The purpose of this qualitative descriptive phenomenological study, guided by role theory, was to explore bedside nurses' perceptions of their role regarding patient polypharmacy. Twelve bedside nurses were interviewed on their roles in polypharmacy and medication management for elderly patients. The interviews were analyzed and revealed three distinct themes and …

Impact Of Integrated Laboratory Data Transfer Portals On Patient Results And Reports, Charmane Latrece Richie

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

An operational problem exists in which some healthcare organizations cannot maintain a suitable supporting data transfer system, which impacts the integrated laboratory data transfer portals designed to receive and send secure patient laboratory results and reports. This quantitative study examined whether an association exists between patient reporting turnaround times and specific test code nomenclatures used when comparing an older referral laboratory interface (RLI) laboratory information system (LIS) to the newer electronic orders and resulting (EOR) system using the Covance expanded laboratory management services (ELMS) NexGEN database from 2016-2020. The Donabedian model served as the framework for this study. The sampling …

Process Improvement To Reduce Route Of Medication Administration Errors In Patients With Enteral Feeding Tubes, Elizabeth Scott

Doctoral Projects

Advances in health information management in the form electronic health records, computerized provider order entry systems, and clinical decision support systems and tools have enhanced the productivity, effectiveness, and efficiency of healthcare. However, the cost of these positive effects does come at the expense of other factors. Along with the introduction of Clinical Provider Order Entry (CPOE) systems, organizations have experienced new possibilities for medication errors and risks to patient safety. This exploratory descriptive quantitative multivariate study included 2 nationwide online surveys that examined the frequency of moderate-to-severe symptoms of distress within the anxiety-depression spectrum, and the extent that 8 pain-related factors influenced and predicted episodes of anxiety and depressed mood, which included 2 demographic risk factors (age range …

Verbal Abuse Toward Early Career Nurses And The Effect To Workforce Operations, Steven G. Purdon Jan 2020

Verbal Abuse Toward Early Career Nurses And The Effect To Workforce Operations, Steven G. Purdon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractSeveral studies report that healthcare workers face verbal abuse from patients, patients’ family members, and other healthcare personnel at increasingly higher rates, and trends depict early-career registered nurses (ECRNs) are affected disproportionally. This negative trend can affect the future registered nurse (RN) workforce and create a potential shortfall of qualified nurses. It has become increasingly important for hospital administrators to mitigate verbal abuse among ECRNs to manage their future RN workforce. This purpose of this quantitative study was to empirically evaluate the effects of verbal abuse towards ECRNs. This study used the social exchange theory to provide a framework that …

Structural Predictors Of Lights And Sirens Use By Emergency Medical Services, Justin Alex Sleffel Jan 2020

Structural Predictors Of Lights And Sirens Use By Emergency Medical Services, Justin Alex Sleffel

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Ambulances regularly respond to scenes and transport patients while using lights and sirens (L&S), which are associated with an increased risk of vehicle crashes. The use of L&S persists, despite the risks, which impact emergency medical service (EMS) workers, patients, and other drivers and pedestrians on U.S. roadways. To understand the factors associated with ambulance crashes while using L&S, this study applied the Donabedian model to the problem. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between 3 organizational structural factors—organizational type, organizational status (staffing model), and level of service—and ambulance crash rates while using L&S. Implementing A Diabetes Optimization Protocol For Elective Surgery Patients, Barbie Denise Harbaugh Jan 2020

Implementing A Diabetes Optimization Protocol For Elective Surgery Patients, Barbie Denise Harbaugh

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Diabetes is a recognized risk factor for postoperative infection, acute renal failure, ileus, and lengthy hospital stay. Optimal screening, management, and scheduling of elective surgery for diabetic patients has been shown to improve quality care, decrease complications, and increase the efficiency and lower the costs of preoperative patient care. However, surgery cancellations are common due to inadequate preoperative glycemic control and poor intraoperative glycemic control, which is a recognized risk factor for perioperative or postoperative complications. There were no clinical practice guidelines or optimization protocols for elective surgery patients at a small rural hospital in the Northeast United States. The …
