Falls And Traumatic Brain Injury In The Elderly On Aspirin Or Anticoagulant Therapy, Jonathan Bassig, David Nauheim, Stanton Miller, Patricia Williams, Tingting Zhan
Phase 1
Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) after a fall in individuals aged 65 and older is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, but the effect of aspirin and anticoagulant therapy on TBI severity is not fully understood. This study evaluated whether the severity of TBI is associated with use of aspirin or anticoagulant therapy or in combination.
Methods: Using retrospective chart review, we identified patients age 65 or older who fell and sustained head trauma that were admitted to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital trauma service from 2017-2018. Based on final diagnosis, patients were classified into three groups of TBI …

The LGBT EI Thrivers program is a community group that meets monthly to discuss what it means to “thrive” with HIV. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the LGBT EI’s Thrivers program and determine what motivates older individual with HIV to become involved in this program and identify the impact of the program. …

Helping Continuing Care Retirement Communities Determine The Best Level Of Care For Each Patient, Nicholas Safian, Grant Schultheis, Sopuru Ezeonu, Austin Klein, Danielle Snyderman, Md
Phase 1
Background: Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC’s) are long-term care facilities for senior adults where residents can live in different “levels of care” (LOC)––Independent, Assisted, Nursing––depending on their needs. It is beneficial for the CCRC administration to have residents in the appropriate LOC for their given needs. However, the current process for determining which LOC is appropriate for a given resident lacks structure and provides a challenge for administrators. This project seeks to provide CCRC administrators an efficient, structured way for determining which level of care is most appropriate based on the needs of the resident and the resources available from …

Understanding The Context And Social Processes That Shape Person- And Family-Centered Culture In Long-Term Care: The Pivotal Role Of Personal Support Workers, Ellen Helena Melis
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This single, exemplar case study explored the context and social processes that shape person-and family-centered culture in a long-term care (LTC) home, using grounded theory and situational analysis for the data collection and analysis. Findings revealed one core dimension: needing to be heard, valued, and understood, and five key roles: personal support workers (PSWs), executive director (ED), senior leadership, nurse managers, and residents and families, which informed five dimensions, each focused on enhancing care for residents: (a) attending to residents’ daily care needs (PSWs), (b) advocating strategically (ED), (c) translating vision into programs and policies (senior leadership), (d) ensuring quality …

Motor Performance And Quality Of Life In A Community Exercise Program For Parkinson Disease, Elizabeth A. Stiles, Karen M. Jaffe, Catherine E. Schwartz, Benjamin M. Rossi, David E. Riley
2020 Faculty Bibliography
We investigated the effect of a comprehensive community program composed of exercise, mindfulness practice, and education on motor function and quality of life in individuals with Parkinson disease (PD). Thirty-six participants completed physical and quality-of-life assessments independently at baseline and 12 months. Physical assessments showed stability or improvement in functional mobility, integrated strength, and walking ability over the 1-year interval. PDQ-39 measures showed improvement in 6 of 8 indices: mobility, activities of daily living, emotional well-being, stigma reduction, social support, and bodily discomfort. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of exercise, mindfulness, and education in community and group settings.
