Speech-Language Pathology Students’ Perceptions Of An Ipe Stroke Workshop: A One-Year Follow Up, Sarah E. Wallace Mar 2017

Speech-Language Pathology Students’ Perceptions Of An Ipe Stroke Workshop: A One-Year Follow Up, Sarah E. Wallace

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Interprofessional education (IPE) activities are increasingly included in speech-language pathology (SLP) curriculum; however, little is known about IPE’s impact on students’ clinical experiences. Additionally, few studies have examined students’ perceptions of IPE Competency Domains across a program of study or within specific IPE activities. For this initial study, qualitative and quantitative analyses of 24 SLP students’ survey responses one year after an IPE Stroke Workshop highlighted the value of IPE. Students emphasized the importance of hands on and real life activities as part of interprofessional learning. Additionally, their responses suggest that multiple IPE Competency Domains may be addressed within a …

Learning In Motion: Teachers‟ Perspectives On The Impact Of Stationary Bike Use In The Classroom, Julie Lynn Mueller, Amanda Wudarzewski, Yoad Avitzur Mar 2017

Learning In Motion: Teachers‟ Perspectives On The Impact Of Stationary Bike Use In The Classroom, Julie Lynn Mueller, Amanda Wudarzewski, Yoad Avitzur

Education Faculty Publications

The potential of physical activity to support self-regulated learning in the classroom has encouraged the implementation of stationary bicycles across Canada and the United States. Positive testimonials suggest that their use by students has positive outcomes, but there is limited empirical evidence supporting the efficacy of this pedagogical practice. The current study analyzes teachers‟ perceptions of the use and impact of stationary exercise bicycles in classrooms as part of a community running program initiative through a nationwide survey of 107 participants. Key findings identify teacher perceptions of positive outcomes in students‟ social, emotional, and cognitive development, as well as to …

A Joint Quality Improvement And High-Value Care Curriculum In A Limited-Resource Setting, Anne Cioletti, Suzanne Sweidan Feb 2017

A Joint Quality Improvement And High-Value Care Curriculum In A Limited-Resource Setting, Anne Cioletti, Suzanne Sweidan

E-Learning Modules

Introduction: Since the release of the Institute of Medicine’s To Err Is Human, there has been an increased focus on quality improvement (QI). QI training is now a requirement monitored via ACGME’s clinical learning environment review committees. Given the significant cost of health care waste, teaching physicians to incorporate costs and value into medical decision making is crucial. Increasing information is available on methods to teach high-value care (HVC), but there is little information on combining HVC with QI. As these topics are intimately linked in efforts to provide effective, efficient care, a joint curriculum is a feasible solution.

Parental Messages About Substance Use In Early Adolescence: Extending A Model Of Drug-Talk Styles, Jonathan Pettigrew, Michelle Miller-Day, Young Ju Shin, Janice L. Krieger, Michael L. Hecht, John W. Graham

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

This study extends a typology of parent-offspring drug talk styles to early adolescents and investigates associations with adolescent substance use. Data come from a self-report survey associated with a school-based, 7th grade drug prevention curriculum. Mixed-methods were used to collect data across four measurement occasions spanning 30 months. Findings highlight frequencies of various drug-talk styles over time (i.e., situated direct, ongoing direct, situated indirect, ongoing indirect, never talked), messages adolescents hear from parents, and comparisons of alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use by drug talk style. This study advances understanding of parent-adolescent communication about substances and holds practical implications for drug …

The purpose of this paper is to describe the development and initial accomplishments of a training program of young leaders in community mental health research as part of a Latin American initiative known as RedeAmericas. RedeAmericas was one of five regional ‘Hubs’ funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to improve community mental health care and build mental health research capacity in low- and middle-income countries. It included investigators in six Latin American cities – Santiago, Chile; Medellín, Colombia; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Córdoba, Neuquén, and Buenos Aires in Argentina – working together with a team affiliated …

Multi-Year School-Based Implementation And Student Outcomes Of An Evidence-Based Risk Reduction Intervention, Bo Wang, Bonita Stanton, Lynette Deveaux, Sonja Lunn, Glenda Rolle, Richard Adderley, Maxwell Poitier, Veronica Koci, Sharon Marshall, Perry Gomez

FMPHS Faculty Publications

Background

Intervention effects observed in efficacy trials are rarely replicated when the interventions are broadly disseminated, underscoring the need for more information about factors influencing real-life implementation and program impact. Using data from the ongoing national implementation of an evidence-based HIV prevention program [Focus on Youth in The Caribbean (FOYC)] in The Bahamas, this study examines factors influencing teachers’ patterns of implementation, the impact of teachers’ initial implementation of FOYC, and subsequent delivery of the booster sessions on students’ outcomes.

Methods

Data were collected from the 80 government elementary and 34 middle schools between 2011 and 2014, involving 208 grade …

Parental Perceptions Of Water Competence And Drowning Risk For Themselves And Their Children In An Open Water Environment, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran Dr Feb 2017

Parental Perceptions Of Water Competence And Drowning Risk For Themselves And Their Children In An Open Water Environment, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran Dr

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Little is known about people’s perceptions of how much swimming competency is required to provide protection from drowning, especially in open water environments where most drowning incidents occurs. This study reports on parental perceptions (n = 309) of swimming competency of themselves and their children, and parents beliefs on their safety when swimming in open water. Most parents (58%) considered themselves good/very good swimmers, although more than half (55%) considered that they could swim 25 m or less. Most parents (87%) reported that their children could swim, with more than one half (52%) believing that their child’s swimming competency …

Understanding Contributing Factors To Child Drownings In Public Pools In Australia: A Review Of National Coronial Records, Lauren A. Petrass Dr, Jennifer Blitvich

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study examined the incidence and circumstances associated with child drowning in public pools in Australia; and identified the frequency and nature of coroners’ recommendations. Retrospective case-series analysis of child (aged 0-10 years) unintentional drowning deaths in public pools were conducted based on Coronial data. A total of 12 child drownings were identified. A lack of supervision was recognized as the key contributing factor in 92% of cases, with the caregiver responsible for multiple children (83%); older children supervising younger children (17%); and a busy pool environment (25%) consistently linked with in-adequate supervision. To address drownings in public pools it …
