Global Implications Of Covid-19 On Education And Research In Healthcare And Stem: Analysis Of Case Studies, Yumna Indorewala, Santanu De

FDLA Journal

The zoonotic novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 posed major threats to the world’s economy, social development, and public health. Education and research in STEM and healthcare were no exceptions to the global implications of the Coronavirus Infectious Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Social distancing guidelines were initially recommended to refrain from in-person operations for preventing the transmission of the virus. As academic organizations implemented multifarious methods to effectively transition to remote/online or hybrid educational formats, COVID-19 necessitated designing, adopting, as well as evaluating the efficacy of new instructional approaches, especially for disciplines that require active, experiential learning such as healthcare and STEM. These …

Compassionate Practice: A Review And Framework For Integrating Medical Humanities Into Pre-Medical And Medical Curricula, Megan Mccoy

University Honors Theses

The article presents the findings of a comprehensive narrative literature review aimed at addressing the question: What are the current frameworks of the medical humanities discipline in terms of purpose, methodology, curriculum, and student learning outcomes? Thematic analysis and qualitative coding highlighted key themes and areas of concern, including the purpose of medical humanities, methodology, current curriculum, and student outcomes. Recommendations are provided to address disagreements within the discipline, proposing a conceptual framework and definition for medical humanities, alongside advocating for a mixed-method approach as the primary methodology. Curriculum guidelines emphasize the importance of a quality integrated curriculum focusing on …

Letter To The Editor: Cheaters Never Prosper...Or Do They?, Samantha M. Lavertue, Richard Terry

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery

The following article is a perspectives piece regarding the newly discovered USMLE cheating rings taking place in Nepal, India, Pakistan, Jordan, and Japan. As this situation escalates, we call for action to find a solution to a widespread problem: eliminate the need for cheating by making licensure exams pass/fail. Score frenzy is out of control, and it has created a problem for graduate medical education as it applies to both applicants and programs. Here we address this problem and provide a solution that encourages readers to consider how we can create a system of resident selection that focuses not on …

Why Do Osteopathic Medical Students Take The Usmle Step 1?, Constantino G. Lambroussis, John Weston, Richard R. Terry, Jennifer Spencer Jun 2024

Why Do Osteopathic Medical Students Take The Usmle Step 1?, Constantino G. Lambroussis, John Weston, Richard R. Terry, Jennifer Spencer

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery

In 2022, 4722 osteopathic medical students chose to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 (USMLE Step 1) in addition to the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination Level 1 (COMLEX Level 1). Both of these examinations are currently pass/fail assessments to demonstrate clinical knowledge competency. Osteopathic medical students are only required to take the COMLEX series of examinations for graduation from an osteopathic medical school while allopathic medical students are only required to take the USMLE Step series of examinations instead. Correlation between these examinations exists, and information from multiple entities has been for the COMLEX and the …

Reimagining Health: Calling For Reform Of The Canadian Healthcare System Through Afrofuturism And Speculative Design, Diane Oyedeji Ms, Stephanie J. Kiggundu Ms

Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections

This exploratory essay addresses the health inequalities currently affecting the African/Black diaspora in Canada and proposes a healthcare system reform to address the inequalities. Despite the Canadian healthcare system’s goals of being universal and accessible, there are disparities in African/Black patient representation. This essay proposes a healthcare system reform through incorporating African/Black patient input through the implementation of collaborative design through the lens of Afrofuturism and its values such as inclusivity and empowerment. The goal is to implement a Canadian healthcare system that is equitable, and patient-centered through emphasizing African/Black voices in technological design, clinical practices, and promoting a more …

Prenatal Maternal Depression In Canada: Are Current Protocols Adequate?, Britney A. Glasgow-Osment, Farah Wahib, Madeleine Zanin, Shama Kassam

Master's in Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences Graduate Program

Throughout pregnancy, maternal and fetal health are influenced by a multitude of factors. Prenatal maternal depression is one such factor. It is well documented that prenatal maternal depression causes negative pregnancy outcomes for both the mother and baby, including irregular placental function, psychological distress, and pre-term birth, among others. In Ontario, the incidence of prenatal maternal depression is alarmingly high, at 10.3%.As such, the current tools for managing prenatal maternal depression must be effective, efficient, and comprehensive. We hypothesized that the current protocols for screening and treating prenatal maternal depression in Canada are inadequate. To investigate this, a literature review …
