Participation In Curriculum And Cultural Ambassador Group To Enhance Student Belongingness, Jake Tuft, Jacob Schvaneveldt Mar 2022

Participation In Curriculum And Cultural Ambassador Group To Enhance Student Belongingness, Jake Tuft, Jacob Schvaneveldt

Annual Research Symposium

COVID-19 negatively impacted students' abilities to participate in live, in-person events; students were unable to interact with peers or build relationships critical to success and well-being. Quarantine, social distancing and video conferencing did not create this problem however, it simply amplified the fact that dental students seemingly lack camaraderie and a sense of belongingness. The Curriculum and Cultural Ambassador group was created to allow students to bond over shared goals in the hopes of improving their experiences within dental school. This group gives students the ability to “Be the Change” on campus and enact real-time change to foster a sense …

Number Of Active Social Media Users As Predictors Of Hipaa Infringements, Alexander Sheppert, Taylor Purcell, Nathaniel Hill, David Sant

Annual Research Symposium

HIPAA Infringements Correlate Linearly with Number of Social Media Users.

Social media use has made information sharing much easier – including protected health information. Interestingly, as social media has become more popular over the years, HIPAA violations have also become more common.

The calculated R and P values suggest a strong correlation exists between social media use and HIPAA complaints.

Potential Cost Savings With Implementation Of Systemwide Rasburicase Protocol, Parker Gundersen, Adalyn Lee Mar 2022

Potential Cost Savings With Implementation Of Systemwide Rasburicase Protocol, Parker Gundersen, Adalyn Lee

Annual Research Symposium

Purpose: Tumor Lysis Syndrome is a condition that takes place when apoptosis in cancer cells occurs within a short time period. This condition can lead to organ dysfunction and even death. Rasburicase is used to treat high uric acid levels in patients that are experiencing tumor lysis syndrome and is expensive. Dosing and frequency of rasburicase varies across health care institutions. This project evaluated if adherence to a systemwide rasburicase protocol could help reduce drug waste and reduce costs across a healthcare system.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective data analysis reviewing rasburicase doses administered across Intermountain Healthcare over the course …

Evidence-Based Best Practice For Discharge Planning: A Policy Review, Marissa Lewis Mar 2022

Evidence-Based Best Practice For Discharge Planning: A Policy Review, Marissa Lewis

Student Scholarly Projects

Ineffective discharge planning produces poor patient healthcare outcomes, potential adverse events, and medical errors. A primary deterrent to successful discharge planning is communication, either within the interdisciplinary team or during handoff to the receiving transition of care facilities of home health, skilled nursing, or acute rehabilitation.

The purpose of the evaluation project was to determine if current policies, communication tools, and workflows of three healthcare organizations were based on evidence and make recommendations for policy revisions. The Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice for Nurses and Healthcare Professionals Model (JHNEBP) was used with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Policy Process (POLARIS) …

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety

Background: Over the last three decades, the physician assistant (PA) profession has seen an increase in the number of women in the profession, a decline in the age of new PA graduates, a movement toward specialty practice, and an exponential growth in the workforce as a whole. Historically, surveys reveal the majority of PAs are satisfied with their career choice and current job. Although a majority of PAs report high job satisfaction, career burnout is still significant within the profession. Career burnout among health care providers continues to rise due to the strains of the US healthcare system, growing patient …

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety

Background: The healthcare field is experiencing rapid growth in the number of advanced practice providers (APPs) with projections that demonstrate that this trend will only continue. Even though the number of APPs is growing, the development of facility-specific APP management infrastructure often grows at a slower pace. Specific policies and procedures on APP utilization and clinical efficiency metrics are lacking. This can lead to deficiencies in the understanding of the education and practice boundaries of APPs.

