Eating Disorders In The Oral Health Curriculum, Rita D. Debate, Deanne Shuman, Lisa A. Tedesco

Due to the oral/systemic nature of eating disorders, this serious health issue requires comprehensive patient assessment and coordinated health treatment. The purpose of this study was to assess the breadth and depth of eating disorder and comprehensive care within the dental and dental hygiene curriculum. Survey data were collected from deans of U.S. dental programs (n=24) and dental hygiene program directors (n=94). Statistically significant differences were observed between dental programs (DP) and dental hygiene programs (DHP) as more DHP reported including anorexia nervosa (p<.001), bulimia nervosa (p<.001), and oral manifestations of eating disorders (p=.003) within their curricula. Clock hours dedicated to these topics ranged from seventeen to thirty-five minutes, with no statistically significant differences observed between DP and DHP. Only 58 percent of DP and 56 percent of DHP included patient communication skills specific to eating disorders. Moreover, DHP were observed dedicating more instruction time for this skill (p=.011). As greater emphasis is placed on oral/systemic health and the provision of comprehensive care, many oral health professionals may not be adequately trained to identify, provide education, and communicate with patients regarding the oral/systemic nature of eating disorders. The findings from this study indicate that there is a need for appropriate training to better prepare oral health professionals for comprehensive patient care.

Purpose. To assess the feelings of physicians about assisting female victims of intimate-partner violence (IPV), and to examine factors related to positive and negative feelings about assisting victims of IPV.

Method. In 1998, a total site sample of 150 physicians practicing in a large general hospital in the area of Virginia Beach, Virginia, was surveyed by questionnaire via the mail. Four specialties were represented: emergency medicine, family practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and psychiatry. Mapping And Ablation Of Complex Cardiac Arrhythmia Guided By A Novel Three Dimensional Non-Contact Endocardial Activation Mapping System, Wing-Hong Fung, Chi-Kin Chan, Kam-Sang Woo, Wilson Wai-Man Chan

Conventional cardiac activation mapping requires a sequentially-based method of positioning a catheter in contact with the endocardium to generate intracardiac electrograms at single points during sustained arrhythmia. Significant limitation of such point by point mapping may be encountered when applying to complex arrhythmia e.g. non-sustained arrhythmia or haemodynamically unstable arrhythmia. A novel non-contact mapping system (Ensite 3000 system) providing a three-dimensional simultaneous display of arrhythmia activation may offer a solution. The Use Of Wallstent And Smart Stents Incarotid Stent-Supported Angioplasty, Steven Siu-Lung Li

In the endovascular approach of carotid stenosis treatment, stent-supported angioplasty is current state-of-the-art technique. Self-expandable stents are preferable to balloon-expandable stents due to the potential risk of deformation of the latter by external pressure. Wallstents and SMART stents are the more commonly used self-expandable stents. They appear to be of similar efficacy and safety but due to their different characteristics, their applications may be different according to different lesion characteristics.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is a familial form of cardiomyopathy predominantly affecting the right ventricle but may progress to involve the left ventricle as well. At the late stage of the disease, it is sometimes difficult to differentiate with other forms of dilated cardiomyopathy. In most affected families, the mode of inheritance of the disease is autosomal dominant. Lately, the gene accounting for the autosomal recessive form of ARVC, which was associated with palmoplantar keratosis, was identified. ARVC can present with sudden cardiac death without any preceding symptoms in the young population. Therefore, ARVC must be included in the …

To achieve success in the new and complex world of integrated health care delivery networks, aspiring executives are encouraged to develop a broad base of knowledge and experience that capitalizes on their unique skills, talents, and interests, rather than pursuing a narrowly defined linear career ladder. The importance of management team competency and selection of educational preparation are highlighted in the context of examples of advanced management competency development.

Thrombolytic Therapy For Acute Myocardial Infarction In The Elderly, Bernard Bun-Lap Wong, Wai-Hong Chen

Acute myocardial infarction (MI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. Patients ≥75 years constitute up to 30% of the acute MI population and are associated with a 50% in-hospital mortality. Thrombolytic therapy was shown in a metaanalysis of 9 largest randomized controlled trials to reduce 35-day mortality. However, the benefit was observed mainly among patients < 75 years old. For patients ≥ 75 years, the 35-day mortality was 24.3% in those treated with thrombolytic therapy and 25.3% in the placebo group, a difference not reaching statistical significance.

Background: Limited data are available on physicians’ accuracy in coding for their services. The purpose of this study was to determine the current procedural terminology (CPT) evaluation and management coding accuracy of family physicians and define demographic variables associated with coding accuracy.

Methods: Six hundred randomly selected active members of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians were sent six hypothetical progress notes of office visits along with a demographic survey. The study group assigned CPT evaluation and management codes to each of the progress notes and completed the demographic survey. Five expert coders also assigned codes to each of the …

Among the challenges faced by physical therapy educators is to determine whether students have made sufficient progress in the academic and/or clinical curriculum to merit continuance in the physical therapy program. At times, faculties must make the decision to dismiss a student due to failure to achieve the necessary performance criteria. These decisions are often clouded by fear of lawsuits and confusion about the responsibilities and prerogatives of professional judgments. This article traces the history of case law related to academic dismissal, examining a number of significant cases and the ramifications of these cases for professional programs.
