The Impacts Of Change In Governance On Faculty And Staff At Higher Education Institutions: A Case Study Of Ohsu, Dana L. Director

In the early 1990s, Oregon Health and Science University leadership examined the political and economic landscape and determined it needed a new operational model to survive and thrive. In 1995 OHSU separated from the state higher education system and became a public corporation, with goals of increased efficiency, customer-focus, ability to attract world-class researchers and physicians, and salaries commensurate with an urban academic health center.

This research examines the internal impacts when universities undergo significant change, using OHSU's governance change as a case study. Central is the question: what effect(s) did OHSU's decision to become a unique public corporation have …

BACKGROUND: As a controversial topic in American society, abortion occupies a precarious place in medical school curricula. Although medical students believe abortion is a valid and acceptable topic, fewer than 20% of U.S. medical schools offer formal abortion education in either the pre-clinical or clinical years. Only 40% provide abortion lectures during clerkships. According to the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, student learning objectives, abortion education should be included at a minimum in the third year core clerkship. This is a systematic review of the research data between 1995 and June 2013 concerning faculty development in the use of high-fidelity patient simulation for health professionals and students with a search of the following databases: CINAHL, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: Comprehensive, OVID Medline, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest Dissertation/Theses Database. The primary search terms were high-fidelity patient simulation and faculty development. Reference lists from relevant articles were also reviewed. Twenty-five studies were included for this review. The majority of the studies were surveys with a few quasi-experimental designs. The themes were similar to those found in the …

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for bifurcation lesions (BLs) is considered high risk due to increased procedural adverse events when compared to non-bifurcation lesion. Dedicated bifurcation stents, specifically designed to allow minimally traumatic implantation in the main vessel and/or side branch while providing adequate scaffolding of the side branch ostium may offer an advantage over utilization of conventional stents. Coronary perforation as a complication of PCI is a rare but potentially lethal complication that is associated with a high rate of morbidity. Purpose: To assess the palliative care (PC) knowledge of junior and senior level bachelors of science nursing (BSN) students and to compare the PC knowledge between these two groups of students.

Design: A non-experimental quantitative, cross-sectional, survey design was used.

Methods: Seventy two students from a junior level and a senior level BSN course were recruited at a southeastern United States university. The participants completed the demographic form and the Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing (PCQN). Data collection took place from September 2013 to October 2013.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if the baccalaureate degree student nurse’s clinical experience in labor and deliver affects his or her knowledge of labor and delivery nursing care.

Design: A descriptive, non-experimental pre-test post-test design.

Method: A convenience sample of 45 baccalaureate student nurses enrolled in the parent/ child class at a large southeastern university. Data collection took place from August 2013 to October 2013.

Results: The mean difference between pre-test score and post-test score demonstrated minimal gain in knowledge during the clinical rotation in labor and delivery. The number of hours …

There is a severe shortage of rural physicians in America. One reason physicians choose not to practice, or persist in practice, in rural areas is due to a lack of professional community, i.e., community of practice (CoP). Online, "virtual" CoPs, enabled by now common Internet communication technology can help give rural physicians the CoP experience they traditionally have lacked, despite their remote practice locations. Therefore, it is important for rural medical education programs to provide technological experiences that give students the skills needed to create virtual CoPs in future rural practice contexts.
