Background: Accuracy in death certification is crucial for effective public health initiatives. Inaccuracies in unsuitable Underlying Cause-of-Death (UCOD) statements can distort mortality statistics, influence health policy, and impact resource allocation. In South Carolina, changes in the death registration process and the introduction of an unsuitable cause-of-death list highlighted an urgent need for structured training among certifiers to enhance accuracy in death documentation.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to implement a standardized training program for healthcare providers certifying natural causes of death and assessing the impact of reducing the unsuitable underlying cause-of-death inaccuracies in an outpatient hospice setting.

Increasing Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates For Patients Without Insurance, Andrea F. Day

Background: Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States (U.S.), ranking as second most prevalent overall. Despite many initiatives, screening rates remain low, especially among clinic patients without insurance. The lack of an evidence-based screening protocol exacerbates these issues and increases the risk of advanced cancer and death. Initial data showed that 0% of patients were screened according to recommended guidelines.

Purpose: The project implemented a standard screening protocol to increase colorectal cancer screening rates in a rural Alabama free clinic for patients ages 45-64 lacking insurance.

Organizational Policies, Practices and Procedures Intended/Target Audience Seasoned Faculty and Staff Mid-Career Faculty and Staff New Faculty and Staff Description Faculty have limited time for professional development. We piloted an approach to create and actively promote curated asynchronous professional development resources in five targeted topic areas and recorded resource use over two academic years (July 2023-July 2025). Since July 2023, we had 4,543 unique daily views; more than half (n=2,319) were views of academic promotion resources. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Barriers to performing family medicine research include funding, infrastructure, and mentorship shortages. The Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance (CERA) was created in 2011 to address these issues. This study explores the scope and impact of CERA-related publications in family medicine.

METHODS: We performed a descriptive bibliometric study of CERA-related publications from 2011 to 2023. Articles were sourced from Medline (PubMed), SCOPUS, and the CERA website. Data analysis focused on publication type, authors, CERA survey type, and citation rates.

This letter, signed by over 50 academic chairs of emergency medicine, urges the ACGME to reconsider a proposed mandate requiring all emergency medicine residency programs to adopt a four-year training model. The authors argue that current three-year programs are supported by data demonstrating equivalent educational and clinical outcomes compared to four-year formats. They criticize the flawed survey methodology underpinning the proposal, note the loss of milestone-based training flexibility, and highlight the lack of added scholarly or clinical value in the fourth year.
