Mullins

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Poor health behaviors cost the United States billions of dollars and tens of thousands of lives every year. The Veterans Affairs primary care delivery model uses health coaching as a catalyst to improve health behaviors in veterans. Health coaching is a complex skill that requires specialized training, repetitive practice, and professional confidence. Albert Bandura believed most people acquire skills and develop the confidence to use those skills through social learning. He posited that professional confidence played a critical role in skill acquisition, and people with low professional confidence were less likely to attempt to perform a skill. Bandura’s Theory of …

Undergraduate Nursing Education Simulation Training Using Virtual Reality Goggles And Teamstepps Methodology, Jennifer Koalenz

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Abstract

Due to changes in educational processes during global pandemic restrictions and the rapid pace of innovation and developments in virtual reality technology, this modality of education is expected to become a common presence in healthcare education. Immersive simulation activities can be an effective way to facilitate collaboration and communication skills in a constructivist-based classroom. Evidence shows that virtual simulation improves critical thinking skills, psychomotor skills, and decision making (Padilha et al., 2019). In addition, the availability of an on-demand, customizable scenario is highly useful to supplement clinical learning when necessary. But many caution that virtual simulation, just like any …

Spontaneous Tumor Lysis Syndrome In A Patient With Recent Diagnosis Of Multiple Myeloma — An Unusual Presentation, Taha Al Hassan, Olga G. Cantu-Rodriguez, Eunbee Cho, Edgar G. Dorsey Trevino

Research Symposium

Background: Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is an oncologic emergency that surfaces as a constellation of metabolic imbalances due to the rapid destruction of cancer cells and subsequent dissemination of their contents. However, a markedly rare subtype of TLS, known as spontaneous TLS (STLS), occurs without an evident trigger, such as cytotoxic therapy, and carries a similar mortality risk. It is paramount to recognize high-risk cases early and implement therapeutic measures to prevent complications of STLS.

Case Presentation: We present the case of a 74-year-old gentleman with a recent diagnosis of Kappa-restricted multiple myeloma who presented with worsening weakness, tremors, ataxia, …

Implementation Of Mindfulness & Stress Reduction Training For Medical Students, Jill Berenato

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Abstract

This proposal advocates for implementing mandatory mindfulness and stress reduction training sessions for surgical students at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). It is well-documented that medical students, particularly those in surgical disciplines, experience high levels of stress, which can negatively impact their mental health, academic performance and overall well-being. Mindfulness-based interventions have shown promise in reducing stress and enhancing resilience among medical students. By integrating mindfulness training into the surgical curriculum, PCOM aims to equip students with essential coping skills to effectively manage stress, thereby promoting their mental health and academic success. This handout serves to accompany the …

Utilizing Social Media To Increase Skill Confidence In Parenteral Medication Administration In Undergraduate Practical Nursing Students, Natalie K. Hernandez Mar 2024

Utilizing Social Media To Increase Skill Confidence In Parenteral Medication Administration In Undergraduate Practical Nursing Students, Natalie K. Hernandez

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

A major shift in education developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students and educators were forced to stay home, and new ways of learning emerged. Nursing is a hands on field and many skills must be learned hands on such as the technique for administering parenteral medications. To master a skill such as this you need to be able to hold the supplies and understand how to properly dose a medication. This was definitely a challenge to teach students hands-on skills when being in a hands on skill lab environment was not allowed. Nurse educators started to create innovative ways to teach …

Research Symposium

Introduction: The landscape of medical education has witnessed significant changes in recent years, marked by a decline in both in-person lecture attendance and online lecture viewership. This trend is particularly notable in the post-COVID-19 era and raises important questions about the relationship between lecture engagement and academic performance among medical students. Our study seeks to investigate the correlation between lecture viewership and course performance, with a specific focus on the unique context of the UTRGV School of Medicine. Our primary objectives were to (1) evaluate the correlation between lecture viewership and academic performance and (2) examine the relationship between lecture …

Collections of human remains in scientific and private institutions have a long tradition, though throughout history there has often been variable regard for the respect and dignity that these tissues demand. Recent public scandals around the use of human remains, coupled with an increasing community awareness around accountability in such instances, forces scholars to confront the ethical and moral concerns associated with these collections. This includes specific focus on the acquisition, storage, use, and disposition of these remains, which were often collected with no consent and with little knowledge, or concern, about the individual or their respective culture and practices …

Teaching Empathy: Comparison Of A Virtual Reality Experience Using Head-Mounted Display Versus Group Streaming, Dana Villmore, Elizabeth Dyer, Marilyn R. Gugliucci

Physician Assistant Faculty Publications

Empathy, an integral component of bedside manner, correlates with good healthcare provision. Training physician assistant (PA) students using Head-Mounted Display (HMD) virtual reality (VR) contributed to significant empathy increases. This pilot study, which relied on a retrospective analysis, compared a VR experience using HMD to a streamed modality (due to COVID safety) with PA students to measure empathy. We hypothesized that fully immersive, interactive HMD VR would lead to a statistically significant increase in empathy versus the streaming modality. The “Alfred Lab” VR allows viewers to “embody” a 74-year-old African American man with vision and hearing loss. The University of …
