AUIQ Complementary Biological System
The extensive use of crystal violet (CV) dyes may cause water pollution. A highly porous and functionalized activated carbon can be used for adsorption of CV dyes. Activated carbon was prepared from oil palm fronds through microwave-assisted pyrolysis and activation with phosphoric acid (H3PO4) for removal of CV dye from wastewater. The physico-chemical characteristics of oil palm fronds activated carbon (OPFAC) was employed by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis, Scanning Electron Methodology-Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDX) analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and point of zero charges (pHpzc). The adsorption parameters such …

Introduction: Children with moderate or severe wasting are at particularly high risk of recurrent or persistent diarrhoea, nutritional deterioration and death following a diarrhoeal episode. Lactoferrin and lysozyme are nutritional supplements that may reduce the risk of recurrent diarrhoeal episodes and accelerate nutritional recovery by treating or preventing underlying enteric infections and/or improving enteric function.
Methods and analysis: In this factorial, blinded, placebo-controlled randomised trial, we aim to determine the efficacy of lactoferrin and lysozyme supplementation in decreasing diarrhoea incidence and improving nutritional recovery in Kenyan children convalescing from comorbid diarrhoea and wasting. Six hundred children aged 6–24 months with …

Unraveling The Complex Dynamics Of Cardiac Fibrosis: Ccn1 As A Novel Regulator Of Scar Collagen Architecture And Structural Integrity In Myocardial Infarction., Annalara Garland Fischer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Expansion of the extracellular matrix (ECM), known as fibrosis, accompanies nearly all forms of cardiac disease; however, its most significant and complex manifestations arise following a myocardial infarction (MI). This process, principally led by fibroblasts, constitutes a necessary and adaptive response acutely to fill the void from cardiomyocyte necrosis following ischemic injury due to the heart’s lack of regenerative capacity. This acute response never fully resolves and contributes to ongoing collagen accumulation in non-infarcted regions, leading to diminished ventricular compliance, ongoing myocyte loss, and attrition in function—culminating in heart failure. Further, recent research demonstrates that concomitant with progressive increases in …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Exercise-Stimulated Resolution Of Inflammation And Its Dietary Dependence., Ernesto H. Pena Calderin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Diet-induced obesity and adipose tissue (AT) inflammation that ensues sets the stage for systemic metabolic inflammation, disrupted insulin signaling, and eventual type 2 diabetes (T2D) development. At the center of this pathology lies a disruption in endogenous inflammation resolution pathways characterized by an imbalance in lipid mediator production (greater abundance of pro-inflammatory to pro-resolving lipids). Additionally, obese states are characterized by adrenergic deficiency, especially in response to physical activity. Inflammatory processes have been experimentally mitigated by either the pharmacological inhibition of pro-inflammatory signals (i.e., Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and its receptor BLT1, which establishes a potent chemotactic stimulus …

Epidural Stimulation For Urogenital Dysfunction In The Spinal Cord Injured Rat., Natasha Lorraine Wilkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating, life changing event that greatly impacts quality of life. SCI can have body-wide, multi-system consequences including dysfunction within the urogenital system. Challenges with the urinary system include urinary incontinence, urine retention, and detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia all of which require maintenance through the regular use of catheters. Sexual dysfunction in men, who comprise nearly 80% of the SCI population, includes erectile dysfunction, anejaculation, retrograde ejaculation, poor expulsive force during ejaculation, and poor sperm quality. The treatment for sexual function in SCI men is focused more on fertility through the collection of sperm for insemination procedures …

Physicians’ Attitude, Knowledge, And Perceived Control Towards The Use Of Exercise As A Form Of Preventive Medicine, Matthew Robert Warner
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Exercise is a component of physical activity that can aid in the reduction of deaths, lowering obesity rates, and chronic illness. However, many Americans are not meeting the recommended physical activity levels (Carlson, et al., 2018). Quality and accurate health information regarding physical activity is one way to help combat health disparities. Health professionals such as primary care physicians can aid in promoting this lifestyle modification. However, there are shortfalls in physicians’ knowledge of using exercise as a form of preventive medicine for chronic illness. Many medical programs have little to no training in exercise principles (Cardinal et al., 2015). …

