"Why Does This Have To Be So Hard?": Perinatal Experiences From An Ecological Systems Approach, Caitlin Senk
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This study examines the lived experience of the perinatal population to understand how they can be supported from the lens of different ecological systems and what counselors can do to better serve people with uteruses during their perinatal experience. Furthermore, this study aims to utilize an inclusive framework for capturing the perinatal experience of people with uteruses and to explore barriers and facilitators to care through an ecological systems framework. Fifteen participants who have experienced infertility, conception, pregnancy, miscarriage, childbirth, stillbirth, and postpartum were recruited through various means throughout the United States. Thematic analysis was used, with semi-structured interviews and …
Evaluating Native American Serving Nontribal Institutions (Nasnti) Admissions Criteria To Create An Inclusive Nursing Workforce, Tori Stanek
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The national nursing shortage is projected to increase as the bulk of the United States population ages out of the workforce and is likely to require more age-related healthcare services. The lack of ethnic, racial, and gender-based diversity in the current workforce exacerbates this shortage, and the need for a diversified workforce acknowledged by governing nursing bodies from as early as 2011 is still largely unmet. This study looks to nursing programs—specifically their application processes—as one factor that contributes to workforce disparities. Guided by several tenets of Tribalcrit Theory (Brayboy, 2005) and the Triarchic Theory of Intelligence (Sternberg, 1985), this …

Implementation Of A Targeted “Micro-Learning” Inpatient Diabetes Education Program In A Rural Hospital Setting, Melissa Lynn Fannon-Wisner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction/Background: Diabetes affects a large portion of Americans and West Virginians annually. Inpatient hospitalization provides an opportunity to provide evidence-based diabetes education to patients. A lack of access to diabetes education at rural hospitals across the United States exists, creating a need for patients who require education while hospitalized. An intervention needs to be explored to bridge the gap for patients that need education when the diabetes educator is not available.
Purpose: The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project is to create and implement a video micro-learning diabetic education series that can be utilized for diabetes self-management …

Are They Well? Examining Emotional Intelligence Competencies Of Female College Athletes, Anne E. Funke
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
In this dissertation, I explore the emotional intelligence (EQ) competencies of 19 female student-athletes at one Division III institution. College students are suffering from a collective brain health crisis in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic (United States Department of Health and Human Services, 2021). Students’ social and emotional needs and skills have continued to steadily decline. Colleges have a responsibility to prioritize the social-emotional health of all students above performance and achievement. Student-athletes in particular face unique challenges and pressures that non-athlete students do not. Managing time commitments of athletic schedules and coursework, navigating publicity and increased attention, and …
Teaching Cultural Humility Practices In Appalachia: The Value Of Conducting Conversations Based In Education, Bailey A. Riggs
Teaching Cultural Humility Practices In Appalachia: The Value Of Conducting Conversations Based In Education, Bailey A. Riggs
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent literature highlights the paradigm shift from utilizing cultural competence practices to cultural humility practices within the field of occupational therapy, and health sciences (Fisher- Borne, et al., 2015). The idea of cultural competency suggests that culture is unchanging, and individuals can master cultural knowledge. The perception of knowing culture can be perceived as an unwillingness to learn about culture. In contrast, cultural humility promotes the value of lifelong learning and introspection, encouraging greater self-awareness, reflection of personal biases, and recognition of power imbalances. This approach aims to better integrate educational approaches to serve diverse populations in a culturally affirming …

Dissertations
Problem
During the COVID-19 crisis, particularly in the context of Saudi education, the ability to physically attend schools and colleges was greatly hindered due to the widespread transmission of the virus and the resulting obstacles. The issues necessitated the use of crisis management strategies. Some Saudi universities are capable of implementing an organized plan both before to and during crisis management, whereas others lack this competence. This is a substantial problem. Several universities in Saudi Arabia effectively managed the COVID-19 epidemic, whereas others did not. Furthermore, prior studies on crisis management indicate that administrators exhibit diverse responses. By participating in …

Master's Projects
Sensory modulation is critical for self-regulation in learning environments where children may experience unexpected or atypical sensory stimuli leading to disruptive behaviors often misunderstood or misinterpreted by teachers (Mac Donald & Baist, 2021; Smith & Douglass, 2022). Teachers often lack understanding of sensory processing and evidence-based strategies to address the behavioral challenges related to sensory processing (Cahill et al., 2014; Gee & Nwora, 2011; Mac Donald & Baist, 2021). Occupational therapists practitioners (OTPs) are beneficial team members that are skilled in addressing sensory processing (Cahill, 2010) and can partner with teachers to increase their understanding and utilization of sensory processing …
