The Effects Of Yoga On College Students' Mental Health: A Systematic Review, Jiang Yumei, Pu Yingya, Shen Bo, Ding Chen

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

The mental health of college students is an increasingly serious public health problem. Effective and healthy interventions are needed. More and more research has been conducted on yoga, but there are few randomized controlled trials (RTC) on effects of yoga intervention on students' mental health. Therefore, this study examined effects of quality of yoga intervention on mental health in college students. We used PubMed (Medline), Cochrane, Web of Science, CNKI, VIP Chinese Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP) and WanFang Database to search randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of yoga intervention in college students' mental health. After the screening, 17 articles …

Body Composition And Psychophysical Well-Being Of Women Practicing Yoga, Aneta Omelan, Justyna Wiśniewska, Robert Podstawski

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Introduction: This study characterized yoga as a form of free-time physical activity by analyzing and evaluating the body composition of women who regularly practice yoga, and by describing the effect of yoga on their psychophysical health. Material and Methods: The study involved 94 women: 56 yoga practitioners and 38 Zumba participants. The subjects were surveyed with a questionnaire to elicit information about their socioeconomic status. Body composition was determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Differences were assessed with two-tailed chi-square tests and Student’s t-tests. Results: The vast majority of the participants (89%) felt a positive influence of yoga on their mental …

An Evaluation Of Static And Dynamic Yoga Training Programs, Garett Petty, Tomas Chapman-Lopez, Jose M. Moris, Claire Timon, Yunsuk Koh Feb 2022

An Evaluation Of Static And Dynamic Yoga Training Programs, Garett Petty, Tomas Chapman-Lopez, Jose M. Moris, Claire Timon, Yunsuk Koh

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

While traditional yoga programs focus on static stretching and core stability, Essentrics yoga relies more heavily on full-body stretch and strengthening regiments coupled with dynamic movements such as ceiling reaches, side-to-side bends, lunges, and side leg lifts. Through the incorporation of more dynamic movements, Essentrics yoga is thought to elicit greater improvements in overall body composition, flexibility, and balance. PURPOSE: To examine the benefits of a 6-weeks long Essentrics (dynamic) program compared to standard (static) Yoga on body composition, flexibility, and balance. METHODS: Thirty-one participants (24 females and 7 males, age = 20.4 ± 0.2yrs, and BMI = 22.58 ± …

Effects Of Yoga On A Vibration Platform With Or Without Blood Flow Restriction, Fnu Mahjabin, Bianca Cepeda, Cecilio Gutierrez, Jasmine Aviles, Karina Torres, Valquiria Caboclo, Ulku Karabulut, Murat Karabulut Feb 2020

Effects Of Yoga On A Vibration Platform With Or Without Blood Flow Restriction, Fnu Mahjabin, Bianca Cepeda, Cecilio Gutierrez, Jasmine Aviles, Karina Torres, Valquiria Caboclo, Ulku Karabulut, Murat Karabulut

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The combination of Yoga with novel modalities like vibration platform and blood flow restriction might exert enhanced physiological responses. PURPOSE: To investigate acute effects of yoga performed on a vibration platform (VP) with and without blood flow restriction (BFR) on hemodynamics, flexibility, and lower extremity explosive power. METHODS: Total 17 healthy subjects, 8 males (age= 22 ± 4.2 years) and 9 females (age= 24.2 ± 2.9 years), were screened by questionnaires, read and signed informed consent, and participated in the study. Subjects completed 4 separate randomized yoga sessions (on the floor, on the floor with BFR (FL+BFR), on …

Hemodynamic And Pressor Responses To Combination Of Yoga And Blood Flow Restriction, Savannah V. Wooten, Sten Stray-Gundersen, Hirofumi Tanaka Feb 2019

Hemodynamic And Pressor Responses To Combination Of Yoga And Blood Flow Restriction, Savannah V. Wooten, Sten Stray-Gundersen, Hirofumi Tanaka

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Blood flow restriction (BFR) training has been increasingly incorporated into a more common activity of daily exercise (e.g., yoga). However, BFR may increase blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand by augmenting vascular resistance. Yoga is characterized by systemic isometric exercises and accompanied by marked pressor responses. This raises the concern of exaggerated cardiovascular responses when yoga is performed with BFR. Purpose: To determine the impact of a combination of yoga and BFR on cardiovascular responses. Methods: Twenty young healthy participants (M =10, F=10) performed 20 yoga poses with and without BFR bands placed on both legs. Beat by beat blood …

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

Yoga is a mind, body, and spiritual practice that originated nearly 5,000 years in India. It is known to relieve stress, enhance athletic performance, increase strength and flexibility as well as assist in achieving inner peace, focus, and improving mental wellness. In recent years, the practice of yoga has grown exponentially in the United States with about 37 million practitioners in 2016. However, the future growth of yoga in the U.S faces some critical challenges. American innovations in yoga techniques and the rise of the yoga accessories industry with deep linkages with consumerism, is drawing the practice away from its …

Acute Effects Of Yoga On A Vibration Platform On Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, Flexibility, And Vertical Jump, Ricardo Parra, Elijah Lopez, Jason Mendoza, Joshua Fronk, Arnold Jimenez, Ashley Rivas, Murat Karabulut

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Both yoga and whole-body vibration exercise may have a wide-range of positive effects independent of each other. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of yoga performed on and off a vibration platform on blood pressure, flexibility, and vertical jump. METHODS: Subjects (n = 14; 9 females, 5 males; mean age = 22.5 ±1.9) completed 3randomized protocols of yoga on and off a vibration platform. The testing protocols were: 1) yoga poses on vibration platform with low frequency and low amplitude (PPL), 2) yoga poses on platform with high frequency and high amplitude …

3-Dimensional Biomechanical Comparison Of Spinal Posture In Yoga Practitioners And Non-Practitioners During A Seated And Standing Position, Savannah V. Wooten

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Yoga has been claimed to be beneficial for helping a series of clinical populations and improving ailments such as, but not limited to, stress, chronic back pain, muscle endurance, flexibility, balance, and posture. Whereas many of the above listed assertions have been scientifically investigated, there is a lack of objective evidence that supports the claim that yoga improves posture. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to compare a 3-D biomechanical analysis of spinal posture among yoga practitioners (YP) and Non yoga practitioners (NP) during seated and standing positions. METHODS: 10 yoga practitioners (M= 3, F=7) and 10 …
