Abstract

Background. Despite the growth of managed care in the United States, there is little information about the arrangements managed-care plans make with physicians.

Methods. In 1994 we surveyed by telephone 138 managed-care plans that were selected from 20 metropolitan areas nationwide. Of the 108 plans that responded, 29 were group-model or staff-model health maintenance organizations (HMOs), 50 were network or independentpractice–association (IPA) HMOs, and 29 were preferred-provider organizations (PPOs).

Results. Respondents from all three types of plan said they emphasized careful selection of physicians, although the group or staff HMOs tended to have more demanding requirements, …

The annual rates of hospital Chief Executive Officer (CEO) turnover are important to track and evaluate for several reasons. Like other industries, the extent of hospital CEO turnover on an aggregate level is an indicator of the current instability and pace of change within the hospital industry. Sudden large changes in leadership trends can indicate broad changes in the industry, and small changes can indicate a general satisfaction with the status-quo. Small Group Market Health Insurance Purchasing Cooperatives Revisited, Karl Polzer

National Health Policy Forum

As Congress was in the final stages of considering the Clinton administration's proposal for comprehensive health reform and various derivatives of it, this Forum session examined the progress of several purchasing cooperatives in helping employees of small firms find affordable insurance coverage. The first half of the meeting focused on California's purchasing alliance, especially its impact on prices in the small-group insurance market. Varying models of cooperatives (or alliances) being set up in Florida, Iowa, and Kentucky also were discussed, with special attention being paid to their potential for addressing fundamental problems such as rising costs and access to insurance.

The purpose of the study was to identify the determinants of job satisfaction of Virginia Hospital CEO's and to identify those descriptors that best characterize the role of the hospital CEO as defined by the CEO's themselves. The study sample consisted of all hospital CEO's in Virginia as listed by the Virginia Hospital Association. The study employed a four part survey instrument that investigated four major areas: (1) personal and hospital demographics; (2) self rated performance; (3) a semantic scale measuring the concept of Hospital CEO; and (4) The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire.
