The records of the Cabell County Medical Society (CCMS) span the years of 1891 to 1972 and primarily comprise of correspondence relating to various organizational and professional aspects of the society. This includes meeting notes, memoranda, professional journals, pamphlets, constitutions, and by-laws. The collection also contains the Dr. Charles H. Moffat’s (former professor of history at Marshall University) research materials concerning his book "A History of the Cabell County Medical Society in West Virginia, 1890-1985."

Introducing The Living With Illness Group: A Specialized Treatment For Patients With Chronic Schizophrenic Conditions, Thomas G. Plante, Stephanie L. Pinder, David Howe

Psychology

This paper introduces a specialized psychotherapy/psychoeducational group treatment for patients with chronic psychotic symptoms who receive only partial benefit from psychotropic medications, psychotherapy, and milieu/activities therapy. The goal of the group is to assist patients to accurately identify the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that are dysfunctional symptoms of their disability and then use the functional aspects of their brain as well as learned coping strategies to compensate for their disability. The group format, philosophy, procedures, and typical topics of discussion are detailed.

Survey Of Attitudes Of Licensed Dental Hygienists Toward Continuing Education In A State With Mandatory Continuing Education Versus A State Without Mandatory Continuing Education, Katharine Reeves Behroozi

The purpose of this research was to compare attitudes of licensed dental hygienists toward continuing education (CE) in two states: Kentucky, a state with mandatory continuing education (MCE) as a requirement for dental hygiene re-licensure and Virginia, a state without MCE for dental hygiene re-licensure. A self-designed, 28-item instrument, Continuing Education Attitudinal Questionnaire, was mailed to a stratified and random sample of 400 licensed dental hygienists in Kentucky and Virginia. Employing the chi-square test for independence, analysis of results revealed that Kentucky participants responded more affirmatively than Virginia participants to attitudinal statements regarding CE, particularly in areas of MCE, benefits …

A primary dimension of nursing is caring tor patients who suffer. This study examined the inferences made about patients' suffering oy 65 registered nurses employed in acute care health facilities. Utilizing The standard Measure of Inferences of Suffering Questionnaire. the purpose of the study was to explore the influence of nursing education and experience on the degree of pain and psychological distress inferred by the nurses. Analysis of Covariance was used to test for group differences on the basis of nursing education when number of months of nursing experience was controlled. In vitro studies suggest that neonates and adults may have different cardiac chronotropic responses to a-adrenergic stimulation. To investigate these differences in vivo, three groups of dogs were studied. Group I = 12 puppies, ages 3-7 days; group II = 12 puppies ages 8-15 days, and group III = seven adult dogs. Heart rate and blood pressure determinations were made in the control setting and then after combined β-adrenergic and parasympathetic blockade (propranolol 0.6 mg/kg and bilateral vagotomies). Alpha-stimulation was then achieved with phenylephrine given in doses of 0.5, 1.0, and 10.0 μg/kg/ min. A second, high dose of propranolol …

Previous studies have suggested that the atrioventricular nodal functional refractory period in the neonate is equal to or shorter than that of the ventricle, providing little or no protection to the ventricle against rapid atrial rates and allowing closely coupled atrial beats to fall within the ventricular vulnerable period. We evalu­ated atrioventricular node function in 21 mongrel neonatal puppies, 3-15 days old, and 15 adult dogs utilizing intracardiac His bundle recording and stimulation techniques. The mean atrioventricular nodal functional refractory period (173.1 ± 20.0 ms) exceeded both the ventricular effective refractory period (139.5 ± 14.3) and ventricular functional refractory period …

Despite its lack of public acclaim until the 1970s, the Medical College of Virginia provided remarkable medical care since its founding in 1837. With the aim to recognize MCV’s history and progress, this book chronicles the college’s first 150 years. Details of MCV’s development are discussed in context of major historical events including World Wars I and II, the 1918 influenza outbreak, and technological advancements.
