Prior Education And Medical School Achievement: An Analysis Of Elective Courses Impact In A Flipped Classroom, Malavika Pia Sengupta, Amber Todd

Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Medical school curricula change rapidly, moving from a purely lecture-based format in the early 20th century to today’s organ system-based courses, problem-based learning, and clinical correlations earlier in the medical school experience. The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) describes the minimum required courses for medical school to be 1 year each of biology, physics, English, and 2 years of chemistry. Many core classes in medical school are not addressed these required courses. This study examines whether taking foundational yet non-required courses, such as (1) anatomy, (2) immunology/microbiology, and (3) biochemistry prior to matriculation to medical school increases the likelihood …

A Participatory Action Research Study Of Police Interviewing Following Crisis Intervention Team Training, Maria Felix-Ortiz, Catherine Steele, Marisa Deguzman, Georgen Guerrero, Melissa Graham

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

Estimates vary, but a third to one half of individuals shot and killed by police have a mental illness or disability, and many who are taken into custody languish in county jails where no treatment for their illness is available. The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model is an increasingly important adjunct to U.S. police training because it de-escalates tense situations, diverts people with mental illness away from jail and into treatment, and can reduce the risk of civilian deaths during a police encounter. As such, it is a strategy for reducing the social injustice of incarceration or deaths of people …

Lessons learned from the history of an organization are valuable. This is especially true for an organization with the legacy held by the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of the Incarnate Word. Memories recounted by nursing faculty were collected to enhance information provided in the two-volume chronicle written by Sister Patrice Slattery in 1995 entitled, “Promises to Keep” and the last history of the school, “The Story of One School of Nursing” written by Sister Charles Marie Frank in 1976.

It used modified Borg and Gall development procedures, while its data were obtained through valid and reliable experts assessment questionnaire and impartial character scale. The numerical data analysis results from guidance and counseling experts, as well as educational media development experts, signify that this …

Protocol For Conducting Procedural Skills Training With Simulators: A Critical Proposal, Gleyvis Coro-Montanet, Julia Sánchez-Ituarte, Ana De La Hoz-Calvo, María Jesús Pardo-Monedero

Higher Learning Research Communications

Task trainer simulators are often used in medical programs for bachelor’s degree students when teaching procedural skills. They provide the opportunity to practice dangerous maneuvers that students are not ready to perform on real patients yet. The rise of technology has vastly expanded the availability of these devices for use in teaching. To develop a protocol that would account for the complexities of psychomotor learning, based on student progress, and improve training quality, we designed a protocol for the bachelor’s degree program in dentistry. We justify the key elements of the proposal and explain the full working protocol.

Doctoral Capstone Experience In Program And Policy Development- Selah Freedom, Ashley N. Jones

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

Child trafficking has been reported in all 50 states and affects more than 2 million children each year (Guardian Group, 2021). Involvement in human trafficking at a young age induces trauma that has a lasting effect on the victim’s personality and coping skills. A review of literature confirmed a need for more support of the use of occupational therapy with sex trafficking survivors. Despite support for the implementation of occupational therapy in similar trauma populations like domestic violence, homelessness, post-traumatic stress disorder, and disaster survivors, there is limited literature supporting the use of OT with human trafficking survivors (Gorman & …
