Exploring African American Women’S Experiences With Breastfeeding Support In Health Services, Jennifer Johnson Jan 2022

Exploring African American Women’S Experiences With Breastfeeding Support In Health Services, Jennifer Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Breastfeeding provides complete nutrition to infants and reduces the risk of many chronic diseases among infants and their mothers, yet disparities exist. African American mothers have the lowest breastfeeding rates compared to other ethnic groups in the United States. There is limited qualitative research on health services support from the African American mother’s perspective. Understanding health behaviors may improve programming, reduce racial and ethnic disparities, and address social determinants of health. The purpose of this study was to explore African American women’s beliefs, experiences, perspectives, and opinions around breastfeeding support provided in healthcare settings by healthcare professionals. From a conceptual …

Coping Strategies Linked To African Americans With Chronic Kidney Disease, Gabrielle Lawrence

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a health problem that affects African Americans more often than Whites and other ethnic groups. Individuals with CKD need to develop strategies to help with the disease and life challenges. Social support, self-management, and self-efficacy are factors that may influence how individuals with CKD cope with the disease. This quantitative correlational study examined the relationships among self-management, self-efficacy, and coping behaviors in African Americans with CKD in Stages 3 or 4. In addition, the moderating effect of social support on the extent to which self-management and self-efficacy account for the variance of coping behaviors in …

Predictors Of Medication Alternative Cost-Saving Strategies Among Adults With Type 2-Diabetes, Olaseni Solomon Oduwaye

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the United States experience a significant financial burden in managing their condition due to prescription medication, higher out-of-pocket (OOP) costs, number of prescribed medications, and health insurance status to stay compliant with their medications. This study examined the association between the alternative medication cost-saving strategies, including obtaining free samples from doctors or patient assistance programs, splitting pills or changing dosage frequency, purchasing from other countries, purchasing over the internet, and the three independent variables among adults diagnosed with T2D. Reasoned action approach theory helped guide how external factors may influence an alternative medication …

Patient Harm And Malpractice Payments In Inpatient Settings According To Type Of Medication Administration Error, Kalyn Jo Barton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

While preventable, medication administration error rates surpass most estimates and result in poor quality care. Researchers have demonstrated that interventions have been identified, new technology has been deployed, and training and education have increased, yet the errors persist. Researchers have yet been able to establish the most prevalent, harmful, and costly types of medication administration errors. The purpose of this quantitative study was to identify trends in medication administration errors committed in inpatient settings, specific to the type of error, patient outcomes, and malpractice payment amounts. Donabedian’s model for healthcare quality, derived from the three categories of structure, process, and …

Nurse Manager’S Leadership And Communication Skills And A Registered Nurse’S Organizational Citizenship Behavior, Satisfaction, And Intent To Leave, Emmitte J. Hall

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The Veteran’s Health Administration (VHA) is the largest employer of registered nurses in the United States. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing predicts there will be a nursing shortage through the year 2030 and replacing and training each nurse is expensive and negatively impacts patient care. A review of the literature showed organizations with high levels of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) had high levels of job satisfaction, which reduces turnover, but there was no research on the existence and impact of OCB in a federal health care facility, specifically the VHA. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational research was …

Black Hearts Matter: A Comparative Study Of Sociodemographic, Clinical, And Psychosocial Characteristics In Black And White Persons With Heart Failure, Hannah M Anderson Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

Heart failure (HF) is a chronic, progressive, debilitating illness that disproportionately affects Black individuals, often leading to poor quality of life (QOL). Various sociodemographic, clinical, and psychological characteristics are related to QOL in patients with HF. Because most studies do not include representative Black samples or report findings from racial subgroup analyses, these relationships and any existing racial differences are not well understood. The purpose of this descriptive, comparative study was to explore the relationships among sociodemographic, clinical, and psychological characteristics and QOL in patients with HF and to determine if there were racial differences between Black and White individuals. …

Integrating Interpersonal Neurobiology In Healthcare Leadership And Organizations, Lynn Redenbach Jan 2022

Integrating Interpersonal Neurobiology In Healthcare Leadership And Organizations, Lynn Redenbach

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) is an interdisciplinary, science-based field that seeks to understand human reality including the nature of mind, brain, and relationships. IPNB has been used extensively by mental health practitioners as well as child development and parenting experts. While practitioners and scholars have described ways that IPNB can be used in leadership and organizations, there has been no systematic inquiry into the practical and phenomenological experience of this application. IPNB offers an alternative to dominant models of care and leading in healthcare settings and fields, which are characterized by disconnection, objectification, and separation. It offers a relationally centered approach …

Caregivers And Healthcare Providers On Resources, Gaps In Care, And The Value Of Down Syndrome Centers., A. Nicole White

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The facilitation of healthcare for people with Down syndrome offers a unique challenge to healthcare systems. Both caregivers and healthcare providers often need to navigate a complex system of specialties in care, resources, and expertise to optimize treatment and care plans for children with Down syndrome, whose needs vary widely and extend beyond the walls of a hospital. This study identified seven domains of care based on conceptualizations of integrated care in the literature: coordination, communication, continuity, dignity, information, shared decision-making, and resources. Groups of survey items intended to capture these domains were used with a sample of caregivers and …

Locating Uncertainty In Hospital Leader Sensemaking And Sensegiving Of Organizational Change: A Single Case Study, Sara E. Barry Jan 2022

Locating Uncertainty In Hospital Leader Sensemaking And Sensegiving Of Organizational Change: A Single Case Study, Sara E. Barry

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Leaders planning strategic change face significant ambiguity and uncertainty due to the complex, fast-paced, and volatile nature of organizational life. What one leader sees as an opportunity, another may view as a threat depending on their past experiences, their existing mental models, and their perceptions of uncertainty. Sensemaking and sensegiving theories provide a framework for how leaders retrospectively make sense of new and disorienting information through recursive cycles of interpretation, action, and learning, and seek to influence the meaning-making of others towards a shared vision of the strategic change. Despite decades of research using these theories, studies have yet to …

Nurse Managers' Patient Safety Communication, Christine Deatrick Jan 2022

Nurse Managers' Patient Safety Communication, Christine Deatrick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Medical errors are a continuing issue for healthcare organizations and can lead to patient harm or death. To bring about organizational learning and therefore reduce medical errors, information must successfully flow through an organization. Nurse managers play an essential role as the conduit of information between frontline staff and the organization. The primary purpose of this study is to describe the decision-making process of how nurse managers actively select and transmit information on patient safety concerns. A qualitative constructivist grounded theory approach was used. Nineteen unit-level nurse managers, working full-time in an acute care hospital with a minimum of one-year …

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this article is to illustrate the application of an evidence-based, structured performance measurement methodology to identify, prioritize, and (when appropriate) generate new measures of health care quality, using primary care as a case example. Primary health care is central to the health care system and health of the American public; thus, ensuring high quality is essential. Due to its complexity, ensuring high-quality primary care requires measurement frameworks that can assess the quality of the infrastructure, workforce configurations, and processes available. This paper describes the use of the Productivity Measurement and Enhancement System (ProMES) to compile a …

Depression affects over 17 million American adults yearly and has been identified as the leading cause of disability in people between the ages of 15 and 44 years. There is evidence that feeling neglect or a lack of parental attachment during childhood is associated with depression. One construct that has been overlooked is love from a parent. The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between individuals who felt not wanted/loved during adolescence and lifetime depression and to examine this association by gender. We examined 5114 participants aged 24–32 years at Wave IV of the National Longitudinal Study …