Development Of An Egg-Specific Mass Spectrometry Targeted Method For Processed Food Matrices, Liyun Zhang
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Egg is a major food allergen in the United States, causing symptoms from mild reactions to severe anaphylaxis. An egg-free diet remains the only management approach for egg allergy. Therefore, individuals and families living with egg allergies rely heavily on allergen statements on packaged food products for informed food choices. Currently, no labeling regulations exist for unintentionally introduced allergens, posing risks to consumers with egg allergies. Therefore, it is critical to have an accurate and reliable detection method in allergen control and management to determine the concentration of total protein from allergenic food sources. Traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays are routinely …

Canine Parasites In Southern Nevada Urban Dog Parks: Paravec Study, Miklo Azrael A. Alcala
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
While dogs are one of humans’ greatest companions, they also serve as hosts for a multitude of parasites. Urban dog parks serve as environments where the transmission of diseases is likely to occur. Exposure to infective agents, contained within the soil, intermediate hosts (e.g., rodents, rabbits), and feces, can directly affect the health of dogs and their owners. Other factors that can further influence canine health include age, previous diagnoses of parasites/diseases, and migration. Many dog owners visit dog parks to encourage socialization and exercise. Such activities are meant to improve health, but unawareness of microbiological organisms can lead to …
The Development Of Environmental Dna (Edna) Sampling For Arbovirus Vector Surveillance In Southern Nevada, Katharine Brooke Major
The Development Of Environmental Dna (Edna) Sampling For Arbovirus Vector Surveillance In Southern Nevada, Katharine Brooke Major
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Vector-borne diseases account for 17% of all infectious diseases worldwide and are responsible for more than 700,000 deaths annually. Two-thirds of the global population are at risk of arthropod-borne RNA viruses (arboviruses), spread by mosquitoes, ticks, and sandflies, with these pathogens accounting for 37% of all emerging human diseases. Arboviruses are becoming increasingly important causes of neurological disease in the United States, presenting a significant public health problem. In the absence of available vaccines and efficacious treatment options, accurate, rapid, and cost-effective surveillance of arbovirus vectors is critical for monitoring species distribution and mitigating disease transmission risk. Currently, mosquito vector …

Investigating The Role Of Insulin-Like Signaling In Paclitaxel-Induced Nociceptive Hypersensitivity Using Drosophila Melanogaster, Sreepradha Sridharan
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Paclitaxel (PTX), a chemotherapeutic that alters microtubule dynamics, is known to induce nociceptive hypersensitivity and sensory neuron damage in human patients and in Drosophila larvae. We used a modified feeding protocol to establish a genetically tractable Drosophila model of PTX-induced hypersensitivity. Larvae fed PTX exhibited hypersensitivity to thermal and mechanical stimuli. Thermal hypersensitivity was observed at low concentrations of PTX (even below 1 μM per ml of food), begins within 8 hours of PTX feeding, and did not completely resolve at the larval stage. Live imaging of peripheral thermal nociceptors showed that this hypersensitivity precedes observable neuronal damage. At low …

Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDAC), a highly aggressive, metastatic, and therapeutically resistant form of pancreatic cancer has been projected to become the second-leading cause of cancer related mortality in the United States. This is driven by its detection difficulty, treatment efficacy, and asymptomatic nature, among other factors. PDAC is driven predominantly by KRASG12D mutations, which are responsible for the initial development of pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (Pan-IN) lesions, that are further maintained and progressed until …
Preschool Executive Control And Adolescent Dietary Outcomes: Highlighting The Role Of Context, Marla Lopez
Preschool Executive Control And Adolescent Dietary Outcomes: Highlighting The Role Of Context, Marla Lopez
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Research has identified executive control (EC) as an important predictor of dietary outcomes among youth. Executive control in preschool age has been shown to predict important outcomes across development for youth, indicating that good, foundational EC abilities are associated with successful development in later life. Dietary outcomes across adolescence, an important transitional period for establishing healthy eating behaviors, are understudied. Therefore, the current study sought to link two critical developmental periods, examining how preschool EC is associated with dietary trajectories across adolescence. Further, the study aimed to identify how contextual factors, specifically indices of socio-economic status and the home and …

CD4+ T cells can either enhance or inhibit tumour immunity. Although regulatory T cells have long been known to impede antitumour responses1-5, other CD4+ T cells have recently been implicated in inhibiting this response6,7. Yet, the nature and function of the latter remain unclear. Here, using vaccines containing MHC class I (MHC-I) neoantigens (neoAgs) and different doses of tumour-derived MHC-II neoAgs, we discovered that whereas the inclusion of vaccines with low doses of MHC-II-restricted peptides (LDVax) promoted tumour rejection, vaccines containing high doses of the same MHC-II neoAgs (HDVax) inhibited rejection. Characterization of the inhibitory cells induced by HDVax identified …

