Relationship Between Muscular Performance Changes And Increases In Body Mass During Overfeeding Plus Resistance Training, Christian Rodriguez, Robert W. Smith, Matthew T. Stratton, Patrick S. Harty, Baylor A. Johnson, Jacob R. Dellinger, Marqui L. Benavides, Bradley Vincent, Abegale D. Williams, Sarah J. White, Grant M. Tinsley
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Two critical components of muscular performance are muscular strength (e.g., the maximal load that can be lifted for a given exercise) and muscular endurance (e.g., the maximal number of repetitions that can be performed at a given load). When seeking improvements in muscular performance, it is common to employ nutritional strategies that create an energy surplus and a resultant gain in body mass. Varying rates of body mass gain are often prescribed to optimize training adaptations, including improvements in muscular performance; however, the relationship between rate of body mass gain and muscular performance improvements, if any, is not entirely clear. …

The Effect Of Acute Consumption Of Overtime Essential Amino Acids Sports Drink On Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness In The Older Sedentary Population, Andi Johnson, Grant Wagner, Abraham Gomez, Jerene Yazzie, Klaudia Szych, Matthew A. Barlow Phd
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Essential amino acids are necessary for nutrition whether obtained by digestion of proteins or by oral supplementation of amino acids. The elderly experience loss of skeletal muscles and decrease in their strength and function, which can lead to poor quality of life. Increased quantity and quality of proteins stimulates muscle protein synthesis that can help combat this natural aging process. Purpose: The aim of this study was to see if consumption of essential amino acid drink high concentrations of leucin (2040 mg/serving) during exercise will attenuate the condition of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness in the elderly. Also, we aimed to …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
A common goal among athletes is to gain additional body mass (BM), particularly fat-free mass (FFM), in order to improve muscle strength, power, and overall performance. Athletes typically undergo BM accretion over a specific period of time in conjunction with high-volume resistance training (RT) in order to preferentially gain FFM and promote concomitant muscular performance improvements. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the rate of BM gain and the proportion of BM gained as FFM versus fat mass (FM) during a 6-week period of overfeeding and resistance training. METHODS: 21 resistance-trained males …
The Effect Of Short-Term Adventure-Sport Curriculum On The Level Of Mental Toughness Of Undergraduate Students, Katie Moscati, Jordan Boyea, Andreas Stamatis, Steven Maynard
The Effect Of Short-Term Adventure-Sport Curriculum On The Level Of Mental Toughness Of Undergraduate Students, Katie Moscati, Jordan Boyea, Andreas Stamatis, Steven Maynard
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Mental toughness (MT) has been associated with both higher academic and physical performance. Adventure sports studies involve exposure to exploratory and risk-taking activities aiming to facilitate positive psychological characteristics. Although such programs are frequently promoted for this purpose, there is lack of empirical evidence concerning the effects of such a curriculum on the levels of MT in undergraduate students. PURPOSE: To examine the efficacy of an adventure-sport curriculum on the levels of MT of freshmen, undergraduate students throughout their first semester in the program. Hypothesis: The MT levels of the participants increase at the end of the semester. METHODS: In …

The Effects Of A Dynamic Warm-Up On Exercise-Induced Redistribution Of Monocytes And Natural Killer Cells, Mahmoud T. Elzayat, Emily C. Lavoy
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Proportions of leukocyte subsets in peripheral blood are altered post-exercise and return to baseline during recovery. This is caused in part by exercise-induced increases in stress hormones. Inclusion of a pre-exercise dynamic warm-up has been shown to decrease markers of cardiovascular stress during exercise. However, whether a warm-up can attenuate changes to the immune system with exercise has not yet been examined PURPOSE: To compare monocyte and natural killer (NK) cell mobilization following a bout of high intensity aerobic exercise with and without a dynamic pre-exercise warm-up. METHODS: 16 physically active adults (7 women, 27.8±4.4 years) cycled 30 …

Influence Of Acute Water Ingestion On Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Estimates Of Body Composition, Jacob R. Dellinger, Baylor A. Johnson, Matthew T. Stratton, Patrick S. Harty, Marqui Benavides, Sarah White, Abegale D. Williams, Robert W. Smith, Grant M. Tinsley
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Body composition estimation is a significant component of health and fitness assessments. Multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MFBIA) uses multiple electrical frequencies that travel through body tissues in order to estimate fluid content and body composition. Prior to body composition assessments, it is common to implement a wet fast (i.e., a fasting period that allows water intake); however, the influence of a wet fast as compared to a dry fast (i.e., disallowing water intake) is relatively unknown. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of acute water consumption on MFBIA body composition estimates. METHODS: A randomized crossover study was conducted in …

Arranged Marriages: An Inappropriate Fabrication, Karika Sethi, Michael D. Reiter
Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal
This paper explores what an inappropriate relationship is and the taxonomy scale used to evaluate different relationships, specifically, arranged marriages. Arranged marriage is a topic that is considered taboo depending on global location. It is more prevalent in Eastern nations such as India, China, Oriental countries, and the Middle East. However, Western influence plays a significant role on what is and is not acceptable, as societal norms differ from place to place. What is defined as normal by culture is what helps to define if a relationship is or is not viewed as inappropriate. This paper is designed to explore …

Integrating Interactive, Adaptive Technology To Teach First Year Physician Assistant Students, Zilola Khashimova
Physician Assistant Studies | Faculty Conference Presentations
Idea: Integrate adaptive technology into Anatomy curriculum. Need: Physician assistant departments do not have the extensive resources and instruction time to teach anatomy like medical schools. With faster computers and large data storage on the cloud, interactive technology has become quite useful and affordable. Interactive technology is algorithm-based systems that take advantage of advanced mathematical formulas and machine learning concepts to adapt specifically to individual learners. At its core, such systems are intended to identify what a student does and doesn’t understand, identify and provide content that will help the student learn it, assess again, help again, etc., until some …

Adolescent Asthma And School Disparities: An Ecological Perspective Of Students And Stakeholders, Tali Schneider
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Asthma is a chronic condition that mainly affects adolescents. Recent reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate a gradual increase in rates of lifetime asthma among adolescents from 17.1% in 2005 to 22.8% in 2015. Currently, one in ten adolescents nation-wide experience active asthma; similar trends are seen in the state of Florida (Florida Asthma Program, 2013; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Prevention, 2015). As a chronic, lifelong condition, asthma can be life-threatening if not properly controlled. When exacerbated, attacks of asthma constrict airways, leading to restrained breathing, wheezing, coughing and chest pain (Parulekar, Alobaidy, …

The study sought to attain two objectives: first, it aimed to discover the effects of learning Latin and Spanish as L2s with respect to the vocabulary acquisition of NES undergraduates; second, it aimed to detect the effects these L2s in terms of metalinguistic awareness. In both cases, the focus was …
What Is "Safe Sex"? Understanding The Need For Sex Education Reform, Julianne Baker
What Is "Safe Sex"? Understanding The Need For Sex Education Reform, Julianne Baker
Gettysburg Social Sciences Review
Currently, the United States has no standardized requirement for sex education. This has precipitated a large gap in knowledge about safe sex and a lack of consensus in current social and educational policy. Debates about abstinence-only and comprehensive sex education have reached a standstill. In an effort to advance the discussion, this paper reveals that the neuroscience behind adolescent sexual risk taking provides underutilized evidence for comprehensive sex education programs. Research shows that adolescents have biological differences in their brain structure that result in a decision-making process different from that of adults, one that can preference rash decisions and potentially …
