The methodology for this study was a qualitative literature review following a systematic approach of the smartphone usage among physicians in hospitals. Fifty-one articles were selected for this study based on inclusion criteria. Utilization Of 340b Program In A Rural Hospital, Heath Ashford, Lauren Valli, William K. Willis, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Introduction: The 340B is a federal program that provides eligible rural hospitals, providers, and clinics the capability to purchase medications at reduced prices for outpatient use. Enrollment in the 340B program requires drug manufacturers to supply covered healthcare entities and eligible healthcare organizations medications at substantially reduced prices and has allowed covered entities to extend federal resources by offering more comprehensive services and reaching more of the vulnerable populations. The purpose of this research study was to examine utilization of 340B program within provider based clinics of a university medical school affiliated with a rural hospital to assess the benefits …

Healthcare Of The Uninsured Population In West Virginia And The United States, Leslie Salyers, Mounica Mummaneni, William K. Willis, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Introduction: The uninsured population in the United States has increased dramatically over the past few years. Hospitals and physicians bear the financial burden of the uninsured by compensating for the billions of dollars in bad debt or uncompensated care they incur each year. Emergency rooms and other healthcare facilities are left with billions in uncompensated care due to 47 million uninsured Americans. Uncompensated care in 2006 was $31.2 billion. Majority of individuals accounting for uncompensated care are those living at or below the federal poverty level and those individuals who can afford health coverage but freely choose to forgo purchasing …

Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale

The Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale, Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale, and Post-Discharge Coping Difficulty Scale were developed by Dr. Marianne Weiss to measure nurse-sensitive discharge care processes and patient outcomes. Three versions of the scales were developed concurrently for different patient populations – Adult medical-surgical patients, Parents of hospitalized children, and Postpartum Patient mothers (see Weiss & Piacentine, 2006, Weiss et al., 2007, and Bobay et al., 2018 for description of the development and initial testing). Additional scales and information about translation rights are located at Marquette Nursing.

Bundled Payments For Care Improvement Initiative – Insights From The Test Pilots Of Payment Reform, Jason M. Sutherland, William B. Borden Jan 2015

Bundled Payments For Care Improvement Initiative – Insights From The Test Pilots Of Payment Reform, Jason M. Sutherland, William B. Borden

Medicine Faculty Publications

Background: The Medicare Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) pilot program aims to reward high-value providers by setting a global payment target for particular episodes of care. The representativeness of BPCI participants will influence the ability of this pilot to inform policy decisions. Methods: We linked the Medicare lists of participants in the risk-bearing portion of BPCI Model 2, encompassing acute and post-acute care, to the American Hospital Association resource file and the 2013 Hospital Value-Based Purchasing quality performance data. We classified episode-initiating hospitals by the number of bundles in which they were participating into “narrow”, “medium” and “comprehensive”. The …

The New Era Of Health Care: Catholic Health Initiatives Journey With Bundled Payment For Care Improvement In Total Joint Replacements, Tamara Cull

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationships between total costs of care and total readmission rates for Medicare patients undergoing major joint replacement of the lower extremity (knee/hip arthroplasty) at one of four Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) facilities participating in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the BPCI program by using complete Medicare claims data for beneficiaries. Both univariate and multivariate models were utilized to examine the impact of the BPCI initiative on costs and readmissions. Findings from this study suggest a relationship between Phase 2 BPCI participation and decreased costs. Hospitals participating in the Phase 2 BPCI program had total …

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects

The Capstone Project is focused on communicating, influencing and educating other health care professionals regarding the role of occupational therapy in the future model of primary care delivery initiated by the adoption of the Affordable Care Act and the Triple Aim Initiative. Currently, primary care, the largest health care platform in United States, is not inclusive of occupational therapy services. Occupational therapists have the scope, knowledge and understanding to be part of the redesigned team model of primary care. Educating those currently working in primary care about adding occupational therapy services can have a significant impact on the profession of …

Icd-10-Cm Implementation Strategies: An Application Of The Technology Acceptance Model, Judith Monestime

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The United States is one of the last countries to transition to the 10th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) coding system. The move from the 35-year-old system, ICD-9, to ICD-10, represents a milestone in the transformation of the 21st century healthcare industry. All covered healthcare entities were mandated to use the ICD-10 system on October 1, 2015, to justify medical necessity, an essential component in determining whether a service is payable or not. Despite the promising outcomes of this shift, more than 70% of healthcare organizations identified concerns related to education efforts, including lack of best practices …

The Effect Of A Culture Of Safety On Patient Throughput, Laurie Lee Dawn Dillon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is a national movement to create improvements in patient safety and outcomes due to evolutionary changes in the healthcare. Many health care organizations are using the framework of a culture of safety in order to create a reliable and stable work environment that emphasizes safety and improves patient outcomes. Patient throughput, defined as the active management of the supply of patient beds (rooms for occupation) to the demand of patients to beds and the length of time it takes for this action to occur, has been identified as one of the areas in need of improvement. This study considered …
