International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Females are more likely to suffer Achilles tendon injury that consequently leads to more complications including pain or tendon rupture, and experiencing fewer benefits from therapeutic interventions. There is a lack of knowledge on how estrogen, which may limit collagen synthesis, can affect tendon health and growth. PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between menstruation duration and cross-sectional area (CSA) of the Achilles tendon over a 5-month period of intensive dance training. We hypothesize the female dancers who reported a menstruation duration of 1-3 days will have the smallest average tendon CSA in comparison …

Persistent quadriceps dysfunction following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) may lead to further pathological complication. Quadriceps weakness has been linked to corticospinal excitability. However, it remains unclear how this altered corticospinal excitability contributes to ACLR patients during knee strength tasks when compared to healthy controls. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine force reproduction strategies during isometric knee extension between ACLR patients and healthy controls. METHODS: Five ACLR (20.40±1.67yrs, 72.12±12.87kg, 171.07±7.40cm) participants and five matched healthy controls (21.00±1.73yrs, 65.77±13.61kg, 166.62±11.99cm) performed an isometric force reproduction task. They were instructed to maintain 10% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) …

Social Jetlag Inhibits Exercise-Induced Adaptations In The Heart And Alters Markers Of Mitochondrial Dynamics, Graham R. Mcginnis, Michael B. Dial, Elias M. Malek, Greco Neblina, Austin Cooper, Nikoleta Vasileva, Tanner Erwin
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Social jetlag (SJL), or the shifting of behavior and sleep times between weekdays and weekends, is a pervasive form of circadian rhythm disruption that affects nearly 70% of the population to some extent. The magnitude of SJL can be determined by the difference in the mid-sleep phase between weekends and weekdays. Higher levels of SJL have been associated with lower levels of cardiorespiratory fitness, and increased incidence of cardiometabolic disease, which may be due, in part, to mitochondrial dysfunction. However, no studies to date have evaluated the effects of long term SJL on cardiac mitochondrial dynamics. PURPOSE: To determine …
Effects Of Partial Hot Water Immersion On Postprandial Blood Glucose And Heart Rate Variability, Jeff Moore, Michael Buono
Effects Of Partial Hot Water Immersion On Postprandial Blood Glucose And Heart Rate Variability, Jeff Moore, Michael Buono
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The acute effects of heat therapy on glycemic markers oppose those of the chronic effects. While the postprandial glucose response is exaggerated during whole body heat exposure, chronic heat exposure lowers HbA1c. Additionally, the acute effects of heat therapy differ depending on the amount of body exposed to heat. Heating a single hand does not increase fasting glucose and lowers postprandial glucose. The opposing effects of partial and whole body heat exposure could be mediated in part from increased sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity following heat stress. While heating the body increases muscular blood flow and glucose uptake, SNS activation …

Validation Of Vertical Force Measures During Hop Tasks Using Pressure Insoles, Andrew Cho, Erin Cagle, Sylwia Lipior, Susan Sigward
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Assessment of vertical ground reaction forces (vGRF) during jumping and landing tasks is commonly used as a tool to quantify limb loading following injury. While embedded force plates are the current gold standard, cost and poor ecological validity limit their feasibility for assessment of loading during sport agility tasks. Wearable pressure insoles can measure plantar pressure wirelessly and may provide an alternative for on-field assessments. Previous studies have assessed the validity of insoles with varying results. Few studies have considered tasks that require both vertical and horizontal forces similar to those required for agility tasks. This may have important implications …

The Lived Experience Of Second-Degree Nursing Students’ Anxiety Before And During Their Initial Clinical Rotation, Shelly Wheatley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Anxiety in nursing students can impact learning. Literature has shown that nursing students, especially those in second-degree nursing programs, report higher stress levels compared to other undergraduate students (Penprase & Koczara, 2009). Nursing clinicals can be jarring for students and present many stressors that can impeded learning and cause poor clinical performance. Much research has been done about traditional undergraduate students’ feelings of anxiety. There is a noted gap in research of second-degree, accelerated nursing students and their feelings about their initial clinical placement. Comparisons have often been made between traditional and nontraditional students, but the lived experiences of second-degree …

Differential Contribution Of Cardiac And Peripheral Blood Flow To Metaboreceptor-Mediated Pressor Responses In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Matthew Pizano Gomez, Gabriel B. Carlota, Stephanie S. Wang, Areum K. Jensen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience a higher prevalence of hypertension than the general population. Abnormal blood pressure (BP) response to acute exercise is seen in hypertension. BP response evoked during exercise is the outcome of a central interaction between neural inputs such as the exercise pressor reflex. However, it is unclear if this neurocardiovascular interaction is altered differently to regulate BP during exercise in ASD. PURPOSE: To determine whether contributions of cardiac and peripheral blood flow to metaboreceptor-mediated pressor responses are different during exercise in ASD. METHODS: 21 young adults with and without ASD completed the study. …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
It is well documented that prehypertension is associated with increased risk of developing into the future hypertension and cardiovascular events. Exercise is well known as one of the best nonpharmacological treatments for prehypertension to prevent future hypertension development. Blood flow restriction (BFR) training have been known to improve health-related components of physical fitness such as body composition, muscular strength and endurance, and aerobic capacity. However, there is still paucity of research that BFR exercise induces postexercise hypotension. PURPOSE: accordingly, the goal of this study was to assess that BFR exercise is more effective in reducing blood pressure (BP) compared to …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Characterizing exercise gas exchange response dynamics reveals important information about physiological control processes and cardiopulmonary dysfunction. However, current methods for extracting exercise response dynamics typically use multiple step-wise transitions, limiting applicability of this technique. PURPOSE: We designed a new protocol (chirp waveform) to extract exercise gas exchange response dynamics in a single visit. We tested the hypothesis that gas exchange response dynamics extracted from chirp forcing would be similar to those extracted from step-wise transitions. METHODS: Thirty-one participants (14 young healthy, 7 older healthy, and 10 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) visited the laboratory on three occasions. …

Low back injury is a common concern in golfers and caddies. The literature often points to the biomechanics of the golf swing as the major contributing factor; however, golfers and caddies can regularly walk upward of 10,000 steps on uneven terrain while carrying equipment, which can contribute to the cumulative load on the low back. PURPOSE: To examine the low back biomechanical demands during golf equipment carriage and pick-up tasks. METHODS: Sixteen golfers (11M/5F, 27.4±3.5yrs) participated in 3D motion capture of a golf bag pick-up task and 3 walking tasks (1. unloaded walking [UW], 2. unilateral carrying on …

The loss of muscle mass and function (sarcopenia) afflicts 11-74% of all aging adults, with prevalence increasing with age. Exercise training is clearly effective in preventing or attenuating sarcopenia. The cellular mechanisms of exercise’s protective effects are not entirely clear, but AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is thought to play an important role, in part by regulating gene expression. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of chronic pharmacological AMPK activation on skeletal muscle gene expression in sarcopenic muscle. METHODS: 24-month-old C57Bl/6J mice received either one acute injection or chronic daily saline injections of the AMPK-activating drug AICAR for 31 days. …
