Examining The Factor Structure Of A Subjective Well-Being Measure In A Medical Student Sample, Hoan Do, Mary Wurm-Schaar, Gordon Brooks

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Accreditation standards for U.S. medical education programming require that training programs promote trainee wellness and well-being, although constructs such as psychological distress and depression commonly serve as proxies for well-being. A direct measure of subjective well-being would be invaluable to inform programming efforts to promote medical trainees’ well-being and advance the study of the well-being construct itself. This study investigated the structural validity of subjective well-being as measured by the Well-Being Scale in a sample of 548 osteopathic medical students. Results of the confirmatory factor analysis indicated that subjective well-being is best represented by a bifactor model with a general …

Investing In Health, Not Speed: Alternatives To Medication For Managing Adhd Symptoms In Children And Adolescents, Hananiah A. Blomberg Apr 2024

Investing In Health, Not Speed: Alternatives To Medication For Managing Adhd Symptoms In Children And Adolescents, Hananiah A. Blomberg

Classical Conversations

The American culture values speed. While this is often beneficial, making it the chief value is dangerous. In that position, it drives people to pursue instant gratification with minimal effort or risk other values of greater importance. This is evident in America’s medical field, where the rapid results of ADHD medication are embraced at the expense of children’s health. ADHD stands for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, “one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood” (“What is ADHD?”, “Symptoms and Diagnosis of ADHD”). Once it is diagnosed by a clinician, treatment options are evaluated. Medication, both stimulant and non-stimulant, is a primary …

Changing The Way Providers Order Blood Return To Intensive Care Patients, Chloe Morris

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Patients with anemia and other conditions resulting in loss of blood often come with orders to return wasted blood to them. While using typical blood draw practices, patients are placed at an increased risk of infection when their blood is exposed to the outside world. My question is, will using a closed system decrease the instances of infection in patients who receive their waste blood after draws? By utilizing a waste syringe attached to the IV line, nurses can avoid detaching and reattaching syringes to collect and give back the patient's blood. Patients who are already at an increased risk …

The relationship between a teacher and student can be an important part of student success, especially for students of higher education. One factor that may influence student outcomes is the level of empathy a teacher may demonstrate toward a student. Empathy is an important part of interpersonal relationships as it promotes a feeling or understanding of another’s emotions through taking on a different perspective. Empathy can also produce a response leading to altruistic behavior. According to some theoretical models the prosocial characteristic of empathy contributes to the social emotional competence (SEC) of a teacher or instructor. The higher the SEC …
