Drug abuse is considered to be the leading problem facing the world and is ranked the first in the list of the top 10 major issues affecting the world population. Abuse of narcotics among youth continues to be a major threat to society as it affects not only the health conditions of the users but is also associated with some secondary impacts, which could include increased immorality and insecurity. Many of the narcotics abusers have different reasons for engaging in the vice. Some of the reasons include family issues or exposure to psychological pressure or shock or depression, or they …

Diabetes As It Relates To Stress, Anxiety And Lifestyle Choices, Kayla C. Dedloff
2020 Symposium Posters
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that impacts 29 million people in the United States. Diabetes is a disease that develops when one's body becomes resistant to insulin, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates, and the blood glucose levels are increased. If hyperglycemia is not managed, it will result in complications. Management of stress is significant in diabetic patients because stressing intensifies diabetes. The majority of type 2 diabetes patients are overwhelmed with managing the disease, and when they can’t control their blood glucose, it results in depression and anxiety. There is a link between lifestyle choices and type …

Employer Services is one of the many divisions within OhioHealth. The division’s focus is to improve the health and wellness of different employers. This includes onsite clinics, health screenings, flu shots, fitness and nutrition programming, and tobacco cessation programs. OhioHealth offers biometric screenings to employers to determine how healthy employees are. The number of risk factors an employee determines their health insurance. OhioHealth’s 2 largest companies are Nationwide Children’s Hospital and OhioHealthy. Part of these biometric screenings includes screening for tobacco. These cotinine results are stored in a physical book that they bring to different biometric events. The majority of …

Global Public Health | Senior Theses
Background. In recent years, the United States has been greatly affected by prescription drug overdose deaths, 68% of which are caused by opioids. Like many communities nationwide, Marin County in California is deeply affected by the opioid epidemic with accidental overdose being one of the leading causes of injury-related death. This study examines how fatal and non-fatal opioid overdoses in Marin County are associated with factors such as suspected fentanyl involvement, naloxone administration (EMS), and repeat overdose events.
Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted by Marin County’s Health and Human Services using data collected from EMS dispatch calls and vital …

A Protocol To Increase Referral Rates To Diabetic Education, David M. Rokser
A Protocol To Increase Referral Rates To Diabetic Education, David M. Rokser
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
In 2015, approximately 30.3 million Americans, including 10.5% of the population of Minnesota, had been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (American Diabetes Association, 2019). Increased risk of diabetic complications including neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy, cardiovascular disease, and chronic wounds has been associated with an elevated hemoglobin A1C (HgA1C). Formal diabetic education has been shown to be a cost-effective intervention to reduce HgA1C. The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion published an objective within HealthyPeople 2020 that seeks to increase the percentage of diabetics receiving formal diabetic education in the United States from 46.9% of adults to 58.4%. The purpose of this …
Management Of Atrial Fibrillation With Smartphone Technology, Teresa Praus
Management Of Atrial Fibrillation With Smartphone Technology, Teresa Praus
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia affecting over six million people; it is predicted to increase two-fold by the year 2050. This arrhythmia results in a lack of
atrial/ventricular communication, accompanied by ineffective atrial contraction, suboptimal ventricular filling, and thrombus formation. This may lead to stroke, and ultimately heart failure. The current economic burden related to the complications of atrial fibrillation is estimated to be greater than $6 billion annually with potentially catastrophic events, further increasing expenditure.
When patients experience symptoms related to atrial fibrillation, it is common for them to present to a hospital emergency department. These visits, …
Point-Of-Care Reminders To Prompt Provider Adherence With Diabetes Care Guidelines For Adults, Eric E. Spohn
Point-Of-Care Reminders To Prompt Provider Adherence With Diabetes Care Guidelines For Adults, Eric E. Spohn
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Diabetes is a complex, chronic illness, and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality (ODPHP, 2019). Gaps in diabetes care exist between clinical guidelines and interventions provided in the clinical setting (ADA, 2015; Chauhan et al., 2017; Renders et al., 2001; Worswick et al., 2013). Improved diabetes management strategies and interventions among healthcare providers are essential to close the quality gap. The purpose of this evidenced-based practice (EBP) project was to prompt providers to adhere to diabetes care guidelines using a paper point-of-care reminder over a 12-week period. Provider performance rates covering four specific guidelines were measured: HbA1c, microalbuminuria, diabetic …
Forecasting The Essential Chemotherapy Needed For Treatment Of Children With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia In Low- And Middle-Income Countries, Brian T. Lewis
Forecasting The Essential Chemotherapy Needed For Treatment Of Children With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia In Low- And Middle-Income Countries, Brian T. Lewis
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common pediatric cancer, with contemporary therapy resulting in a 90% survival in high-income countries (HIC). However, an estimated 89% of the world’s children live in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) where survival is much lower. Lack of access to essential chemotherapy contributes significantly to the decreased survival rates for LMIC, and inaccurate forecasting of chemotherapy needed may lead to stockouts or oversupply. This chapter describes a simple forecasting system with population and patient-based multipliers for each drug used in the treatment of pediatric ALL, thus estimating the essential chemotherapy quantities needed for a …

