Visual Journaling: An Intervention To Influence Stress, Anxiety And Affect Levels In Medical Students, Amanda Patton

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

Research has shown that medical students suffer from higher levels of stress and anxiety than the general population, increasing their risk of health problems, mental illness and suicide. This study looked at the effects of visual journaling as a possible stress reduction technique. Visual journaling combines written journaling, which has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, and artmaking, which has been shown to improve mood. Five students and five staff members attending or working at Eastern Virginia Medical School participated in the research. Learning On Line Using Wiki Technology: A Pilot Study In A Pediatric Clerkship, Anthony J. Frisby, J Lindsey Lane

The Selected Works of Anthony J. Frisby, PhD

Methods Students on the Pediatric Clerkship at Jefferson Medical College research case-vignettes in 20 topic areas and discuss their answers in small group with a faculty facilitator to achieve the learning objectives. Using the Blackboard course management system and Learning Objects TeamsLx software one topic area, with 10 case vignettes, was transferred to on line learning and piloted by 14 students divided into 5 groups. Instructions for use of the WIKI communication forum were provided on-line. Each group was assigned 2 case-vignettes. Outcomes data was obtained from questionnaires and student interviews.

Results: No student had prior experience with online learning. …

With the increasing role played by ultrasound in clinical diagnostics, ultrasound training in medical education has become more and more important. The clinical routine for ultrasound training is on real patients; therefore monitored and guided examinations involving medical students are quite time-constrained. Furthermore, standardized patients (SPs), who are increasingly used in medical school for teaching and assessing medical students, need to be augmented. These SPs are typically healthy individuals who can not accurately portray the variety of abnormalities that are needed for training especially when medical examinations involve instrument interactions. Simulation-Based Training For Patient Safety: 10 Principles That Matter, Eduardo Salas, Katherine A. Wilson, Elizabeth Lazzara, Heidi B. King, Jeffery S. Augenstein

Publications

Simulation-based training can improve patient care when factors influencing its design, delivery, evaluation, and transfer are taken into consideration. In this paper, we provide a number of principles and practical tips that organizations in health care can use to begin implementing effective simulation-based training as a way to enhance patient safety. We commend the health care community for their efforts thus far. We hope that the information provided in this paper will encourage thinking beyond the "bells and whistles" of the simulation and bring to light full potential of simulation-based training in health care and patient safety.

Through support from the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Health Professions, Division of Nursing, the Jefferson School of Nursing (JSN) has expanded its Adult, Family and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner programs, currently offered at the urban Center City Campus, to the rural Danville Campus. In addition, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is offered at both sites. Expansion of the program has increased the clinical learning experience sites for enrollees and the number and distribution (race/ethnicity, age, gender) of master's and doctoral prepared nurses employed and practicing in rural and underserved areas. …
