In the context of modern medicine, complexity hospital’s management is regarded as the primary cause of medical error (ME). The new healthcare paradigm of “Patient-Focused Care”, patient’s right to receive safe healthcare treatment is considered as main indicator in Standar Akreditasi Rumah Sakit of 2012 (SARS 2012) in Indonesia, through the implementation of 6 Patient Safety (KP) standards. In the category of emergency medical treatment, Sepsis is considered as a disease with high mortality and morbidity rate. The use of The International Classification of Diseases, based on Ninth Revision (ICD-9), have caused terminological confusion and contribute to the increase of …

Hospitals increasingly are expected to provide better health services (Muchtar, 2011). Excellent service and quality have an impact on customer satisfaction and loyalty. One measure of quality achievement is customer loyalty. Charitas Hospital had a decline in customer loyalty from 2013 to 2015 by 80%. It was determined by a decrease in the quality indicators that BOR, LOS, TOI, GDR, NDR which dropped on the last three years (Data RS-Caritas, 2016). Quality management TQM and Six Sigma respectively conceptually and empirically proven as a quality improvement method to improve organizational performance. How is the quality of service at the Charitas …

The government which is the Ministry of Health through its regulations mandates the importance of patient safety. This can be seen from the mention of patient safety in the four articles in Undang-Undang Number 44 Year 2009 about Hospital and specifically in the Minister of Health Regulation. The importance of patient safety issues in hos pitals is not directly proportional to the performance indicators of the BLU Hospital written inPeraturan Direktur Jenderal Pembendaharaan Number 34 Year 2014 about the Guidelines for Performance Appraisal of Public Ser vice Bodies for Health Services. In this regulation, it can be seen that the …

One Health (OH) positions health professionals as agents for change and provides a platform to manage determinants of health that are often not comprehensively captured in medicine or public health alone. However, due to the organization of societies and disciplines, and the sectoral allocation of resources, the development of transdisciplinary approaches requires effort and perseverance. Therefore, there is a need to provide evidence on the added value of OH for governments, researchers, funding bodies, and stakeholders. This paper outlines a conceptual framework of what OH approaches can encompass and the added values they can provide. The framework was developed during …

Improving Patient Safety Through High Reliability Organizations, Jared Padgett, Kenneth Gossett, Roger Mayer, Wen-Wen Chien, Freda Turner
Improving Patient Safety Through High Reliability Organizations, Jared Padgett, Kenneth Gossett, Roger Mayer, Wen-Wen Chien, Freda Turner
The Qualitative Report
Preventable medical errors result in the loss of 200,000 lives per year with associated financial and operational burdens on organizations and society. Widespread preventable patient harm occurs despite increases in healthcare regulations. High reliability organization theory contributes to improved safety and may potentially reverse this trend. This single case study explored the introduction of a safety culture and subsequent improvements in patient safety in a reliability-seeking organization. Fourteen participants from a subacute nursing facility were selected using purposeful sampling criterion. Data were collected through participant interviews, document reviews, and group observation. Five themes emerged from an analysis of collected data …

Benefit Of Report Card Feedback After Point-Of-Care Assessment Of Communication Quality Indicators, Michael H. Farrell, Clair R. Sprenger, Shelbie L. Sullivan, Bree A. Trisler, Jessica J F Kram, Erin K. Ruppel
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Purpose
Communication is crucial for patient experience and biomedical outcomes. Training programs improve communication but are too resource-intensive for sustained use across an entire health care organization. This study demonstrates in a heterogeneous set of encounters the efficacy of quantitative feedback on two groups of physician communication behaviors: 1) jargon explanation, and 2) assessment of patient understanding.
Methods
We used a secure Internet application to audio-record conversations between primary care physicians and 54 patients. Transcripts were quantitatively abstracted using explicit-criteria definitions for assessments of understanding and jargon explanations. These data were conveyed to physicians using a previously tested report card. …
Understanding And Using Patient Experience Feedback To Improve Health Care Quality: Systematic Review And Framework Development, Emmanuel Kumah, Felix Osei-Kesse, Cynthia Anaba
Understanding And Using Patient Experience Feedback To Improve Health Care Quality: Systematic Review And Framework Development, Emmanuel Kumah, Felix Osei-Kesse, Cynthia Anaba
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Patient experience data is increasingly collected worldwide; however, questions persist regarding how it is used to improve health care quality. Synthesizing information from the existing literature, we have developed an empirically based framework to help organizations and managers understand what to do with patient experience feedback to improve health care quality at the organizational level. We identified six post-data collection/analysis activities, which were categorized into three main themes: 1) make sense of the data, 2) communicate and explain the data, and 3) plan for improvement. Our framework suggests that simply executing a survey will not improve performance. It is necessary …

Do Healthcare Professionals With High Weight Biases Provide Different Quality Of Care To Obese Compared To Normal Weight Patients?, Justine Leigh Seymour
Do Healthcare Professionals With High Weight Biases Provide Different Quality Of Care To Obese Compared To Normal Weight Patients?, Justine Leigh Seymour
Theses and Dissertations
Though weight bias has been acknowledged in the health field, it is less understood if and how weight bias affects quality of care. The purpose of this study was to determine if weight bias exhibited by healthcare professionals (HCPs) impacts quality of healthcare provided to obese individuals. HCPs (n=220; 88% female, 87% nurses) in the Midwest region of the United States were recruited to complete an online survey. Participants completed the Attitude Towards Obese Persons scale (ATOP) to assess weight bias and responded to hypothetical patient scenarios to evaluate quality of care. A median split was calculated for ATOP scores …
Education Of Nurse Practitioners And Physician Assistants; What Role, If Any, For Physicians In Determining Their Scope Of Practice?, Joseph I. Shapiro
Education Of Nurse Practitioners And Physician Assistants; What Role, If Any, For Physicians In Determining Their Scope Of Practice?, Joseph I. Shapiro
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Recent changes in legislation allow for non-physicians to independently perform many of the duties previously restricted to physicians. There are potentially benefits to these changes, but the author is concerned that some of the attributes of physicians induced by the long and rigorous training embedded in the profession may be absent in this new, independent health-care work force.

Repealing The Aca Without A Replacement — The Risks To American Health Care, Barack Obama
Repealing The Aca Without A Replacement — The Risks To American Health Care, Barack Obama
United States Public Health Resources
Health care policy often shifts when the country’s leadership changes. That was true when I took office, and it will likely be true with President-elect Donald Trump. I am proud that my administration’s work, through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and other policies, helped millions more Americans know the security of health care in a system that is more effective and efficient. At the same time, there is more work to do to ensure that all Americans have access to high-quality, affordable health care. What the past 8 years have taught us is that health care reform requires an evidence-based, …

Toward A Discourse Community For Telemedicine: A Domain Analytic View Of Published Scholarship, Louiza Patsis
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
In the past 20 years, the use of telemedicine has increased, with telemedicine programs increasingly being conducted through the Internet and ISDN technologies. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the discourse community of telemedicine. This study examined the published literature on telemedicine as it pertains to quality of care, defined as correct diagnosis and treatment (Bynum and Irwin 2011). Content analysis and bibliometrics were conducted on the scholarly discourse, and the most prominent authors and journals were documented to paint and depict the epistemological map of the discourse community of telemedicine. A taxonomy based on grounded research of …
