Intramural activity programs, as employed in the modern American high school, represent a very recent and fast growing development. In early colonial days youth was necessarily absorbed in helping to build a new nation out of the wilderness. Clearing forests, building homes, and handling heavy chores were some of the tasks of which youths were an important part. They had little leisure time for play. In the modern age of today, with its frontiers established, students who are attending high school have ample leisure time for play. Every state has a compulsory school attendance law, and yet at any time during the school year approximately 12 percent of the children will not be in school - cannot very well be in school, because of some physical, mental, or emotional handicap, either temporary or permanent.

These absentees are what are now often called the “exceptional” children, including the blind and partially-blind, the deaf and hard-of-hearing, the speech-defective, the crippled, the delicate, the epileptic, the mentally deficient, those with serious social maladjustments, together with those who are temporarily out of school because of a disease or accident. It was the purpose of this study to compare the responses of a group of stutterers on the Rosenzweig Picture-Frustration Study with the norms established for that study to determine whether, as a group, they show any significant differences in (1) the direction of aggression, and (2) the type of reaction to frustration.
