STUDY QUESTION What knowledge, attitudes and intentions do US obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) residents have toward discussing age-related fertility decline and oocyte cryopreservation with their patients?
SUMMARY ANSWER Most OB/GYN residents believe that age-related fertility decline, but not oocyte cryopreservation, should be discussed during well-woman annual exams; furthermore, nearly half of residents overestimated the age at which female fertility markedly declines.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Oocyte cryopreservation can be utilized to preserve fertility potential. Currently, no studies of US OB/GYN residents exist that question their knowledge, attitudes, and intentions toward discussing age-related fertility decline and oocyte cryopreservation with patients.

Biochemistry and Microbiology
Many schools seek to predict performance on national exams required for medical school graduation using prematriculation and medical school performance data. The need for targeted intervention strategies for at-risk students has led much of this interest. Assumptions that preadmission data and high stakes in-house medical exams correlate strongly with national standardized exam performance needs to be examined. Looking at prematriculation data for predicting USMLE Step 1 performance, we found that MCAT exam totals and math-science GPA had the best prediction from a set of prematriculation values (adjusted R 2 = 11.7 %) for step 1. The addition of scores from …

The Changing Healthcare Roles Of Behavioral Health Professionals And Benefits Of Contemporary Education And Training, Jaimie Chen, Samuel Mayhugh, Houston Thompson
Student Scholarship – Psychology
With the rapid changes in healthcare over the years, inevitably, the roles of behavioral health professionals have changed in response. Notably, the burgeoning field of telehealth, the new structure of integrated care, and the cautions placed on using psychiatric medication all impact the responsibilities and expectations of behavioral health professionals. With the new directions in healthcare, prospective behavioral health professionals may find themselves unprepared in their career if education does not change in response to these new trends. In order to prepare these students for their future, educational institutions should reflect on their curriculum and make necessary adjustments. By doing …

Pediatric neuroimaging can provide a challenge to radiology residents during call due to the fact that it is infrequently encountered in many institutions. The goal of this teaching tool is to provide radiology residents with background knowledge in pediatric brain anatomy and pathology in preparation for taking call. There is one teaching tool and one assessment tool with answers, all three of which are in PowerPoint format. Emergency neuroradiology topics discussed in this module are sutures, skull fractures, bleeds, sulci and mass effect, cisterns, and herniations. After implementing this teaching tool at our institution with all incoming residents and fellows, …

E-Learning Modules
In an article published in 1993 by Shulman about higher education it was stated that, "Teaching takes practice. It takes feedback. It takes instruction." More and more we are becoming aware of that. There has been increasing recognition of the need to prepare medical students for their future teaching roles as intern/residents and physicians. There have been numerous publications addressing peer teaching in undergraduate education, but sparse literature addressing how medical students co-teach physical diagnosis to pre-clinical students in lieu of faculty. Traditionally in North America, full-time faculty members have assumed the major responsibility for teaching first- and second-year medical …

Central Lines In Children, Rishi Agrawal, Neha H. Shah
E-Learning Modules
Children with special health care needs are increasingly prevalent in US hospitals. The pediatric hospitalist is often the primary provider of inpatient care for these patients. However, exposure to this patient population during training varies from provider to provider. No published educational curricula are specific to the inpatient care of this population.
This publication is a self-directed education module on central lines in children, including indications for placement, types of lines available, and prevention and treatment of complications. The module includes a PowerPoint slide show, instructor guide, and questions for assessment.
The purpose of this project is to build a …

Toward A Deeper Understanding Of Disability: Physical Therapy Educators’ Reflections, Clarence Chan, Debra Engel, Jacqueline Ross
Publications and Research
This article describes the unique journey both of a blind student in our Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program and of the faculty who taught him as they all navigated through uncharted territories. Despite the fact that the physical therapy profession trains practitioners to help clients with disabilities to maximize their physical function and teaches them how to adapt to the challenges of daily activity, we initially assumed that a blind student would not be able to complete the program or be able to become a self-sufficient practitioner. We were very wrong. This article describes our learning process over the course …

Smartphone Mobile Application To Enhance Diagnosis Of Skin Cancer: A Guide For The Rural Practitioner, Shane E. Cook, Louis C. Palmer Md, Franklin D. Shuler Md, Phd
MIIR Faculty Research
Primary care physicians occupy a vital position to impact many devastating conditions, especially those dependent upon early diagnosis, such as skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and despite improvements in skin cancer therapy, patients with a delay in diagnosis and advanced disease continue to have a grave prognosis. Due to a variety of barriers, advanced stages of skin cancer are more prominent in rural populations. In order to improve early diagnosis four things are paramount: increased patient participation in prevention methods, establishment of screening guidelines, increased diagnostic accuracy of malignant lesions, and easier …