Objective: Our study aimed to analyze the growth and utilization of physician assistants (PAs) in several hospitals located within Texas Medical Center (TMC) …

Covid-19 In Older Adults- A Practical Review For Emergency Providers In 2022, Michael L. Malone, Teresita Hogan, Alice Bonner, Kevin Biese, Patti Pagel, Kathleen Unroe

Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine

COVID-19 has posed a considerable threat to all aspects of older Americans’ lives. The pandemic generated acute illness, emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalization, respiratory failure, and death. Pandemic-associated social isolation and loneliness further endangered older adults. Recovery from COVID-19 illness has commonly been followed by chronic symptoms, which may also precipitate ED visits. While vaccination has mitigated risks of serious illness requiring hospitalization, a booster dose is required to sustain protection. New treatments and therapies, including monoclonal antibodies and antiviral agents, have shown efficacy for older adults who are at risk of hospitalization. Older adults remain vulnerable in 2022, after …

Nurse-Driven Protocols For Abdominal Pain In The Emergency Department, Chris Schmidt Mar 2022

Nurse-Driven Protocols For Abdominal Pain In The Emergency Department, Chris Schmidt

Student Scholarly Projects

Practice Problem: Emergency department (ED) crowding hinders the opportunity to deliver safe, quality care to abdominal pain patients and detrimentally affects clinical outcomes. Leadership of a rural community ED recognized a comparable issue by introducing a nurse-driven protocol (NDP) to reduce patient length of stay (LOS) and the rate of patients who leave the department prior to physician evaluation.

PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: For adult patients in an emergency department, how does a nurse-driven protocol for abdominal pain compared to no protocol use affect the LOS and left without being seen (LWBS) rate over 10 …

Graduate Student Research Symposium

At the heart of all Catholic healthcare is the mission and duty to further the healing ministry of Jesus Christ and care for one’s neighbor to uphold human dignity. However, some in Catholic healthcare may not fully know nor understand these foundational Catholic teachings. As such, these healthcare professionals can turn to a simple but rich guide in giving direction to these healthcare professionals, the USCCB’s Ethical and Religious Directives. This document acts as both a primer and set of guidelines regarding Catholic doctrine, the Catholic moral tradition, and how both inform the Catholic response to common ethical concerns. However, …

The Transformational Leader In Nursing Practice – An Approach To Retain Nursing Staff, Anita C. Reinhardt, Teresa G. Leon, Linda Ochart Summers

Administrative Issues Journal

Transformational leaders have been shown to influence positive work environments and support the retention of nursing staff. While exemplars have been found in upper-level management, the implementation of these characteristics in unit-based leaders is less explained. The elements of the transformational leader on followers and the organization—individual consideration, individual stimulation, inspirational motivation, and idealized influence—can engage nursing staff to remain in an organization which will promote positive patient outcomes. This article will review the elements of the transformational leader and share two exemplars of the transformational metanarrative as demonstrated in nursing care units. Both exemplars demonstrate how the transformational leader …

Association Of Electronic Medical Records And Opioid Prescription, Archana Suwal, Jemimah Okonjo, Stacie Deslich, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

A Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) is an electronic database that tracks controlled substance prescriptions in a state. PDMPs can provide health authorities timely information about prescribing and patient behaviors that contribute to the epidemic and facilitate an agile and directed response. Electronic Prescribing for Controlled Substances (EPCS) aimed to eliminate paper prescriptions by allowing clinical prescribers to write prescriptions electronically, making them digital and trackable for both the prescriber and the pharmacist and has been an essential part of any health information technology system, as well as a requirement for 'meaningful use' (Blumenthal & Tavenner, 2010). However, one of …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

After being removed from patient care due to equipment shortages, medical students and new residents around the United States are returning to clinical medicine/acute care settings as the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic continues. We hypothesize that trainees returned with increased preparedness and had better access to and knowledge of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Methods

Anonymous online surveys were distributed via snowball sampling to medical students and residents performing clinical duties in the United States. Respondents completed self-assessments for preparedness regarding PPE use, access to PPE and COVID-19 testing, and access to COVID-19 positive patients. Group comparisons were conducted using chi-square …

Laundry units in hospitals have an essential role in breaking the transmission chain of infection to staff and patients, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. From the observation of the management team, the laundry service at BaliMed Karangasem Hospital needs to be revised. It can be seen from the timely provision of linen and incidents of lost linen, even though interventions have been carried out. Management has yet to realize the process in the laundry unit that depends on the machine, so the machine maintenance process has not been carried out correctly and on schedule. In addition, evaluating service processes has …
