Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between obesity and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) was controversial, which may be due to the crudeness definition of obesity based on body mass index (BMI). As obesity and metabolic abnormalities often coexist, we aimed to explore whether the classification of obesity based on metabolic status can help to evaluate the real impact of obesity on the readmission of NHL.

METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, utilizing the 2018 Nationwide Readmissions Database, we identified NHL-related index hospitalizations and followed them for non-elective readmission. The patients with NHL were classified as metabolically healthy non-obese (MHNO) and obese (MHO) and metabolically …

BACKGROUND: Individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) have an increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), but questions remain about the underlying pathology. Identifying which CAD loci are modified by T2D in the development of subclinical atherosclerosis (coronary artery calcification [CAC], carotid intima-media thickness, or carotid plaque) may improve our understanding of the mechanisms leading to the increased CAD in T2D.

METHODS: We compared the common and rare variant associations of known CAD loci from the literature on CAC, carotid intima-media thickness, and carotid plaque in up to 29 670 participants, including up to 24 157 normoglycemic controls and 5513 …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative disorder, and is the leading cause of dementia worldwide. It has been posited that AD is caused by the gradual deposition of toxic amyloid-b (Ab) plaques in the brain- that cause oxidative stress and eventually leads to neuronal death and synaptic loss. However, multiple therapies that either interfere with the production, or enhance the removal of Ab from the brain, have ultimately failed to slow or prevent AD. With the ever-increasing burden of AD worldwide, there exists an urgent need for novel therapeutic targets. The adult human brain is an energy demanding …

Severe Hyponatremia Associated With Partial Empty Sella Syndrome, Lily Chen, Shyama Appareddy, Laura Garcia Oct 2023

Severe Hyponatremia Associated With Partial Empty Sella Syndrome, Lily Chen, Shyama Appareddy, Laura Garcia

Research Colloquium

Hyponatremia, serum sodium concentration < 135 mmol/L, is further classified by patient volume status. Symptoms are dependent on the acuity of sodium loss. Acute onset hyponatremia can present with confusion, disorientation, headache, agitation, vomiting, and lethargy. Patients with hyponatremia warrant a thorough workup and can be a leading manifestation of hypopituitarism in the geriatric population. A 77 year old patient, history of pituitary adenoma, presented with generalized symptoms of fatigue, gait instability, poor appetite and confusion associated with severe hyponatremia and hypoglycemia. The patient has a history of pituitary adenoma treated with cabergoline, hypothyroidism treated with levothyroxine and gonadal insufficiency treated with testosterone, with no reported history of diuretic use. On admission, the patient had a sodium level of 116 mmol/L. While the patient reported improvement in symptoms, patient’s confusion was noted to persist despite appropriate correction of sodium and glucose. Patient had an AM cortisol of 4 mcg/dL. Cosyntropin test was conducted and noted to be negative. MRI Brain with Gadolinium revealed empty sella turcica with a small amount of enhancing pituitary tissue, which may indicate a response to previous cabergoline therapy. Despite negative cosyntropin results, the patient was suspected to have relative adrenal insufficiency due to multiple acute stressors including illness, hospitalization, disruption of routine and abrupt smoking cessation. Patient was given a trial of hydrocortisone with improvements noted in his mental status, strength and appetite. Thus, careful consideration should be given towards adrenal insufficiency secondary to hypopituitarism as an etiology for severe hyponatremia.

Penile Calciphylaxis In An End Stage Renal Disease Patient., Juan Enrique Garcia Lopez, Alain Velazquez Blanco, Aileen Aguilar, Sareena Siyas, Daniel Ibarias Paz, Mays Abdulazeez, Jesus Garza-Tamez, Desmond Adamu

Research Colloquium

Background: Penile Calciphylaxis occurs in about 1–4% of hemodialysis patients worldwide. Associated mortality rates are very high, and hyperparathyroidism is the second most frequently associated disorder. Addressing the resulting metabolic imbalance, and surgical intervention guided by findings of radiological studies may improve quality of life. The pathogenesis is thought to be mediated by vascular smooth muscle cells which differentiate into osteoblast-like cells. Decrease in vascular calcification inhibitory proteins fetuin-A and matrix Gla is found in patients on dialysis causing systemic medial calcification of arterioles, leading to epidermal ischemia, tissue infarction, and ulceration.

Case presentation: 47-year-old male with history of coronary …

Journal Articles

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gestational diabetes is more common in many first-generation immigrant women in Europe and other Western countries. Less is known about second-generation immigrant women; such knowledge is needed to understand generational influences on diabetes risk. We aimed to study second-generation immigrant women regarding the presence of all types of diabetes during pregnancy.

METHODS AND RESULTS: A cohort study was conducted using the Swedish National Birth Register, the National Patient Register, and the total Population Register. We used Cox regression analysis to compute hazard ratios (HRs) and 99% confidence intervals (99% CI) for any diabetes during pregnancy and specific …

Human Movement Sciences & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the experiences of type 1 diabetics in integrated physical education classes. In this study, we interviewed young type 1 diabetic adults and asked them to reflect on their school-based physical education experiences. An interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) approach was adopted to guide data collection, analysis, and interpretation for this retrospective study. Eight participants (ages 19 to 32) were enrolled in this study, and semi-structured interviews focused on their physical education experiences acted as the primary data. Transcribed interview data were analyzed using an IPA approach. Three interrelated themes emerged …

Research Symposium

Background: Exposure to sunlight is essential to produce Vitamin D (ViD). Recent studies suggest obesity is associated with low ViD concentration. Living in South Texas with 220 sunny days a year should be enough to maintain adequate ViD levels. We aimed to analyze ViD levels and obesity in children and adolescents.

Methods: We included 1239 pediatric (1.5 to 18.8 years old) participants (primary care clinic from Laredo) with registered CDC percentiles of BMI (pBMI) and serum concentrations of ViD (Atellica™). Data are described as median (p25, p75), Loess correlation between pBMI and ViD, ANCOVA to adjust by age, sex, and …
