Factors Associated With Outpatient Follow-Up After A Pediatric Inpatient Stay At A Community Hospital, Shuchi Jani, Joshua Fogel, Clare Kelly
Factors Associated With Outpatient Follow-Up After A Pediatric Inpatient Stay At A Community Hospital, Shuchi Jani, Joshua Fogel, Clare Kelly
Publications and Research
Background and objectives: Pediatric settings often use a patient-centered medical home model in caring for patients in the outpatient setting and for attempting to connect inpatient care with outpatient followup. This medical home model has proven to be beneficial in many aspects of patient care, but there needs to be a good transition between inpatient and outpatient services. Our goal in this study is to determine the association of particular variables with adherence to outpatient follow-up after a general inpatient stay, in the pediatric population.
Methods: In a retrospective sample of 221 patients, we study the association of variables such …

Using Ai And Nlp To Alleviate Physician Burnout, Aaron Martin
Using Ai And Nlp To Alleviate Physician Burnout, Aaron Martin
Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is widely recognized as a powerful tool with potential for many healthcare applications. One application gaining interest is using AI to help solve physician burnout – the state of disillusionment among doctors tired of repetitive data entry tasks, as well as administrative duties, and excessive time spent combing through patient data. In this session, one of healthcare’s top innovators will examine how the power of AI, when merged with natural language processing (NLP), can alleviate many physician burnout woes.
Aaron Martin, a former executive leader and innovator at Amazon before he moved to healthcare, will take a …
Does Work-Induced Fatigue Accumulate Across Three Compressed 12 Hour Shifts In Hospital Nurses And Aides?, Brennan J. Thompson
Does Work-Induced Fatigue Accumulate Across Three Compressed 12 Hour Shifts In Hospital Nurses And Aides?, Brennan J. Thompson
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
Fatigue-related impairments in the nursing workforce contribute to a multitude of health, safety, and economic consequences at the individual, organizational and societal levels. Long and compressed work schedules are commonly worked in the healthcare industry, but more research is needed to understand the cumulative effects of multiple work shifts on physiology-based performance outcomes in nurses. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a single nursing work shift versus three compressed (one every 24 hours) 12 hour shifts on performance-based fatigue in nurses and aides. Twenty-six fulltime hospital working nurses and aides (age = 36.1 ± 13.3 …

Development Of The Resident Wellness Scale For Measuring Resident Wellness, R. Brent Stansfield, Dan Giang, Tsveti Markova
Development Of The Resident Wellness Scale For Measuring Resident Wellness, R. Brent Stansfield, Dan Giang, Tsveti Markova
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Purpose: Graduate medical education programs have a responsibility to monitor resident wellness. Residents are at risk of burnout, depression, and suicide. Burnout and depression are associated with poor patient care. Many existing tools measure burnout, depression, and general human well-being, but resident wellness is a distinct construct. We aimed to develop an instrument to measure resident wellness directly.
Methods: An expert panel from two purposefully different graduate medical education institutions generated a behavior- and experience-based model of resident wellness. The panel and resident leaders from both institutions generated 92 items, which were tested alongside anchor scales measuring burnout, depression, personality, …

Mullane, Amanda Wilson, Shamsuddin Virani, Scott M. Weissman, Brenda Ramczyk, Pamela Vanderwall, James L. Weese
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Precision medicine is a term describing strategies to promote health and prevent and treat disease based on an individual’s genetic, molecular, and lifestyle characteristics. Oncology precision medicine (OPM) is a cancer treatment approach targeting cancer-specific genetic and molecular alterations. Implementation of an OPM clinical program optimally involves the support and collaboration of multiple departments, including administration, medical oncology, pathology, interventional radiology, genetics, research, and informatics. In this review, we briefly introduce the published evidence regarding OPM’s potential effect on patient outcomes and discuss what we have learned over the first year of operating an OPM program within an integrated health …
Confidential Care For Adolescents In The U.S. Health Care System, Priya R. Pathak, Adriana Chou
Confidential Care For Adolescents In The U.S. Health Care System, Priya R. Pathak, Adriana Chou
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
In providing care for adolescents, maintaining confidentiality should be considered a human right and an evidence-based component of quality care. Unfortunately, complexities in the U.S. legal and health care systems have created a setting in which confidential care is inaccessible to many adolescent patients. Federal laws provide a minimum standard for confidentiality protections, but variations in state legislation relating to minor consent, special health care services, and confidentiality exemptions create large variability in adolescent confidentiality rights across the country. In certain contexts, such as consensual sexual activity, legal provisions may not align with professional ethical standards in adolescent care. In …

Optimising Decentralisation For The Health Sector By Exploring The Synergy Of Decision Space, Capacity And Accountability: Insights From The Philippines, Harvy Joy Liwanag, Kaspar Wyss
Optimising Decentralisation For The Health Sector By Exploring The Synergy Of Decision Space, Capacity And Accountability: Insights From The Philippines, Harvy Joy Liwanag, Kaspar Wyss
Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications
Background
Several studies on decentralisation have used the ‘decision space’ approach to assess the breadth of space made available to decision-makers at lower levels of the health system. However, in order to better understand how decentralisation becomes effective for the health sector, analysis should go beyond assessing decision space and include the dimensions of capacity and accountability. Building on Bossert’s earlier work on the synergy of these dimensions, we analysed decision-making in the Philippines where governmental health services have been devolved to local governments since 1992.
Methods
Using a qualitative research design, we interviewed 27 key decision-makers at different levels …

As these facilities were one of the largest employers in the area, their impact was significant. Additionally, accessibility to necessary medical services was essential. Thus, sustainability of rural hospitals was vital. In order to assess sustainability, exploration into financial and quality outcomes could help support their ability to thrive.
Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study was to determine the sustainability of rural hospitals in the U.S. by examining variables that affect these institutions such as accessibility, availability of services, quality outcomes, and …
The Utilization Of Telehealth/ Telemedicine In Cardiology In Rural Areas, Sophia Noplis, Jocelyn Stout
The Utilization Of Telehealth/ Telemedicine In Cardiology In Rural Areas, Sophia Noplis, Jocelyn Stout
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: Telecardiology has been defined as a way of practicing cardiology through the utilization of telecommunications and a more cost-effective way to deliver cardiac care. As a subset of telemedicine, telecardiology has functioned to bring providers to underserved communities through technological mechanisms. Rural regions have turned to telemedicine and tapped into a network of clinical institutions exchanging practitioners and patients to emphasize value-based instead of volume-based care.
Methodology: The methodology of this qualitative study was a literature review having used mixed methodologies. Five electronic databases and government websites were utilized, and one semi-structured interview with an expert in …
