This paper presents a study of comparative achievement of practical nurses who have progressed on the career ladder through the use of challenging examination with those in core curriculum. Questionnaires and site evaluations determined the more effective method of career mobility. A core program with minimum expectations for the practical and associate degree nurse was developed.

Recommendations included evaluation of the program and additional study to develop career mobility for the associate degree nurse.

Why should family planning be taught to slow learners at the junior high school level? This question can be answered only by those who are aware of the problems of overpopulation and characteristics of slow learners that directly influence childbearing. Population education, which is being promoted by persons alarmed by rapid population expansion, is an area in which a great many subject matter fields can share responsibility. It appears that home economics can make a unique contribution through teaching family planning.

Health education is a process which effects changes in the health practices of people and in the knowledge and attitudes related to such changes. Education is an internal process for the individual concerned. He educates himself, even though his education is assisted by such means as contacts with health workers, appeals directed to him, information made available, clarification of issues, alternatives, and consequences as a basis for a rational choice. Education thus places responsibility on the individual and is essentially different from a compliance approach. It involves motivation, communication and decision-making. Charles Knightstep was born in Jackson County, WV, but resided in Mason County WV, for the majority of his life. Mr. Knightstep reminiscences about his life growing up on a farm. He describes the process of drying fruits and vegetables and burying apples and potatoes for use during the winter. He explains how his grandmother and mother made lye soap, cottage cheese, and apple butter. He also describes courting his wife and visiting her by horse and buggy. Mr. Knightstep worked for the Kanawha and Michigan railroad beginning in 1915, when he was 15 years old. He describes the changes …

Beulah McKeand grew up in the Ceredo-Kenova area of West Virginia. During her interview, she focuses on her childhood experiences and family history. She discusses working at Abbotts, a store in Huntington, West Virginia. She also focuses on folk medicine, specifically uses for yellow root and ginseng. In the audio clip provided, Mrs. McKeand discusses growing ginseng and the market value for the plant.

Dr. Don V. Hatton was a physician and public health specialist in both West Virginia and Kentucky beginning in the 1930s. During his interview, Dr. Hatton discusses Appalachia and focuses on the definition of the region and what it means to be Appalachian. He also discusses his transition from being a public health specialist focused on preventative medicine to a practicing internal medicine physician. The subject of psychiatric diagnosis and the ramifications of a person being labeled as "mentally ill" has attracted increased attention in the past decade. Personal testimony from psychiatric patients about the difficulty in securing employment, returning to familiar abodes, and re-entering a scholastic environment because of rejection by "normal" society, has been documented in confidential case files, witnessed by friends and relatives, and published for lay consumption (Rubin, 1960; Salinger, 1951; and Green, 1964). Other literature has been devoted to the apparently negative psychological aspects of being an in-patient in a mental institution (Caudwill, 1958; Goffman, 1961; and Gordon, 1971). …

A project using parent seminars in aiding parents of children with seizure disorders was designed at the request of Dr. James R. Schimschock, pediatric neurologist and director of the Clinic for Neurologically Impaired Children, Good Samaritan Hospital and Medical Center. The clinic provides a diagnostic and educational therapy for neurologically impaired children. In addition to providing multidiscipline diagnostic evaluation, clinic services include operating classrooms for preschool and school-age children. Virginia continued to set hospital and health education trends with the establishment of the Department of Medicine in Richmond, later known as the School of Medicine, in 1837. The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine possible corrective methods for inverted vision. The visual problem is usually outgrown in the early teens, but these children who experience the problem tend to be classified as retarded because they cannot read. An intensive research of the literature for possible causes and corrective methods revealed inconclusive proof. However, two boys who were diagnosed to have inverted vision were given perceptual training exercises. The subjects responded to the treatment and in a short time were started on a reading readiness program. Although only two cases were found on which to experiment, …
