Computed tomography (CT) imaging has become a cornerstone of modern medical diagnostics, thanks to the groundbreaking work of Sir Godfrey Hounsfield. However, the significant role played by his employer, Electric and Musical Industries (EMI), in providing financial support for his research is often overlooked. In this paper, we explore the connection between EMI's success in the music industry, particularly its signing of the Beatles, and Hounsfield's pioneering work on CT imaging. EMI’s success in the music industry provided the financial stability for Hounsfield's research endeavors. In 1971, he developed the first CT scanner, which revolutionized diagnostic medicine. The interprofessional education (IPE) literature showcases many studies reporting results at the all-student and academic program levels. However, if the purpose of IPE is to develop collaborative-practice ready professionals, analysis at the team level would better support the advancement of the IPE literature and future health care goals. Pre-licensure students engaged in a two-year IPE curriculum and individually completed the Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education-Revised survey, version 2 (SPICE-R2), at the end of the first and second year. Exposure to cross-cultural medical education is essential for professionals aiming to work in global health or serve diverse communities. However, traditional in-person exchange programs can be complex, costly, and restricted, particularly during times when travel is limited, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic. These challenges prompted us to explore novel approaches to support cross-cultural exchange programs. We designed, piloted, and evaluated a cross-cultural virtual exchange experience using case-based learning (CBL). Despite the increased emphasis on simulation-based interprofessional education (Sim-IPE) over the last 2 decades, surgical teamwork continues to suffer from ineffective dynamics requiring educational interventions to help improve it. This paper will provide an overview of the status of interprofessional simulation education in surgery by addressing the following topics: (1) team dynamics in surgery, (2) key concepts related to IPE and its benefits, and (3) salient examples of Sim-IPE in surgery with implementation tips.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonopoly is an innovative active-learning medical board game addressses core pulmonary concepts in an engaging, competitive style. The strength of Pulmonopoly lies in its ability to combine ease of setup and play with comprehensive content coverage that comprises a significant proportion of national board examinations, offering a gamification experience that can be readily applied in different settings and modified for learner levels.

Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy: A Case Of The Broken Heart, Lilian Huynh, Kaylee Putney

Annual Research Symposium

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC), or "broken heart syndrome," is a rare cardiac condition causing temporary left ventricular dysfunction due to severe stress. Though the exact cause is unclear, it mimics myocardial infarction and can lead to cardiogenic shock. Current treatment lacks specific guidelines and relies on heart failure protocols. We report a case of a patient with TC-induced cardiogenic shock, likely triggered by emotional stress. She required vasopressors, a percutaneous intervention, an Impella device, and guideline-directed medication therapies. This case underscores the significance of establishing guideline optimizations for managing TC and cardiogenic shock.

CASE HISTORY: 26-year-old Caucasian male. Primary medical history includes spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, otherwise negative health history. Presented to human performance laboratory for case study of pre- and post-exercise training cardiorespiratory fitness testing. PHYSICAL EXAM: Patient examination indicated bilateral upper and lower limb contractures, and bilateral upper and lower limb spasticity. Hyperlordosis was also noted. PURPOSE: Determine whether T-cell mitochondria differ in women and men categorized by cardiorespiratory fitness and percent body fat. METHODS: 9 women (age: (mean ± standard deviation) 29.2 ± 6.8 years) and 17 men (age: 28.0 ± 6.3 years) visited our laboratory for a body fat scan, donate blood sample and complete a VO2max test. For the VO2max test, participants were fitted with a heart rate monitor and a mask for breath analysis with a metabolic cart. CLINICAL PRESENTATION & EXAM: A patient with Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) will often present symptoms of low energy availability (LEA), reduction in body weight (BW), fat mass (FM), and resting heart rate (RHR). In addition, there is disruption with gastrointestinal (GI) function and the menstrual cycle. RED-S symptoms typically start as LEA, then progress into decreased nutrient intake which can lead into the symptoms listed previously.
