Patient Education On Sweetened Beverages: An Interactive And Module-Based Approach, Matt Tsai
Patient Education On Sweetened Beverages: An Interactive And Module-Based Approach, Matt Tsai
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
As sugary beverages continue to contribute to negative health outcomes, there remains a need for efficient, effective patient education in this area. A custom, interactive and reflective web-based module on sugary beverages for adult participants (n=42) was introduced at a rural Vermont outpatient clinic. Built-in quizzes evaluated learning through a pre and post-intervention design. On average, participants improved significantly from a pre-module mean score of 3.00 to a post-module score of 4.33 (p<0.0001). Additionally, participants' average rating of the module's effectiveness was 8.3 out of 10. A module-based approach may be one efficacious solution to improve patient education on sugary beverage consumption.

Most patients are willing to have advanced care planning (ACP) discussions with their medical team, even if they may be young and healthy. Yet, time constraints, perceived stigma of conversations surrounding death, and the educational requirement of documentation are known barriers for care providers to have these discussions. Identifying a health care agent (HCA) can be an important first step to continued ACP in the primary care setting. The purpose of this project is to propose a systemic approach to having HCA discussions in a time-efficient manner that can be easily implemented as part of a routine medical interview.

There is no real-time tracking of influenza or influenza vaccination in the United States. This project is to prototype and grow a real-time flu and flu vaccination tracking system for the state of the Vermont. This will help providers be more aware of the vaccination status of their patients and will allow for important real-time analysis of a burgeoning epidemic was it to occur.

Emergency Medical Services In Hinesburg, Vt, William Tyler Prince
Emergency Medical Services In Hinesburg, Vt, William Tyler Prince
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Ambulance transport in Hinesburg, VT is currently provided by a service over 20 minutes away and will cease in June 2020. Town officials are currently trying to decide whether to expand local first response to include ambulance transport or to contract with Richmond Rescue, which is a well-established 911 transport service in a nearby town. Through literature/budget reviews and interviews with involved community members, it is apparent that although an independent Hinesburg EMS may have shorter response times, its volunteer corps is insufficient to sustain a transport service. Richmond Rescue can provide a higher level of medical care at a …

Caregiver Burnout, Elizabeth Anne Lynch
Caregiver Burnout, Elizabeth Anne Lynch
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Caring for someone with advanced health care needs, dementia, or a difficult diagnosis can take a mental, physical and financial toll on the caregiver. It is important for providers to recognize, address and assist caregivers in as many ways as possible. Providing physicians with a readily available patient-education template in Epic may improve outreach and communication with increasingly isolated patients and caregivers and improve care for all without burdening physicians more.
Tobacco Cessation Support In New Milford, Ct, Laura R. Nelson
Tobacco Cessation Support In New Milford, Ct, Laura R. Nelson
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Smoking tobacco is one of the most significant risk factors for several deadly diseases; nevertheless, roughly 13% of Connecticut residents smoke cigarettes. Most people who smoke cigarettes realize that it is bad for their health, but many don't understand why it is unhealthy, or just how unhealthy it truly is. Furthermore, quitting smoking is often extraordinarily difficult, due to the addictive nature of nicotine, and the increasing content of nicotine inside cigarettes over time. This project created supportive and educational pamphlets about tobacco use and cessation, and proposes that primary care doctors can help their patients quit smoking by providing …

Reducing Benzodiazepine Use For The Treatment Of Insomnia And Supporting Nonpharmacological Therapies, Unchan Pyon
Reducing Benzodiazepine Use For The Treatment Of Insomnia And Supporting Nonpharmacological Therapies, Unchan Pyon
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Most medical organizations recommend against the use of benzodiazepine use for the treatment of insomnia, especially in the elderly. However, the percentage of the adult population on benzos increase with age: 7.5% in adults ages 51-64; 9% in adults over 65. Alternative therapies for insomnia, including online CBT, require more commitment than taking a medication so many patients opt for medication. This project aims to increase awareness of benzodiazepine use for insomnia and provide support for nonpharmacological therapies.

Elbow Injury Prevention In Youth Dominican Baseball Players: A Training Intervention Pilot Study, Chelsey Erbaugh Franz, Dawn Hall-Bibb, Myra Stockdale, Aliya Thompson, Bailey Biggs
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Background: Research suggests deficits in shoulder and elbow strength and flexibility may explain the role of elbow injuries in overhead athletes, specifically ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury in baseball players. Significant damage to this ligament typically requires operative care for continued activity in the sport. Several studies have demonstrated the success of rehabilitation programs post-surgery; however, few studies have examined the role of UCL injury prevention programs. A recognized upper extremity (UE) injury prevention method is the Thrower’s Ten Program. This program may create elbow stability when pitching and throwing, theoretically reducing the risk of UCL injury. Purpose: The purpose …

Chapter: “Health Law And Ethics”, Allison K. Hoffman, I. Glenn Cohen, William M. Sage
All Faculty Scholarship
Law and ethics are both essential attributes of a high-functioning health care system and powerful explainers of why the existing system is so difficult to improve. U.S. health law is not seamless; rather, it derives from multiple sources and is based on various theories that may be in tension with one another. There are state laws and federal laws, laws setting standards and laws providing funding, laws reinforcing professional prerogatives, laws furthering social goals, and laws promoting market competition. Complying with law is important, but health professionals also should understand that the legal and ethical constraints under which health systems …

BACKGROUND: Empathy and compassion are vital components of health care quality; however, physicians frequently miss opportunities for empathy and compassion in patient care. Despite evidence that empathy and compassion training can be effective, the specific behaviors that should be taught remain unclear. We synthesized the biomedical literature on empathy and compassion training in medical education to find the specific curricula components (skills and behaviors) demonstrated to be effective.
METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL using a previously published comprehensive search strategy. We screened reference lists of the articles meeting inclusion criteria to identify additional studies for potential inclusion. …

PCOM Scholarly Papers
Introduction: Shadowing a physician is an observational experience which includes a student observing a licensed healthcare provider caring for patients. Shadowing is commonly done by students before and during medical school, but little is known about the nature or extent of these extra-curricular observational experiences.
Objective: We hypothesized that shadowing experiences were common yet variable. We investigated the prevalence, nature, and perceived value of medical student experiences with shadowing physicians (both before and during medical school).
Methods: This survey-based study was non-experimental with a cross-sectional convenience sample of osteopathic medical students about their shadowing experiences before and during medical school. …