Artificial Intelligence In Fusion Protein Three-Dimensional Structure Prediction: Review And Perspective, Himansu Kumar, Pora Kim
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have accelerated the prediction of unknown protein structures. However, accurately predicting the three-dimensional (3D) structures of fusion proteins remains a difficult task because the current AI-based protein structure predictions are focused on the WT proteins rather than on the newly fused proteins in nature. Following the central dogma of biology, fusion proteins are translated from fusion transcripts, which are made by transcribing the fusion genes between two different loci through the chromosomal rearrangements in cancer. Accurately predicting the 3D structures of fusion proteins is important for understanding the functional roles and mechanisms of action …

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) function to control infectious agents as well as to propagate inflammatory response in a variety of disease conditions. DNA damage associated with chromatin decondensation and NACHT domain-leucine-rich repeat-and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation have emerged as crucial events in NET formation, but the link between the two processes is unknown. In this study, we demonstrate that poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1), a key DNA repair enzyme, regulates NET formation triggered by NLRP3 inflammasome activation in neutrophils. Activation of mouse neutrophils with canonical NLRP3 stimulants LPS and nigericin induced NET formation, which was significantly abrogated by pharmacological …

OBJECTIVES: Cachexia is a metabolic disorder and comorbidity with cancer and heart failure. The syndrome impacts more than thirty million people worldwide, accounting for 20% of all cancer deaths. In acute myeloid leukemia, somatic mutations of the metabolic enzyme isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 and 2 cause the production of the oncometabolite D2-hydroxyglutarate (D2-HG). Increased production of D2-HG is associated with heart and skeletal muscle atrophy, but the mechanistic links between metabolic and proteomic remodeling remain poorly understood. Therefore, we assessed how oncometabolic stress by D2-HG activates autophagy and drives skeletal muscle loss.
METHODS: We quantified genomic, metabolomic, and proteomic changes in …

The RNA exosome is an evolutionarily conserved complex required for both precise RNA processing and decay. Pathogenic variants in EXOSC genes, which encode structural subunits of this complex, are linked to several autosomal recessive disorders. Here, we describe a missense allele of the EXOSC4 gene that causes a collection of clinical features in two affected siblings. This missense variant (NM_019037.3: exon3:c.560T>C) changes a leucine residue within a conserved region of EXOSC4 to proline (p.Leu187Pro). The two affected individuals show prenatal growth restriction, failure to thrive, global developmental delay, intracerebral and basal ganglia calcifications, and kidney failure. Homozygosity for the …

Neurogenetic disorders, such as neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), can cause cognitive and motor impairments, traditionally attributed to intrinsic neuronal defects such as disruption of synaptic function. Activity-regulated oligodendroglial plasticity also contributes to cognitive and motor functions by tuning neural circuit dynamics. However, the relevance of oligodendroglial plasticity to neurological dysfunction in NF1 is unclear. Here we explore the contribution of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) to pathological features of the NF1 syndrome in mice. Both male and female littermates (4-24 weeks of age) were used equally in this study. We demonstrate that mice with global or OPC-specific Nf1 heterozygosity exhibit defects …

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to develop a clinically intuitive and easily understandable scoring method using statistical metrics to visually determine the quality of a radiation treatment plan.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Data from 111 patients with head and neck cancer were used to establish a percentile-based scoring system for treatment plan quality evaluation on both a plan-by-plan and objective-by-objective basis. The percentile scores for each clinical objective and the overall treatment plan score were then visualized using a daisy plot. To validate our scoring method, 6 physicians were recruited to assess 60 plans, each using a scoring table consisting of a …

BACKGROUND: Rituximab and lenalidomide is a preferred option for relapsed indolent B cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Obinutuzumab may be a superior combination partner with lenalidomide given enhanced antibody dependent cellular cytotoxicity and phagocytosis compared to rituximab. Our aim was to determine the recommended phase 2 dose, safety, and activity of lenalidomide in combination with fixed dose of obinutuzumab in relapsed and refractory indolent B cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
METHODS: In this single-arm, open-label, phase 1/2 trial, we enrolled patients with relapsed or refractory WHO Grade 1-3A follicular lymphoma, marginal zone lymphoma and small lymphocytic lymphoma and adequate performance status (ECOG 0-2) at …
