The purpose of this study was to construct a valid and reliable comprehensive instrument entitled the Clinical Education Inventory (CEI) that measures nursing students' perceptions of clinical nursing education. The comprehensive instrument developed during this study evaluates multiple facets of clinical nursing education and reduces the need to survey the students using several tools each semester. Ill The method for this study was adapted from the work ofDeVellis (1991) for scale development. Public schools and community health organizations have created partnerships to provide mental health services to children. One such collaboration has led to the development of School-Based Health Centers (SBHC). SBHC provide mental health services in an attempt to enhance students' development and performance. The research findings regarding SBHC impact on school performance are mixed (Gall, Pagano, Desmond, Perrin, & Murphy, 2000; McCord, Klein, Foy, & Fothergill, 1993; Weist, Proescher, Freedman, Paskewitz, & Flaherty, 1995; Wolk & Kaplan, 1993 ). Factors Affecting School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists’ Use Of Language Assessment Practices With Bilingual Children, Lena Gloria Caesar

The purpose of this study was to identify the assessment procedures and practices of school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) employed in the state of Michigan. A survey method was used to gather information from 409 SLPs regarding the assessment procedures used for assessing both their bilingual students, as well as their monolingual English-speaking students. The survey also gathered information regarding perceptions about language proficiency, professional training, and bilingual assessment products. In order to analyze factors related to their use of recommended practices, the study investigated the relationship between selected demographic, caseload, and work-setting variables, and the type of bilingual assessment methods …

Can Professional Development Programs Help Close The Achievement Gap?, C. Jayne Brahler

This paper explores the question of whether it is possible to design professional development programs for teachers that can significantly improve student test results and reduce the achievement gap for students.

The Dayton (Ohio) Foundation and the Montgomery County (Ohio) Educational Service Center, sponsors of The Miami Valley Teacher/Leadership Academy, answer this question with a resounding yes. Recent results indicate that the academy's two-year program, designed to provide professional development to help improve student test scores, not only succeeded in significantly improving the student proficiency mean score, but also considerably reduced the achievement gap for participating students.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare student anxiety level in computerand cadaver-based anatomy instruction. Design and Setting: The study used a preinstruction and post-instruction survey design. This study took place in a generic classroom setting, where instruction focused on computer-generated laboratory models of human anatomy and cadaveric instruction of human anatomy. Subjects: The subjects were 29 students from the Entry-Level Athletic Training Education Program at Indiana State University. Measurements: Science anxiety was measured before and after laboratory instruction. Results: The cadaver-based instruction group showed no statistical difference in their anxiety level (pre12.3±6.7, post13.0±5.1), however, the computer-based instruction …

However, academic success measured, in part by these variables have not been used to predict clinical job placement. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine if academic predictors exist for classifying students in employment settings following completion of a Masters degree from an accredited Graduate Athletic Training Education Program. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships of the counseling/social work trainee spirituality and religion/spirituality awareness to trainee self-efficacy in counseling clients with religious/spiritual issues or backgrounds. In addition, the study explored the influence of demographic variables on spirituality, religion/spirituality awareness, and self-efficacy including: (a) religious/spiritual affiliation (Christian, Non-Christian), (b) ethnicity (Caucasian, Non-Caucasian), (c) training/accreditation program affiliation, (d) gender, and (e) age.

Correlates Of Depression In Young Adult Caregivers, Mark Gillen

This research examined depression in young adult caregivers. It was hypothesized that levels of depression in 18 to 40 year olds who provided care to older adult family members would be similar to depression levels of middle age adult caregivers. This study also examined the relationship between depression, gender, employment, physical health, and relationships. Participants included 172 young adult caregivers that were employees of one of three mid-west universities or colleges. All employees in the young adult age range were contacted and provided with a survey packet. The survey included the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and predictor …

The development of contemporary neuroscience techniques has provided professionals in mental health fields with insight into the human brain and its functions. Literature searches revealed that there is very little research being conducted or existing literature that discusses the physiological response in the brain to the art therapy process. A more comprehensive understanding of the brain’s response to making art could enhance art therapists’ capacity to provide the most suitable treatment to meet the clients’ needs. Exploring Visual Journaling In A Graduate Art Therapy Program, Kathryn E. Dunn

This study explored visual journaling in the Graduate Art Therapy Program at Eastern Virginia Medical School, using a Participatory Action Research model. Eight students, from the art therapy class of 2004, and four faculty members volunteered and participated. Two complete cycles of inquiry were completed and changes were implemented within the program based on researcher collaboration with student and faculty stakeholders. Data consisted of questionnaires, magazine collages, and discussion material. Questionnaire and discussion data were analyzed by the researcher using direct question analysis. Measuring Spelling Growth Over Time In Elementary Writing Samples, Pamela M. Ansell

Developmental spelling stage theories have been proposed and disputed for 30 years. The current study used Gentry's (1982) model to assign category ratings to narrative writing samples produced by 32 students over two years to observe developmental growth over time. In addition, quantitative measures were obtained from the samples, including an index of control (Laminack & Wood, 1996) and a percentage correct. Analyses were also used to test the effectiveness of using a writing lab approach (Nelson, Bahr & Van Meter, 2004) on spelling development. Exercise-induced asthma (EIA) is a common disorder that occurs in individuals who compete in recreational activities. The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge of EIA for high school athletic coaches. A 22 question demographic instrument was used for background information, and an 18 question multiple-choice assessment was used to assess knowledge of prevention, recognition and management of EIA. A panel of experts reviewed and modified the survey instruments, which were piloted at a local private high school prior to distribution. The purpose of this study is to provide a microanalysis of differences in adaptive functioning seen between well-matched groups of school-aged children with autism and those diagnosed as having Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, all of whom functioned in the mild to moderate range of intellectual impairment. Findings indicate that the major area of difference between children with autism and those with Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, was expressive communication; specifically, the use of elaborations in syntax and morphology and in pragmatic use of language to convey and to seek information in discourse.
