Academic Success In Medical School For Prematriculation Program Students—A Retrospective Analysis Of Year 1 Course Exams At Boonshoft School Of Medicine At Wright State University, James E. Elliott
Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
As medical schools are striving to enroll the most diverse candidates to their schools, the medical schools have developed enriching prematriculation programs to their diverse candidates to ensure that all students are prepared for the first year of medical school. The prematriculation programs attempt to build in academic content with study techniques to help students become confident in their learning in the first weeks of school but also in the last months of their first year when they can still employ various study tools learned in the summer from the prematriculation program. However, with the implementation of these programs, there …

Reproductive Health Needs In Individuals With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Emily Bo Lafountaine
Reproductive Health Needs In Individuals With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Emily Bo Lafountaine
Theses and Graduate Projects
Currently, 11.8 million individuals live with a cognitive impairment or are diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD) in the United States with approximately 820,000 women with IDD of reproductive age. Before the 1970s, this population had been largely institutionalized, facing stigmatization and unethical contraceptive methods including poor sexual and reproductive education, barriers to healthcare, and involuntary sterilization. Living in state-funded institutions, private institutions, or with relatives or caregivers, this population is continuing to be integrated into communities with increasing societal recognition regarding their human rights, including sexual and reproductive health4. With their integration into communities and education systems, …
Pick’S Disease And Subdural Haematoma: A Diagnostic Red Herring, Philip Adebayo, Funmilola Taiwo, Fatma Bakshi, Sunham Nur
Pick’S Disease And Subdural Haematoma: A Diagnostic Red Herring, Philip Adebayo, Funmilola Taiwo, Fatma Bakshi, Sunham Nur
Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), otherwise known as Pick’s disease, is a clinically heterogeneous group of sporadic and familial neurodegenerative diseases. These conditions are characterized by dementia, behavioural and language dysfunction and loss of executive skills resulting from the degeneration of the frontal and temporal lobes. Although reversible causes of dementia are always sought during the evaluation of patients with progressive cognitive decline, the occurrence of a reversible aetiology may distract from evaluating for neurodegenerative causes of dementia. This report is about a 66-year old man with features of FTD and superimposed chronic subdural haematoma.
De-Stigmatizing Mental Illness Through Graphic Medicine, Megumi Tsuda
De-Stigmatizing Mental Illness Through Graphic Medicine, Megumi Tsuda
Phase 1
Graphic medicine - or the communication of health-related narratives through images and texts, such as comics - has been increasingly recognized as a powerful educational tool. My project investigates the value of integrating graphic medicine to medical education, specifically to improve mental health literacy and de-stigmatize mental illness. As a medical student, I have encountered several instances where fellow medical students and even doctors casually throw around diagnostic terminology, especially those used to describe mental health disorders, in a colloquial and insensitive manner that seem to indicate that they do not take mental illness seriously, or even ignorant of what …
Heart To Heart: Educating Allied Healthcare Students And Professionals About Heart Failure, Samantha M. Barefoot
Heart To Heart: Educating Allied Healthcare Students And Professionals About Heart Failure, Samantha M. Barefoot
Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects
Heart failure (HF) is a health problem which providing necessary education to healthcare professionals who serve individuals with HF allows for continuity of care and the promotion of disease management for this population. The intent of this research was to determine if providing an educational in-service to allied healthcare students and practitioners increased their knowledge of OT’s role with HF clients and about HF itself as a condition interfering with occupation. The design of this study involved collecting pre/post survey data to evaluate the knowledge of the participants about the HF population and gathering participant satisfaction data regarding the in-service. …