Development And Reliability Of A Patient Experience Inventory Tool For Hospitals, Agnes Barden, Nicole Giammarinaro, Natalie Bashkin, Larry Lutsky
Patient Experience Journal
This study explores the development and reliability testing of the newly developed Patient Experience Inventory for Hospitals (PXI-H). Created as an organizational self-assessment patient experience tool, it guides healthcare leaders in evaluating attitudes and behaviors as well as structures and programs impacting patient experience within a hospital setting. The PXI-H is organized within four pillars: Leadership, Education and Development, Data and Analytics and Patient-and-Family Centeredness, which were determined to be internally consistent based on examining coefficient alphas and the item-total correlations. Principal component analysis also determined items with highest loadings aligned onto the pillars in which there were assigned, confirming …

Implementing Inter-Professional Patient-Family Centered Plan Of Care Meetings On An Inpatient Hospital Unit, Nicolas Hernandez, Alice Fornari, Sage Rose, Leanne Tortez
Patient Experience Journal
Inpatient plan of care meetings support efforts to encourage collaborative practice and patient-family centered care and result in an effective strategy to enhance communication and patient satisfaction. Clinical team members participated in patient/family centered plan of care meetings at a community hospital in a selected inpatient unit with full time hospitalist physicians. Quantitative data were gathered pre/post implementation from the external Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health Care Providers (HCAHPS) survey. HCAHPS data were collected independently, specifically for questions related to communication between patients, family members/guardians and the medical team and also the effects of care transition. There was a slow …
Finding Common Threads: How Patients, Physicians And Nurses Perceive The Patient Gown, Christy M. Lucas, Cheryl Dellasega
Finding Common Threads: How Patients, Physicians And Nurses Perceive The Patient Gown, Christy M. Lucas, Cheryl Dellasega
Patient Experience Journal
Evidence-based care is standard practice in medicine, but the patient gown has fallen outside the scope of scholarly research. The current gown renders a patient vulnerable, diminishing patients’ sense of identity, agency, and dignity with its one-size-fits-none design. The impact on providers is similarly neglected. Our objective was to explore how patients and providers derive meaning from patient gowns. A convenience sample at an academic medical center was interviewed utilizing a standardized framework developed by a medical student and two PhD-prepared researchers with experience in qualitative methods. The study was inductive in nature, seeking to understand perceptions of the patient …
Using Shared Mental Models To Conceptualize Patients As Professionals, Decision-Makers, Collaborators, And Members Of Interprofessional Healthcare Teams, Umair Majid
Patient Experience Journal
Patient engagement has become the buzz-phrase of 21st Century health care. Around the world, healthcare systems involve patients in a wide range of activities including drug development, research, and policy design. There are strong institutional pressures for patient engagement in healthcare activities that have been bolstered by ethical imperatives and social and organizational benefits from patient engagement. There is a trend to center efforts to cultivate engagement initiatives that are meaningful to patients and family. However, these efforts are characterized by multiple challenges, for example, tokenism and the lack of organizational support. These barriers may persist in healthcare professionals’ …

The Essential Nature Of Experience In A Time Of Crisis And Beyond, Jason A. Wolf
Patient Experience Journal
As we have engaged with community members around the world, the last few weeks have provided a unique window into the face of this crisis as we have seen not only the deadliest days on record, but have also had some of the most hopeful conversations at the same time. While we are and still will face challenges in the weeks to come, we too have seen humanity elevated in profound and powerful ways. While it can be offered with little argument that things will never be the same, in moving forward, we too can assert and I believe, that …
