Understanding The Experiences Of Latino Medical Students In A Learning Medical Environment, Leslie García Jan 2023

Understanding The Experiences Of Latino Medical Students In A Learning Medical Environment, Leslie García

Dissertations and Theses

Very little is known about the experiences and perceptions of underrepresented minority (URiM) medical students in the U.S. allopathic medical schools. The limited literature posits URiMs experience more adverse experiences in the learning environment and have different learning outcomes in comparison to their White peer counterparts. Latino medical students represent 7.1% of all entering medical students across all U.S. medical schools. While they represent the largest ethnic minority in the United States within parity lack representation among the physician workforce [sic]. There is a dearth of knowledge of what factors contribute to the success of Latino medical students progressing in …

A Narrative Review Of Student Evaluations Of Teaching In Decolonial Praxis: Implications For Occupational Therapy Higher Education, Fatima Hendricks, Michaele Singleton, Asia Clark, Marina Mishin, Marissa Epps

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Student evaluations of teaching (SETs) are the primary source for evaluating teaching effectiveness and are used for deciding tenure and promotion. However, as efforts to engage in a decolonial critique of higher education amplify, the use of SETs in teaching and learning requires scrutiny. A narrative review was used to address the research question of SET biases in decolonial praxis and what insights may be useful for OT decolonial praxis. We identify and describe two content areas: (a) SET biases and (b) recommendations for alternatives promoting OT decolonial praxis. A total of 92 articles were sourced from five databases. Of …

One in 54 individuals is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Swimming can impact the physical and mental well-being of persons with ASD, which in turn may improve their caregivers’ well-being. The purpose of this qualitative evaluation study is to assess the necessity, acceptability, feasibility, fidelity, and beginning effectiveness of a 12-session swimming training program (STP) at an indoor university pool designed to teach persons with ASD how to swim, and to teach caregivers precautions for safety around water. Participants included 7 boys, and 3 girls with ASD [mean age 7.05 years (SD 1.17)] and their caregivers. Results indicated that …

Enhancing The Quality Of Life For Senior Citizens: A Facilitator’S Guidebook For Mindful Music And Movement, Shannon Sexton Jan 2023

Enhancing The Quality Of Life For Senior Citizens: A Facilitator’S Guidebook For Mindful Music And Movement, Shannon Sexton

Mindfulness Studies Theses

Music appreciation and enjoyment enhance well-being throughout the lifespan. The challenges and constraints that people experience as they age can lead to lack of access to music, decreased physical activity, and fewer avenues for creative expression. Group music and movement interventions created for older populations offer opportunities for social connection and improved quality of life. Mindful practices add further benefit when combined with these interventions. Current available programs are scarce and most often do not encompass mixed modalities. In addition, the benefits of these programs do not show long-term sustainability. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the effects …

Journal of Dietetic Education

Micronutrients are key components of various physiological processes. In Ghana, micronutrient deficiencies are common and medical resources are limited. Biochemical markers of nutrition status are costly and require specialized medical equipment. In the absence of available biochemical markers of nutrition status, the micronutrient-directed nutrition-focused physical exam is a viable tool. This mixed-methods research aimed to determine whether a two-day virtual workshop for Ghanaian nutrition professionals (N=131) would improve perceptions regarding the usefulness and self-efficacy of the micronutrient-directed nutrition-focused physical exam. Quantitative data were collected via a virtual pretest (immediately prior to the workshop) and a virtual posttest (immediately following the …

Integration Of Disability Studies And Culinary Instruction Into Nutrition Curriculum Development, Joanne Sullivan, Regina Subach, Janice Goldschmidt

Journal of Dietetic Education

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is currently promoting the advancement of cultural humility as a means for nutritional professionals to better appreciate the lived experience and identities of others as well as the power dynamics that create health inequalities. At the same time, the Academy has struggled to advance services to underserved populations such as those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and autism spectrum disorder. Here the authors argue that both goals can be achieved by involving nutrition students in the teaching of food preparation skills to individuals with IDD. Dietetic students emerge with an enhanced understanding of …

Navigating The Adoption Of Interprofessional Education As A Performance Standard In Dietetics Education, Paige Whitney, Mary Ann Kluge

Journal of Dietetic Education

Abstract: The purpose of this collective case study was to explore the diffusion of interprofessional education (IPE) in response to specific Future Education Model (FEM) Graduate Program accreditation standards and performance indicators. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 12 FEM program directors from geographically diverse US states. Website and document review were triangulated with the interview data, and Roger’s Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) was used as a theoretical framework to add dimension to the study. Three themes emerged from analysis: 1) Accreditation standards are not the driving force of IPE; 2) Program Directors can serve …

Development Of A Micro-Credential Curriculum: The Interprofessional Dementia Caregiving Telehealth Community Practicum Badge, Susan L. Wenker, Chinh Kieu, Tracy Schroepfer, Kristen Felten, Kathleen Smith, Hossein Khalili

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Informal dementia caregiving by family caregivers is a crucial component of the care provided to people living with dementia (PLwD). The numbers of these family caregivers are rapidly increasing at a time, when in the U.S., the availability of formal caregivers is decreasing. Currently, health professional training focuses on providing care to PLwD and not necessarily addressing the caregiver’s needs, and this training takes place within professional silos and not interprofessionally. This study sought to address this issue by: 1) examining the current state of interprofessional dementia caregiving trainings in the US; and 2) developing a micro-credential curriculum called …

Preparing Faculty Using An Assessment For How Clinical Laboratory Students Learn, Maryanne Stewart, Ronette Chojnacki

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Students interpret and learn information in different ways. Whether students develop deep or surface learning depends in large part on the transmission of information from their educator, which activates their domains of learning. Knowing students’ learning styles as either visual, auditory, psychomotor, or mixed, professors can develop teaching resources that benefit the learning diversity of their students by using different instructional delivery methods. This study examines survey results for how students learn best to enhance the student experience within the Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) program at a university in Detroit, MI, USA. Method: To determine the resources needed …

Using Doctoral Education And Research-Based Learning To Advance The Nurse Leader, Kara R. De La Fosse

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

Nurse leaders perform in highly autonomous positions in two dimensions; academia, and the clinical setting with the awesome responsibility to serve and protect others. To guide nursing practice, research-based skills are crucial to ensure leadership decisions are founded in evidence-based practice. Random controlled studies are gold-standard in healthcare compared to correlation or descriptive studies and employ a systematic review to strengthen findings (Schmidt & Brown, 2021). Research skills are prominent in numerous components of the leadership scope to perform at a stellar level.
