Sex, Milk, And Cookies: Tackling Sexual Health Promotion On A Catholic College Campus, Mary Franz Apr 2016

Sex, Milk, And Cookies: Tackling Sexual Health Promotion On A Catholic College Campus, Mary Franz

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

A great divide exists among parents, policy makers, educational institutions, and the public at large regarding how to prevent the negative consequences of sexual activity among young adults. Some educators believe that sex education programs should promote abstinence as the best behavioral goal for students; however, a more intense debate surrounds whether this should be the only message that adolescents receive about sex or just one element of a more comprehensive view of sexuality and informed sex choices. Catholic colleges face a particularly difficult challenge in deciding what information to provide to students and more significantly, which topics to avoid …

Tools And Methods For Zika Prevention In Cachoeira, Bahia, Florence Tesha

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Zika virus, which is mainly transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, has become a major health threat in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Brazil is the country that is being most impacted with zika virus in addition to the existing mosquito-borne diseases of dengue and chikungunya. With the increase in zika virus infections, there have also been increasing numbers of infant brain abnormalities such as microcephaly associated to zika. International and local health institutions are working together to control and prevent zika transmission. This project aimed to investigate the various tools and methods employed by the Center …

Effective Interventions To Reduce The Increase In Elective Cesarean Sections In Low Risk Women, Kimberly Kelsey, Crystal Hunter, Brianna-Kirsten Tan, Sara Shea, Heather Holland, Sasha Riley, Mary Uy, Tenzin Tsomo, Fasha Ruys-Solorzano, Dolma Tso

Student Research Posters

According to the Annals of Family Medicine, the amount of babies born via cesarean section has increased from 4.5% in 1965 to 26.1% in 2002 and nearly 40% of all cesarean sections are repeats. After an extensive literature review, results showed that patients need to be educated about the risks and benefits of vaginal delivery and cesarean delivery. It was also found that there needs to be policy changes to decrease the amount of cesarean sections done and increase the labor and delivery support without using interventions. Further study should be focused on morbidity and mortality very low birth weight …

Pediatric resident trauma education is suboptimal due to lack of a curriculum and limited trauma experience and education resources. The objective of the study was to test knowledge retention and acceptability of interactive spaced education (ISE) in pediatric trauma. Prospective, randomized trial involving 40 physicians in a pediatric emergency department was used. Instrument was comprised of 48 multiple-choice questions (evaluative component) and answer critiques (educational component) on pediatric trauma divided into two modules. The instrument was assessed for test–retest reliability, item difficulty, and construct validity. Intervention consisted of online administration of each module as eight spaced emails (3 questions each) …

New Journals For Publishing Medical Case Reports, Katherine G. Akers Phd Apr 2016

New Journals For Publishing Medical Case Reports, Katherine G. Akers Phd

Library Scholarly Publications

Because they do not rank highly in the hierarchy of evidence and are not frequently cited, case reports describing the clinical circumstances of single patients are seldom published by medical journals. However, many clinicians argue that case reports have significant educational value, advance medical knowledge, and complement evidence-based medicine. Over the last several years, a vast number (~160) of new peer-reviewed journals have emerged that focus on publishing case reports. These journals are typically open access and have relatively high acceptance rates. However, approximately half of the publishers of case reports journals engage in questionable or "predatory" publishing practices. Authors …

Experiences Of Registered Nurses Who Were Not Initially Successful On The Nclex-Rn, Then Subsequently Passed, Tammy L. Kasprovich Apr 2016

Experiences Of Registered Nurses Who Were Not Initially Successful On The Nclex-Rn, Then Subsequently Passed, Tammy L. Kasprovich

Dissertations (1934 -)

In the past decade, there has been little research conducted regarding individuals’ stories about not initially being successful on the nursing licensure examination (NCLEX-RN). An unsuccessful licensure examination attempt may affect the individual personally and profoundly in ways that could influence their future success. Learning from registered nurses’ experiences may contribute to developing new strategies to promote graduate nurses’ initial success, which could help alleviate the nursing shortage. The purpose of this research study was to explore, using a narrative method, the experiences of registered nurses who were not initially successful the NCLEX-RN, then subsequently passed. Personal Construct Theory (PCT) …

Racially And Ethnically Underrepresented Students’ Completion Of Rn Bsn Program: Factors Affecting Success, Patricia Ann Varga Apr 2016

Racially And Ethnically Underrepresented Students’ Completion Of Rn Bsn Program: Factors Affecting Success, Patricia Ann Varga

Dissertations (1934 -)

Health care is becoming increasingly complex. This complexity requires the skills of a BSN or higher prepared nurse. The current nursing workforce does not mirror the population demographics of the United States. Because of this, underrepresented racial and ethnic groups are not likely to be cared for by a member of their diverse group. Satisfaction with care and outcomes of care are enhanced when members of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups are cared for by a member of their cultural group. This grounded theory study included 6 RN BSN students who were members of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and …

A Phenomenological Approach To Understand The Challenges Faced By Medical Students, R. Deepa, Anuja S. Panicker Mar 2016

A Phenomenological Approach To Understand The Challenges Faced By Medical Students, R. Deepa, Anuja S. Panicker

The Qualitative Report

Life in a medical school is more challenging, when compared to other disciplines like arts and engineering. The innate nature of the medical curriculum and the demands of the profession have created extensive pressure on its students, leading to the prevalence of high stress levels and stress related disorders in them. The mental health of future doctors is very important for quality patient care. Hence it is high time for medical institutions to design interventions to mitigate this situation. A significant amount of research has gone into identifying the predominant stressors of medical education and the prevailing stress levels amongst …

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Introduction: Routine screening of adolescents for depression and suicide risk is now considered best clinical practice. However, due to a lack of training, many physicians do not engage in screening. The goal of this curriculum is to improve learner knowledge of and comfort in adolescent depression and suicide risk assessment and management. Methods: The didactic session typically takes 60-90 minutes to complete. In addition to a teaching PowerPoint that provides instruction in both the assessment and management of adolescent depression and suicide risk, the curriculum also includes a suicide assessment and management protocol. This protocol outlines an algorithm that assists …
