In late May–early June 2011, the Forum sponsored a site visit to Denver, Colorado, to observe innovative efforts to improve the health of Coloradans and reduce the cost of health care. The three-day agenda was designed to convey the breadth and interconnectedness of the efforts underway in Denver and to highlight both successes and challenges. Trends Of Increase In Western Medical Services In Traditional Medicine Hospitals In China, Jay J. Shen, Ying Wang, Fang Lin, Jun Lu, Charles B. Moseley, Mei Sun, Mo Hao

Background:

Compare changes in types of hospital service revenues between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospitals and Western-medicine based general hospitals.

Methods:

97 TCM hospitals and 103 general hospitals were surveyed in years of 2000 and 2004. Six types of medical service revenue between the two types of hospitals were compared overtime. The national statistics from 1999 to 2008 were also used as complementary evidence.

Results:

For TCM hospitals, the percentage of service revenue from Western medicine increased from 44.3% to 47.4% while the percentage of service revenue from TCM declined from 26.4% to 18.8% from 1999 to 2004. Percentages of …

Conclusions:

• The results of this study suggest that 68% of the population from this primary care practice got a dilated eye exam within a year. Facilitators were awareness/knowledge about the DR and DFE, eye problems and information from their doctors.
• Almost 20% of the patients did not get an eye exam as recommended. Various barriers included cost, transportation issues, time constraint issues, lack of symptoms of the disease, and fear of the exam.
• There is a significance difference in getting an eye exam by the type of insurance with a smaller percentage of Medicaid recipients (60%) meeting the guidelines compared …

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a serious, life-threatening thrombotic disease, which results in considerable health and economic consequences each year for the United States. These consequences include a toll of 83,000 deaths and an economic impact between 1,5 and 5 billion. Approaches to strategy selection by physicians and other health-care specialists are based mainly upon cost, technology availability, and cultural tolerance regarding radiation exposure. The purpose of this study was to determine the most cost-effective diagnostic strategy with patients suspected of PE among several strategies currently used by examining their detection failure rates. Previous research in the medical setting has credited empathy with improving treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction, though operational definitions of the concept are widely varied and indicate inconsistencies in conceptualization and subsequent assessment. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to examine the role of empathy in the medical setting. A model of conditions for empathy in medicine was developed through in-depth interviews with 21 healthcare professionals, utilizing their professional experiences and perspectives to structure the multi-level model. Home visitation services for young and expectant families have the potential to improve child and parent outcomes in a broad variety of ways, but the effectiveness of home visits may depend on the nature, frequency, and duration of these services. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA) created a new federal funding stream to promote the development and implementation of evidence-based home visiting programs.
