Patient Experience Journal

Medical students currently learn about patient-centered care and practice communication skills via a variety of curricula. However, there is little in the published literature describing a standardized approach for training future physicians how health systems approach and work to improve patient experience. The [Anonymous1 and Anonymous2] Schools of Medicine designed a plan to pilot a two-week elective for medical students in their clinical years. The curriculum is designed to help students understand and appreciate the key elements of the patient experience across the continuum of care and prepare students to impact the patient experience either as a practicing physician and/or …

The Little Things: Exploring Perceptions And Experiences Of Client And Family-Centred Care Through Photovoice, Sonia Nizzer, Stacey Ryan, Sandra M. Mckay

Patient Experience Journal

Healthcare in Canada is undergoing a paradigm shift, moving away from a prescriptive approach to care delivery to one that prioritizes clients and their families at the center of their care. In the homecare sector, this approach is commonly referred to as client- and family-centred care (CFCC), a philosophy emphasizing the need for point-of-care providers to partner with those receiving care and their families in a way that is respectful and attuned to their individual needs and goals. This philosophy helps homecare agencies like VHA Home HealthCare deliver care to families that embraces what is most important to them. At …

Wai Puna: An Indigenous Model Of Māori Water Safety And Health In Aotearoa, New Zealand, Chanel Phillips Ph.D.

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Māori (the indigenous peoples of Aotearoa, New Zealand) are intimately connected to wai (i.e., water) yet are overrepresented in New Zealand’s drowning statistics each year. On average Māori account for 20-24% of all preventable and non-preventable drowning fatalities, despite comprising only 15 percent of New Zealand’s population. Drowning remains a significant issue posing a threat to whānau (i.e., families) through premature death being imminent and whakapapa (i.e., genealogy) being interrupted. There is limited research that has examined Māori and indigenous understandings of water safety within the literature and limited studies that have investigated the issue of Māori drowning from a …

Occupational Therapy's Role In Matching Handlers And Assistance Dogs With Occupational Needs, Jyoti K. Tatla

Student Capstone Papers

In the past two decades, there has been an increase in the use of assistance dogs to improve health, function, and companionship (Walther et al., 2017). Although assistance dogs offer a variety of benefits for individuals with different needs, matching a person with a suitable dog is not always successful the first time. Optimal matches can be achieved by adding occupational therapy to strengthen the evaluation process.

The two major purposes of this project were: 1) to observe and assess the current matching process of assistance dog programs and 2) identifying occupational therapy’s role in aiding the evaluation process. This …

Gauging Interest In An Elective Course To Further Careers In Healthcare Academia, Karielle Shaffery Apr 2020

Gauging Interest In An Elective Course To Further Careers In Healthcare Academia, Karielle Shaffery

ONU Student Research Colloquium

There has been continuous growth in the number of pharmacy schools, which has led to an expanded need for pharmacy faculty members. Although there is a recognized and unmet need for such faculty, the topic of pharmacy academia is sparsely addressed in pharmacy programs. Integrating students in an elective teaching course during their didactic education, prior to determination of their career path, could inspire more students to take on the role of an educator. Ideally, allowing students to have first-hand experience in academia focused activities and exposing them to the responsibilities of an academician could peak interest in this area. …
