Purpose/Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Rates have steadily increased in recent years due to high rates of obesity, smoking, and sedentary lifestyles. Screening for the disease can lead to early detection and reduced morbidity/mortality, yet screening rates remain low. Existing literature is extensive in discussing methods to increase CRCS adherence; therefore, a scoping review allows for increased understanding of barriers to CRCS and how to address those barriers to increase screening compliance.
Methods A literature search was completed from September 2020 to October 2021. Multiple databases were used, including …
Evaluating Healthcare Leaders: A Competency Assessment Of Rural Healthcare Management Within The Midwest, Heather Winkler
Evaluating Healthcare Leaders: A Competency Assessment Of Rural Healthcare Management Within The Midwest, Heather Winkler
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Rural healthcare facilities, which include critical access hospitals, are vulnerable to closure due to workforce shortages, low patient volumes, challenging payer and patient populations, and geographic isolation. Additionally, many rural communities entered the COVID-19 pandemic understaffed, under-serviced, facing inadequate healthcare infrastructures, and with limited clinical resources and equipment. This exploratory research aimed to measure the leadership competencies identified by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) of healthcare leaders working in rural hospitals and clinics within the Midwest. Having expert leadership skills and competencies can significantly impact how an organization succeeds, both for the patients, staff, and community. In contrast, …

Abstract Purpose/Background Opioids are commonly administered in the perioperative period to manage surgical pain. However, the ongoing opioid epidemic in the United States makes it necessary to evaluate other modalities of pain management that do not cause respiratory depression, nausea, vomiting and addiction. Ketorolac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can manage pain safely and effectively. This scoping review examines the available literature on the effectiveness and feasibility of using ketorolac to minimize perioperative opioid use.
Methods A comprehensive literature review was performed between October 2020 and September 2021 utilizing five scholarly databases: GoogleScholar ™, PubMed, Ovid, Cochrane Library, and …
Reducing Musculoskeletal Injuries In Nurses, Ashlie R. Miller
Reducing Musculoskeletal Injuries In Nurses, Ashlie R. Miller
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Problem: Nurses across the nation are being affected by an epidemic that often leads to severe, chronic pain. This is not an infectious disease, but mass amounts of preventable musculoskeletal injuries caused by repetitive movements such as lifting, repositioning, and transferring patients. These injuries lead to time away from work and increased costs for healthcare facilities. Education on proper lifting techniques provides nurses with the tools to reduce risk for injury.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine if reeducating nurses about proper lifting techniques reduces the occurrence of musculoskeletal injuries.
Methods: This study will be a cross …

Purpose/Background Despite the surge in HCV prevalence among pregnant women and the threat of perinatal HCV transmission, infants exposed to HCV in the United States are inadequately screened (Chappell et al., 2018). It is estimated that between 4% and 8% of babies exposed to HCV during pregnancy become infected (Watts et al., 2017). Incorporating Hep C screening with other mandated prenatal screening will play an essential role in reducing the complications associated with Hep C transmission to the newborn.

This scoping review investigates health disparities to identify interventions that improve mammography rates for women residing in rural areas.
Methods A scoping review was performed using an exclusive search for peer-reviewed mammography and rural health sources. Search phrases included were, ('Mammogram screening in rural areas'), ('Health care disparities in rural areas'), ('Secondary prevention in …
When "First, Do No Harm" Fails: A Restorative Justice Approach To Workgroup Harms In Healthcare, Pedro L. Flores
When "First, Do No Harm" Fails: A Restorative Justice Approach To Workgroup Harms In Healthcare, Pedro L. Flores
Dissertations
In healthcare, workgroup mistreatment is a pervasive problem that begins during medical education (medical and nursing school) and becomes embedded in the “hidden curriculum of professionalism,” which dissuades and even punishes learners for talking about abuse they witness. Furthermore, the mistreatment of healthcare providers (HCPs) pervades all disciplines in the healthcare delivery chain due to a combination of cultural factors, systemic pressures, dysfunctional hierarchies, and leadership’s tolerance of intimidating and disruptive behaviors. Not surprisingly, 18% of U.S. HCPs have left the medical field since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and burnout, stress, anxiety, and increased workloads have been identified …

Appointment Reminder System Benchmark Study, Anthony Rawlinson
Appointment Reminder System Benchmark Study, Anthony Rawlinson
MSN Capstone Projects
The average appointment “no-show” rate is 23% across 105 studies (Dantas et al., 2018). These “no-shows” cost an estimated 150 billion dollars a year to the American healthcare industry (Ruiz-Hernandez et al., 2020). Previous estimates place the cost of one no-show event at a primary office in the range of $125 to $274 (Aysola et al., 2020). These missed appointments not only cause a loss in office revenue, but also harm the patients missing the appointment (Marbouh et al., 2020). Some of the repercussions patients suffer from are longer wait times for appointments, higher Emergency Room (ER) admission rates, and …
A Better Way To Non-Invasively Measure Bilirubin Levels To Protect Infant Health, Kristen Mackeil
A Better Way To Non-Invasively Measure Bilirubin Levels To Protect Infant Health, Kristen Mackeil
Symposium of Student Scholars
Background: Jaundice screening using transcutaneous bilirubin(TcB) monitors often produce inaccurately low results for lighter skin tone newborns and inaccurately high results for darker skin tone newborns. While high jaundice levels for lighter skin tone newborns risk going undetected, darker skin tone newborns receive unnecessary follow up heel sticks for serum bilirubin determination. This is a problem because dangerous jaundice levels may be under or over reported. Additionally, unnecessary heel sticks for darker skin tone newborns increase the risk of complications from puncture and increase newborn discomfort. Performing the heel stick and processing the blood sample also cost nurses and …

Background: The advantages of a specialized training program have led to over 84 postgraduate training programs for Physician Assistants (PAs) covering over 25 specialties. Employee lateral mobility is more prevalent within the PA profession, which allows PA providers to switch between medical specialties. The versatility of PAs promotes higher turnover rates compared to physician counterparts. These high turnover rates can result in increased institutional burden. Postgraduate PA programs provide pre-employment exposure to more in-depth medical training, enabling a well-rounded knowledge base of the PA’s roles and responsibilities, minimizing turnover rates.
Purpose: The goal of this survey study is to identify …

Promoting Psychological Resilience In Healthcare Workers In Times Of Crisis: Lessons Learned From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Callie Shirley
Senior Theses
HIV-related services have been interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic in South Carolina (SC). However, many HIV care facilities demonstrated their organizational resilience in adapting to new challenges. One facilitator of organizational resilience, psychological resilience, has become increasingly studied in the health area during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the heightened burdens placed on healthcare workers. Psychological resilience in regard to healthcare facilities is defined as the ability of the health workforce to adapt to adversity and is beneficial to mental health outcomes of the employees. Current literature on psychological resilience has identified facilitators such as support from leadership, a positive …
